Prayer Tips

Luke’s version of the Prayer of Jesus
Luke 11:1 and it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Have faith in prayer.
Continue praying until you receive an answer.
God will answer your prayer.
God will confirm receipt of prayer via the Holy Spirit. Jesus teaches endurance in prayer.

Bybel Vers en Gebed vir Vandag

Nou is die Here daardie Gees, en waar die Gees van die Here is, daar is vryheid.
2 Korintiërs 3:17

Gebed

Gebed Wenke

5 En hy sê vir hulle: Wie van julle sal ‘n vriend hê, en sal middernag na hom toe gaan en vir hom sê: Vriend, leen my drie brode;
12 Of as hy ‘n eier vra, sal hy vir hom ‘n skerpioen aanbied?
Hou geloof in gebed.
Hou aan bid totdat jy ‘n antwoord ontvang.
God sal jou gebed verhoor.
Jesus leer volharding in gebed.

Bible Teaching of the Day

Concentrate on the Cross – Part 13

There is both an earthly reason and a heavenly reason Jesus was crucified. Simply put, the earthly reason is that mankind is evil. The heavenly reason is that God is good.

The earthly reason Jesus was crucified: mankind is evil. Wicked men conspired against Him, falsely accused Him, and murdered Him. The leaders of Israel had several reasons they wanted Jesus to be executed. They were envious of His following (Matthew 27:18). They were afraid that Jesus would gather too large a following, which might bring the Roman authorities down on the nation, causing them to lose their positions (John 11:48). They hated the fact that Jesus called out their sin publicly (Matthew 23). And they thought He was blaspheming when He claimed to be the Son of God (Luke 22:66–71). But all these reasons were simply symptoms of their underlying unbelief (John 5:46).

Jesus was crucified, rather than stoned, hanged, drowned, etc., because His execution was carried out by the Romans. Crucifixion was the method of execution employed by the Roman Empire to make an example of someone and to deter others from committing the same offense. It was normal to post the charges against the condemned on the cross. Pilate posted the charge “King of the Jews” on Jesus’ cross (Matthew 27:37). The Jewish leaders had made this accusation to goad the Roman governor into executing Jesus. John 19:12 reports, “From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, ‘If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.’” Pilate could not afford to be seen as tolerating a rival to Caesar.

The heavenly reason Jesus was crucified: God is good. God had a plan to save sinners, and Jesus was the Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29). Even though the act of crucifying Jesus was evil, the crucifixion was still the plan of God to make atonement for sin. “Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen” (Acts 4:27–28).

The crucifixion was not a case of evil getting out of control. Jesus told Pilate, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above” (John 19:11). The powers of darkness were given divine permission to act (Luke 22:53). God allowed the hatred, the conspiracy, the false accusations, the sham trials, and the murder of His Son. In the crucifixion of Christ, God used the evil desires of evil men to accomplish the greatest good: the provision of salvation for mankind. “It was the LORD’s will to crush Him and to cause Him to suffer” (Isaiah 53:10); the result was glorious: “He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” (verse 12).

There is nothing in Old Testament prophecy that explicitly mandates that the Messiah be crucified. At the same time, there are hints of the manner of His death in the Law and the Prophets. In Galatians 3:13, Paul applies Deuteronomy 21:22–23 to the death of Christ. Crucifixion allowed for the “piercing” mentioned in Zechariah 12:10 (cf. John 19:37). Crucifixion results in the shedding of blood, necessary for a sacrifice (Hebrews 9:22; cf. Leviticus 17:11). In crucifixion, the breaking of bones can be avoided (Exodus 12:46; cf. John 19:36). And the crucifixion of Christ perfectly fits the description of the anguish David faced in Psalm 22.

We all have committed sins, and we are all worthy of death, but Christ took our place. He was publicly executed, and His blood was shed on our behalf, as Paul explains in Romans 3:25–26: “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”

In the final analysis, the reason that Jesus was crucified is the answer that each of us must come to understand and embrace by faith: Jesus was crucified to pay for my sin so that I can be forgiven and be made right with God.

“Full potential in Jesus”

When did you reach your full potential? Unfortunately, many believe that they have reached their full potential when they have achieved some level of success or when they have achieved their goals. However, this is not so. To illustrate; a group of robbers can successfully rob a bank. Similarly, a hijacker can be considered successful if he hijacked your car. Would you say that they have reached their full potential? Think about this: A person starts out as a laborer at a company and works his way up until he is a shareholder or manager. Does this mean that he has reached his full potential? Often people reach the top of the ladder, only to find that the ladder was placed against the wrong wall. So, how do we reach our full potential?

Full potential is only reached when the fullness of God is revealed in every area of your life, when the fullness of Christ and especially His sacrifice on the cross is visible in everything you do and when every action and every step you take is inspired by the Holy Spirit in you. In other words; Full potential is only achieved when God is glorified in us.

So how do we reach our full potential? In short: When we die we are enabled to reach our full potential. We must die or lay down the old, fleshly and worldly nature. This is done when we accept Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. We must also be able to say: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

Then, after repentance and regeneration, we must heed Paul’s counsel as recorded in Romans 12:1-2 which states: “I now want to make a very serious appeal to you. I do this because you understand how much God cares for you. Give your whole life to Him. You must be living sacrifices in God’s hand. A life that is fully dedicated to Him is exactly what religion is about. Do not become at home in this world with all its evil. No, let God renew you from the inside. Let Him change your way of thinking so that you can know what He expects of you. Then you will also know what His will is and how to surrender your whole life to Him every day.” (taken from the Message translation)

Full potential is achieved when we listen to the Holy Spirit who confirms the Word of God in us, when we hear His voice, do what He says, go where He commands us and obey the Word of God. By the way, I believe that the Spirit of God says that we will never reach our full potential if we continue to live in sin. Despite knowing the truth as revealed in Scripture, many will not reach their full potential if they do not turn from sin. For example: An adulterer will never reach their full potential. A person who lives in sexual immorality will not reach their full potential. A disobedient or uncontrollable child will not reach their full potential. Why is this so? Because God is not glorified by sin.

To reach our full potential, we must also confess and declare God’s Word in our lives. Here are some examples of faith declarations:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ( Philippians 4:13 )
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
“When I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:10)
“Without Jesus I can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

To reach our full potential in Christ, we must reach out to others, to those who are hungry and thirsty, to those who long for the Bread or Water of life. After all, Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

Finally, let me share with you a text from the message translation: “When I was with you, you always did what I asked. How much more now that I am no longer with you. Remember, God is watching you. Therefore, do everything you can to live as people who belong to God. God himself is involved in your life. He is busy with you when you do not feel like doing something that will please Him, and when you finally do. He is still with you. Yes, it is He who is working in you like this. Do everything without complaining or arguing. Then no one will be able to accuse you of being deceitful or of wrong motives. No one will be able to complain about you as children of God – even if you live among people who are corrupt and without conscience” (Philippians 2: 12b-15 )

Vandag se Bemoediging

“Volle potensiaal in Jesus”

Dink hieroor: ‘n Persoon begin as ‘n arbeider by ‘n maatskappy werk en werk sy pad oop totdat hy ‘n aandeelhouer of bestuurder is. So, hoe bereik ons volle potensiaal?

Hoekom is dit so?

(Romeine 8:37 )
“Wanneer ek swak is, dan is ek sterk . ” ( 2 Korinthiërs 12:10 )
“Sonder Jesus kan ek niks doen nie. ” (Johannes 15: 5 )

(Markus 16:15)

God self is by julle lewe betrokke. Hy is met julle besig as julle nie voel julle wil iets doen wat Hom gelukkig sal maak, en as julle dit uiteindelik doen. Is Hy steeds by julle.

Bible Prophecy in the News

8 Signs That The Bombing Of Iran Could Be Coming Very Soon

If bombs start falling on Iran’s nuclear facilities, it would instantly be the biggest news story of 2025 so far. Iranian air defenses would need to be neutralized first, and that would be quite an extensive operation all by itself. Subsequently, destroying Iran’s nuclear facilities would be extraordinarily difficult, because many of them are very deep underground.

We have heard a lot about our “bunker buster” bombs, but there is a lot of debate about whether those bombs can actually destroy facilities that are buried that deep. Of course the moment the Iranians start getting bombed, they will strike back by hitting Israeli cities and U.S. bases all over the Middle East.

At that point we would be at war with the Iranians, and there would be no turning back. The following are 8 signs that the bombing of Iran could be coming very soon…

New satellite imagery shows the USS Carl Vinson entering the Indian Ocean via the Malacca Straits, marking a significant step in the U.S. military’s increased presence in the region.

This move comes as tensions with Iran and the Houthis in Yemen escalate, signaling the potential for a more aggressive U.S. stance in the coming days and weeks.

It is being reported that 6 B-2 bombers have been deployed to the base on Diego Garcia. This represents 30 percent of our entire fleet of B-2 bombers…

In the largest single deployment of stealth bombers in U.S. history, the Pentagon has sent six B-2 “Spirit” aircraft to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

The long-range bombers, which are uniquely suited to evade Iranian air defenses and can carry America’s most potent bunker busting weapons, flew in from Missouri last week in a little noticed operation.

The B-2 bombers that have been deployed to Diego Garcia are being left out in the open so that the Iranians can see them…

“All the bombers, they’re not in hangers, they’re underneath satellites where they can be photographed and seen; and the idea is, do you see our sword?” retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Blaine Holt, who served as Deputy U.S. Military Representative to NATO, said in an interview with Newsmax last week. Holt also said that the B-2 deployment “gives the president a military option that he can actually use these weapons against Iran if needed.”

Negotiations with Iran are scheduled to begin this weekend. The New York Times is reporting that the Iranians are expected to reject President Trump’s demands…

But Mr. Trump’s public demands — that Iran stop nuclear enrichment, hand over its large supply of enriched uranium and destroy its existing nuclear facilities — will almost surely be rejected by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, as an unacceptable humiliation and surrender. How far both sides are willing to compromise is unclear, but Mr. Trump is well known for making ultimate demands at the start and then searching for a deal.

President Trump is warning that if negotiations with the Iranians do not succeed “it will be a very bad day for Iran”…

Speaking from the White House’ Oval Office last night Trump warned Iran “would be in great danger” if the projected talks were stymied. He said: “We’re having direct talks with Iran, and they’ve started. It’ll go on Saturday.

“We have a very big meeting, and we’ll see what can happen. And I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable.

“Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if the talks aren’t successful, I actually think it will be a very bad day for Iran”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is openly telling us that a military strike on Iran has almost become “inevitable”…

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that if US ‘indirect’ talks with Iran over its nuclear program fail, then a military attack becomes ‘inevitable’. He issued the warning fresh off his Monday Oval Office visit with President Trump, wherein the US leader announced for the first time that Saturday talks with the Iranians will be hosted in Oman.

Netanyahu said in the new video statement, “”We agree that Iran will not have nuclear weapons. This can be done in an agreement, but only if… they go in, blow up (Iran’s) facilities, dismantle all the equipment, under American supervision.” And he added: “If talks drag on, then the military option becomes inevitable.”

Now that Trump is in the White House, the Israelis believe that now is “the optimum moment to deal with Iran”…

An Israeli diplomatic source warned it is crucial a deal be thrashed out with Iran to temper its nuclear programme.

They said: “From Israel’s perspective, with Trump in the White House, this represents the optimum moment to deal with Iran. There won’t be a better chance.

“Obtaining precise intelligence on just how far Iran’s nuclear programme has advanced has always been hard to obtain.

It is just an unverified rumor at this stage, but an Iraqi journalist named Bassim Alhazradji is alleging that the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel have decided to begin a bombing campaign within the next seven days…

Iraqi journalist Bassim Alhazradji has made a startling claim that the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel have reached a final agreement to launch a coordinated military strike against Iran. According to Alhazradji, the attack is expected to begin within the next seven days. While the journalist did not reveal the sources of his information, the statement has caused a ripple of speculation across regional media and political circles.

Alhazradji’s report has not been independently verified, and no official government has issued a statement confirming such a plan. However, rising tensions between Iran and the West, particularly following Tehran’s increasingly confrontational rhetoric and alleged nuclear advancements, lend a measure of plausibility to the claims. Analysts have also pointed to recent military drills conducted by the US Navy in the Persian Gulf, as well as reports of Israeli air force activity near Iranian airspace, as possible signs of an impending escalation.

Personally, I do not think that the bombing of Iran will start within the next seven days.

But if negotiations fail, it is coming soon.

Dr. Oz Hassan has told a British news source that any significant effort to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities would essentially be “the start of a major war”…

“A serious attempt to destroy Iran’s capabilities would require a large, complex military operation, involving stealth bombers, powerful bunker-busting bombs, and attacks on Iran’s air defences and military systems. This would look less like a quick raid and more like the start of a major war.”

And such an operation would also likely kill any chance of peace with the Russians.

In fact, a Russian spokesperson has said that any attempt to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities would “inevitably lead to an irreversible global catastrophe”…

Maria Zakharova, from Russia’s foreign ministry, said: “The use of military force by Iran’s opponents in the context of the settlement is illegal and unacceptable.

“Threats from outside to bomb Iran’s nuclear infrastructure facilities will inevitably lead to an irreversible global catastrophe. These threats are simply unacceptable.”

We are so close to the unthinkable.

So let us hope that the Iranians are in a mood to compromise and that the negotiations that are scheduled for this weekend go well.

Because if negotiations with Iran fail, it appears that there will be all-out war in the Middle East.

Signs of the Times in the News

Great Falling Away – Religious Switching – A Wake-Up Call For The Church.

Have you ever heard of “religious switching”? The Pew Research Center describes it as a growing “phenomenon” where individuals shift their religious identities from childhood to adulthood. This doesn’t refer to changes within the same faith, but rather to those who either adopt a new religion or disaffiliate religious practice altogether.

Pew’s latest report highlights a surge in this trend in recent years. Drawing from data on approximately 80,000 individuals across 36 countries, the study revealed that “a fifth or more of all adults have left the religious group in which they were raised,” with Christianity and Buddhism taking the hardest hits.

The countries seeing these “religious switching” trends most commonly are East Asia, Western Europe, North America, and South America. And perhaps the real surprise is that the spotlight really isn’t on religious “switching” so much as a complete abandonment of religion altogether.

“In other words,” Pew wrote, “most of the switching is disaffiliation — people leaving the religion of their childhood and no longer identifying with any religion.” It turns out that “many of these people were raised as Christians,” with “29% of adults in Sweden alone that say they were raised Christian but now describe themselves religiously as atheists, agnostics or ‘nothing in particular.'” Pew further emphasized, “In most of the countries surveyed, Christianity has the highest ratios of people leaving to people joining — the largest net losses.”

According to David Closson, director of Family Research Council’s Center for Biblical Worldview, “This is a major study.” On Friday’s “Washington Watch,” he explained that it’s no small matter to survey as many people as Pew did in as many countries as they did, “and it shows that Christians in those 36 countries are one of the top religions that lose the next generation.” As Christians, he explained, “we should be aware of this trend, and this should cause us … to redouble our efforts of discipleship.”

Closson elaborated with The Washington Stand: “The Pew study is significant for a number of reasons,” he said. “First, it shows that, worldwide, churches and Christian parents are having a difficult time retaining their children when it comes to passing down the faith.”

But this study also reflects what FRC’s research has found in a 2021 survey, which “showed only 6% of Americans have what you could call a biblical worldview.” Naturally, Closson added, this raises the question: “What do the other 94% of Americans believe when it comes to their worldview?”

The answer, Closson explained, is syncretism — a worldview that blends “various beliefs and convictions, even if those beliefs are internally contradictory.” About 88% of Americans subscribe to this mindset, which he said “helps explain why the vast majority of young adults in this country, even those who grew up in the church, have not retained a consistent biblical worldview.”

This raises another pressing question, he noted: Have Christians, “parents, and church leaders even attempted to pass down a consistent Christian worldview?” Closson found the results unsurprising, especially given FRC’s corroborative research since launching its Center for Biblical Worldview in May 2021. Still, he stressed that it underscores the urgent need for Christians to reassess their approach to evangelism and discipleship.

As Christians, we understand that when it comes to sharing the Good News and planting seeds, God is ultimately in control of the increase. And yet, if you flip through the pages of Scripture, you’ll see a command repeated time and again: “Go.” What you won’t see in Scripture is a command to be complacent or stagnant.

We’re called to proclaim the gospel, to make disciples of all nations, tongues, and tribes. We’re urged to be “doers” of the Word, not just hearers, letting its truth shape our hearts and lives. A survey showing Christianity with the highest rates of disaffiliation among religions shouldn’t weigh us down with despair. Instead, it should act as 1) a wake-up call and 2) a reminder.

It’s a wake-up call to the fact that our call is not to “go share the gospel as long as people are responding well to it.” No, our call is, come rain or come shine, to share the gospel. Period. We share it despite opposition, hostility, and persecution, because we know it is the only truth that saves. No one is beyond redemption; no one lacks the need for it. Recognizing this, we press forward.

Thus, studies like Pew’s serve as a reminder that, even when the outlook seems bleak or efforts feel futile, we serve a sovereign God. Jesus declared in Matthew 16:18, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” We don’t bow to surveys signaling Christianity’s decline or warnings that it’s “going out of style.” We heed God’s promise that nothing can derail His plan, OR IS it the GREAT FALLING AWAY APOSTLE PAUL WARNED ABOUT

Gog and Magog Update

Trump lauds ‘very smart’ Erdogan for ‘taking over’ Syria, says he’ll fix Israel’s ‘problem’ with Turkey

Trump lauds ‘very smart’ Erdogan for ‘taking over’ Syria, says he’ll fix Israel’s ‘problem’ with Turkey

Assuaging Israeli concerns over Turkish influence in Syria, Trump says he can mediate between Jerusalem and Ankara.

US President Donald Trump addressed Israeli concerns over Turkey’s presence in Syria, saying that he would be able to “work something out” between Israel and Turkey, should both sides make “reasonable demands.”

Speaking at a press conference shortly after meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday at the White House, Trump stressed his strong relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Referring to Erdogan as “very smart,” Trump said he had phoned the Turkish leader after Islamist groups, backed by Ankara, successfully ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad from power in November 2024.

“I said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve done what nobody’s been able to do in 2,000 years. You’ve taken over Syria.’ With different names, but the same thing,” Trump recounted.

“I told [Netanyahu]… ‘Bibi, if you have a problem with Turkey, I really think I’m going to be able to work it out,’” he continued.

“You know, I have a very, very good relationship with Turkey and with their leader, and I think we’ll be able to work it out,” he added.

“As long as you are reasonable. You have to be reasonable.”

Israel has carried out regular bombing campaigns against Iranian assets in Syria for years, and is concerned that a Turkish military buildup in the country could limit the IAF’s activities in the country.

In recent years, Erdogan has spouted increasingly unhinged anti-Israel rhetoric, including calling Netanyahu a “child-killing vampire.”

Erdogan also called for Allah to destroy Israel in a public Ramadan prayer last month.

At the conference, Netanyahu praised Trump’s offer to mediate between Israel and Turkey regarding Syria.

“We’ve had neighborly relations with Turkey that have deteriorated, and we don’t want to see Syria being used by anyone, including Turkey, as a base for attack in Israel,” Netanyahu said.

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summary

Summary of the Book of
Deuteronomy
Author:
Moses wrote the Book of Deuteronomy, which is in fact a collection of his
sermons to Israel just before they crossed the Jordan. “These are the words which Moses
spoke” (1:1). Someone else (Joshua, perhaps) may have written the last chapter. Full
article: Who wrote the book of Deuteronomy? Who was the author of Deuteronomy?
Date of Writing: These sermons were given during the 40-day period prior to Israel’s
entering the Promised Land. The first sermon was delivered on the 1st day of the 11th
month (1:3), and the Israelites crossed the Jordan 70 days later, on the 10th day of the
1st month (Joshua 4:19). Subtract 30 days of mourning after Moses’ death
(Deuteronomy 34:8), and we’re left with 40 days. The year was 1406 B.C.
Purpose of Writing: A new generation of Israelites was about to enter the Promised
Land. This multitude had not experienced the miracle at the Red Sea or heard the law
given at Sinai, and they were about to enter a new land with many dangers and
temptations. The book of Deuteronomy was given to remind them of God’s law and
God’s power.
Key Verses:
“Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the
commands of the LORD your God that I give you.” (Deuteronomy 4:2)
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I
give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about
them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and
when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-7)
“He said to them, ‘Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day,
so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They
are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land
you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” (Deuteronomy 32:46-47)
Brief Summary: The Israelites are commanded to remember four things: God’s
faithfulness, God’s holiness, God’s blessings, and God’s warnings. The first three
chapters recap the trip from Egypt to their current location, Moab. Chapter 4 is a call to
obedience, to be faithful to the God who was faithful to them.
Chapters 5 through 26 are a repetition of the Law. The Ten Commandments, the laws
concerning sacrifices and specials days, and the rest of the laws are given to the new
generation. Blessings are promised to those who obey (5:29; 6:17-19; 11:13-15), and
famine is promised to those who break the Law (11:16-17).
The theme of blessing and cursing is continued in chapters 27-30. This portion of the
book ends with a clear choice set before Israel: “I have set before you life and death,
blessing and cursing.” God’s desire for His people is found in what He recommends:
“choose life” (30:19).
In the final chapters, Moses encourages the people; commissions his replacement,
Joshua; records a song; and gives a final blessing to each of the tribes of Israel. Chapter
34 relates the circumstances of Moses’ death. He climbed Mt. Pisgah, where the Lord
showed him the Promised Land that he could not enter. At 120 years old, but still with
good eyesight and the strength of youth, Moses died in the presence of the Lord. The
book of Deuteronomy ends with a short obituary on this great prophet.
Foreshadowings: Many New Testament themes are present in the Book of
Deuteronomy. The foremost among them is the necessity of keeping perfectly the
Mosaic Law and the impossibility of doing so. The endless sacrifices necessary to atone
for the sins of the people—who continually transgressed the Law—would find their
fulfillment in the final “once for all” sacrifice of Christ (Hebrews 10:10). Because of His
atoning work on the cross, we would need no further sacrifices for sin.
God’s choosing of the Israelites as His special people foreshadows His choosing of those
who would believe in Christ (1 Peter 2:9). In Deuteronomy 18:15-19, Moses prophesies
of another prophet—the ultimate Prophet to come who is the Messiah. Like Moses, He
would receive and preach divine revelation and He would lead His people (John
6:14; 7:40).
Practical Application: The book of Deuteronomy underscores the importance of God’s
Word. It is a vital part of our lives. Although we are no longer under the Old Testament
law, we are still responsible to submit to the will of God in our lives. Simple obedience
brings blessing, and sin has its own consequences.
None of us is “above the law.” Even Moses, the leader and prophet chosen by God, was
required to obey. The reason that he was not allowed to enter the Promised Land was
that he disobeyed the Lord’s clear command (Numbers 20:13).
During the time of His testing in the wilderness, Jesus quoted from the book of
Deuteronomy three times (Matthew 4). In so doing, Jesus illustrated for us the necessity
of hiding God’s Word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11).
As Israel remembered God’s faithfulness, so should we. The crossing of the Red Sea, the
holy presence at Sinai, and the blessing of manna in the desert should be an
encouragement to us as well. A great way to keep going forward is to take some time to
look back and see what God has done.
We also have a beautiful picture in Deuteronomy of a loving God Who desires a
relationship with His children. The Lord names love as the reason that He brought Israel
out of Egypt “with a mighty hand” and redeemed them (Deuteronomy 7:7-9). What a
wonderful thing to be free from the bondage of sin and loved by an all-powerful God!

Inleiding tot die Bybel – Bybel Samevattings

Opsomming van die boek
Deuteronomium
Skrywer:
( Deuteronomium 4:2 )
“Luister, Israel: Die HERE onse God, die HERE is een.
julle gee, moet in julle harte wees. Beïndruk hulle op jou kinders. Praat oor hulle as jy by
die huis sit en as jy langs die pad stap, as jy gaan lê en as jy opstaan.” ( Deuteronomium
6:4-7 )
Hoofstuk 4 is ‘n
doodsberig oor hierdie groot profeet.
Voorafskaduwings: Baie Nuwe-Testamentiese temas is teenwoordig in die boek
Deuteronomium.
God gekies is, moes gehoorsaam wees.
