“The Way” is mentioned several times in the book of Acts (Acts 9:2; 19:9, 23; 22:4; 24:14, 22) in connection with early followers of Christ. It was to take prisoner men and women who “belonged to the Way” (Acts 9:2; 22:4) that Saul of Tarsus went to Damascus. After Saul was converted, he became a missionary and went by the name of Paul. In Ephesus, Paul met some in the synagogue who “became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way” (Acts 19:9). Paul left the synagogue and continued to preach the gospel where it would be heard rather than remain with those who denigrated the Way.
During his trial before Felix, Paul said, “I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect” (Acts 24:14). We are also told that Felix knew about the Way (verse 22). It seems that the Romans considered the Way to be a sect of Judaism rather than a separate religion.
Presumably, the early followers of Christ referred to themselves as followers of the Way because of Jesus’ statement in John 14:6 that He is “the way and the truth and the life.” Luke says that Aquila and Priscilla explained to Apollos “the way of God” more fully (Acts 18:26). Peter refers to Christianity as “the way of truth” (2 Peter 2:2). And the writer of Hebrews says that Jesus’ broken body is the “new and living way” for us to enter the Most Holy Place (Hebrews 10:19–20).
Today there are various Bibles that include The Way in their titles. There is also a book by Josemaria Escriva, founder of the Catholic Opus Dei, titled The Way. Additionally, there is a cult called The Way or The Way International. For more information on this cult, please refer to our article “What is the Way International?”.

Vermoedelik het die vroeë volgelinge van Christus na hulself verwys as volgelinge van die Weg as gevolg van Jesus se stelling in Johannes 14:6 dat Hy “die weg en die waarheid en die lewe” is. Our Future is God’s History !
The Bible is always completely accurate, including its prophetic content. Consider, for instance, the prophecy that Christ would be born in Bethlehem of Judea, as foretold in Micah 5:2. Micah gave his prophecy around 700 B.C. Where was Christ born seven centuries later? In Bethlehem of Judea (Luke 2:1-20; Matthew 2:1-12).
Peter Stoner, in Science Speaks, has shown that coincidence in prophetic Scripture is ruled out by the science of probability. Taking just eight prophecies concerning Christ, Stoner found that the chance that any one man might have fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in 10 to the 17th power. That would be 1 chance in 100,000,000,000,000,000. Of course, Jesus fulfilled many more than eight prophecies! There is no doubt that Bible is totally accurate in foretelling the future.
Since He can foretell the future, God certainly knows the future. Isaiah recorded these words about God: “Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, ‘My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure’” (Isaiah 46:9-10). God is the only One who can stand at the beginning and accurately declare the end.
God is omniscient; He knows everything actual and possible. God is also eternal (Psalm 90:2). As the eternal, omniscient God, He has lived our yesterdays, our todays, and our tomorrows, the past, present, and future. God is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End (Revelation 21:6).
There are still prophecies in the Bible that await fulfillment. Because God knows the future, we can count on all the prophecies to eventually be fulfilled. Events are taking place in God’s calendar according to His plan. We know who holds the future—the one true, personal, eternal, and all-knowing God of the Bible.

Die Bybel is altyd heeltemal akkuraat, insluitend die profetiese inhoud daarvan. Dink byvoorbeeld aan die profesie dat Christus in Betlehem van Judea gebore sou word, soos voorspel in Miga 5:2. Miga het sy profesie omstreeks 700 v.C. gegee. Waar is Christus sewe eeue later gebore? In Betlehem van Judea (Lukas 2:1-20; Matteus 2:1-12).

Aangesien Hy die toekoms kan voorspel, ken God beslis die toekoms. Jesaja het hierdie woorde oor God opgeteken: “Dink aan die vorige dinge van lankal af, want Ek is God, en daar is geen ander nie; Ek is God, en daar is niemand soos Ek nie, wat van die begin af die einde verkondig, en van die ou tyd af dinge wat nog nie gebeur het nie; wat sê: ‘My besluit sal uitgevoer word, en Ek sal al wat my welbehae behaag, volbring’” (Jesaja 46:9-10). God is die enigste Een wat aan die begin kan staan en die einde akkuraat kan verkondig.
God is alwetend; Hy weet alles wat werklik en moontlik is. God is ook ewig (Psalm 90:2). As die ewige, alwetende God, het Hy ons gisters, ons vandag en ons môres geleef, die verlede, hede en toekoms. God is die Alfa en Omega, die Begin en die Einde (Openbaring 21:6).
Daar is steeds profesieë in die Bybel wat wag op vervulling. Omdat God die toekoms ken, kan ons daarop staatmaak dat al die profesieë uiteindelik vervul sal word. Gebeure vind plaas in God se kalender volgens Sy plan. Ons weet wie die toekoms in besit neem—die een ware, persoonlike, ewige en alwetende God van die Bybel.
Today’s Devotional
Several times recently I have been reminded that God’s ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8). God’s ways and thoughts are indeed higher than ours (Isaiah 55:9). While I have ultimately surrendered to God and recognize that He is not obligated to explain His ways to me, I still often wonder why He so often works in mysterious ways.
I do not question His judgment. I do not doubt His wisdom. I absolutely do not think I could fully understand His ways even if He explained them to me. But, I sometimes still wonder why He accomplished something a certain way.
Why did He use a bunch of misunderstandings, personality conflicts, and bad attitudes to close a door, leading to a different door, which was the right door all along? Why not just divert us from the first door to begin with? Why not move us away from the wrong door earlier in the process? Why not convince us that it was the wrong door without us having to slam the door shut due to our own sinful attitudes and choices?
Why does God sometimes use a conflict over the color of carpet in a church building to split a church, creating a new growing and thriving church in a different area, instead of simply motivating some people in the church to go plant a new church?
Why did God allow Paul and Barnabas to split, apparently in anger, over a disagreement, instead of simply causing them to recognize that their outreach could be multiplied if they went separate directions (Acts 15:36-41)?
Why does God answer with “wait” to a continual prayer request over 20+ years of time and then grant the prayer request once the person isn’t even 100% certain he/she wants it anymore?
Why does God seem to provide a great solution to a difficult situation, with everyone agreeing that it is the perfect solution, only to later unravel the solution to everyone’s dismay?
Why does God sometimes work in mysterious ways?
As I said earlier, the answer, ultimately, is “I don’t know.” Learning to trust God when you don’t understand why He allowed something or why He chose a particular means to accomplish something is a key spiritual growth issue in the Christian life. Are you, like Job, able to praise the Lord whether He gives or takes away (Job 1:21)?
“Hindsight is 20/20” is not a biblical saying, but it is very true. There are many things God has done that I used to wonder about, that I now understand, or at least think I understand. There are numerous other things, though, that I definitely still do not understand and cannot imagine how the mysterious way in which God worked was the best way.
Yes, of course, God works all things together for good (Romans 8:28). Yes, absolutely, God uses the mysterious things that happen in our lives to mold us into the image of Christ and transform/renew our minds (Romans 12:1-2). But I still wonder why, when it was within His power to do so, God didn’t accomplish the same thing without using a plan that resulted in physical, emotional, and spiritual scars that won’t be fully healed this side of eternity.
Whether I ever receive the answers, whether such things ever make sense to me, I will continue to trust God and His Word. Why? If you think God’s ways are mysterious, just imagine what things would be like if I was in charge!

Ek is onlangs verskeie kere daaraan herinner dat God se weë nie ons weë is nie (Jesaja 55:8). God se weë en gedagtes is inderdaad hoër as ons s’n (Jesaja 55:9). Terwyl ek uiteindelik aan God oorgegee het en erken dat Hy nie verplig is om Sy weë aan my te verduidelik nie, wonder ek steeds dikwels hoekom Hy so dikwels op geheimsinnige maniere werk.
Ek bevraagteken nie Sy oordeel nie. Ek twyfel nie aan Sy wysheid nie. Ek dink absoluut nie ek sou Sy weë ten volle kon verstaan nie, selfs al het Hy dit aan my verduidelik. Maar ek wonder soms steeds hoekom Hy iets op ‘n sekere manier bereik het.
Waarom het Hy ‘n klomp misverstande, persoonlikheidskonflikte en slegte houdings gebruik om ‘n deur toe te maak, wat na ‘n ander deur lei, wat heeltyd die regte deur was? Waarom nie net van die eerste deur af weglei nie? Waarom ons nie vroeër in die proses van die verkeerde deur af wegbeweeg nie? Waarom ons nie oortuig dat dit die verkeerde deur was sonder dat ons die deur moes toeslaan as gevolg van ons eie sondige houdings en keuses nie?
Waarom gebruik God soms ‘n konflik oor die kleur van die tapyt in ‘n kerkgebou om ‘n kerk te verdeel en sodoende ‘n nuwe groeiende en florerende kerk in ‘n ander gebied te skep, in plaas daarvan om bloot sommige mense in die kerk te motiveer om ‘n nuwe kerk te plant?
Waarom het God toegelaat dat Paulus en Barnabas verdeel, blykbaar in woede, oor ‘n meningsverskil, in plaas daarvan om hulle bloot te laat besef dat hul uitreik vermenigvuldig kon word as hulle verskillende rigtings inslaan (Handelinge 15:36-41)?
Waarom antwoord God met “wag” op ‘n voortdurende gebedsversoek oor meer as 20 jaar en staan dan die gebedsversoek toe sodra die persoon nie meer 100% seker is dat hy/sy dit wil hê nie?
Waarom lyk dit asof God ‘n goeie oplossing vir ‘n moeilike situasie bied, met almal wat saamstem dat dit die perfekte oplossing is, net om later die oplossing tot almal se ontsteltenis te ontrafel?
Waarom werk God soms op geheimsinnige maniere?
Soos ek vroeër gesê het, is die antwoord uiteindelik “Ek weet nie.” Om te leer om God te vertrou wanneer jy nie verstaan waarom Hy iets toegelaat het of waarom Hy ‘n spesifieke manier gekies het om iets te bereik nie, is ‘n belangrike geestelike groeikwessie in die Christelike lewe. Kan jy, soos Job, die Here prys of Hy nou gee of wegneem (Job 1:21)?
“Agterskouend is 20/20” is nie ‘n Bybelse gesegde nie, maar dit is baie waar. Daar is baie dinge waaroor God gedoen het waaroor ek gewonder het, wat ek nou verstaan, of ten minste dink ek verstaan. Daar is egter talle ander dinge wat ek beslis nog steeds nie verstaan nie en nie kan indink hoe die geheimsinnige manier waarop God gewerk het die beste manier was nie.
Ja, natuurlik, God werk alle dinge ten goede mee (Romeine 8:28). Ja, absoluut, God gebruik die geheimsinnige dinge wat in ons lewens gebeur om ons na die beeld van Christus te vorm en ons denke te transformeer/vernuwe (Romeine 12:1-2). Maar ek wonder steeds hoekom, toe dit binne Sy mag was om dit te doen, God nie dieselfde ding bereik het sonder om ‘n plan te gebruik wat gelei het tot fisiese, emosionele en geestelike letsels wat nie ten volle aan hierdie kant van die ewigheid genees sal word nie.
Of ek ooit die antwoorde ontvang, of sulke dinge ooit vir my sin maak, ek sal aanhou om God en Sy Woord te vertrou. Hoekom? As jy dink God se weë is geheimsinnig, verbeel jou net hoe dinge sou wees as ek in beheer was!

God Is Aktief Om Ons Te Red En Te Herstel:
Onder die ruwe kranse van Brora, Skotland, het ‘n skaap gered moes word. Vasgevang aan die voet van ‘n krans, omring deur steil en onbuigsame rotse aan die een kant en die uitgestrekte oseaan aan die ander kant, was die skaap al twee lang jare op sy eie. Ten spyte van verskeie reddingspogings kon niemand haar bereik totdat ‘n vasberade boer genaamd Cammy Wilson en vier vriende ‘n riskante reddingsmissie suksesvol uitgevoer het nie. Drie lede van die span het versigtig byna 250 meter teen die krans afgeklim om haar te kry, met behulp van ‘n lier en baie moed om haar uit haar penarie te lig.
Die vasberade en simpatieke boer en span weerspieël die deernis van ons liefdevolle Vader soos uitgebeeld in Jeremia 23:1-3. Die profeet het Juda se sondige leiers veroordeel as herders wat “die skape van [God se] weiding vernietig en verstrooi het!” (v. 1). God het deur Jeremia verklaar dat Hy – as gevolg van die meedoënlose manier waarop hulle Sy hulpelose volk behandel het – “straf oor hulle sou gee” (v. 2). Hy het die lot van Sy verstrooide kudde gesien en was diep besorg oor hulle. God was nie net besorg nie, maar Hy het ook gesê dat Hy liefdevol Sy skape uit ballingskap sou bymekaarmaak en hulle na ‘n plek van veiligheid en oorvloed sou bring (v. 3).
Wanneer ons verlore, vasgevang of geïsoleerd voel, sien ons hemelse Vader ons benarde situasie raak en sal ons nie gestrand laat nie. Hy soek aktief daarna om ons te red en te herstel.
God Is Active in Saving and Restoring Us:
Below the rugged cliffs of Brora, Scotland, a sheep needed rescuing. Trapped at the foot of a cliff, surrounded by steep and unyielding rocks on one side and the vast ocean on the other, the sheep had been on its own for two long years. Despite several rescue attempts, no one could reach her until a determined farmer named Cammy Wilson and four friends successfully carried out a risky rescue mission. Three members of the team carefully climbed almost 800 feet (250 m) down the cliff to retrieve her, using a winch and a great deal of courage to lift her from her predicament.
The determined and sympathetic farmer and team reflect the compassion of our loving Father as depicted in Jeremiah 23:1-3. The prophet condemned Judah’s sinful leaders as shepherds who “destroyed and scattered the sheep of [God’s] pasture!” (v. 1). God declared through Jeremiah that because of the ruthless way they treated His helpless people, He would “bring judgment upon them” (v. 2). He saw the plight of His scattered flock and was deeply concerned for them. Not only was God concerned, but He also said that He would lovingly gather His sheep from captivity and bring them to a place of safety and abundance (v. 3).
When we feel lost, trapped, or isolated, our heavenly Father sees our plight and will not leave us stranded. He actively seeks to rescue and restore us.
