Bible Teaching of the Day

The Bible is by no means gender-neutral. It presents from beginning to end a thoroughly masculine perspective, and it often leaves it to the reader to decide what application to females or what inclusion of females is implied. Sometimes, a reference to men or brothers should be understood to include women; other times, men just means “men.” The context will provide the clues.

Determining whether the word man or brothers includes women comes down to rightly translating the passage and then properly interpreting its meaning. Good hermeneutics leads to accurate interpretations and the ability to know when a passage about “men” is exclusive (referring to strictly males) or inclusive (referring to both genders).

Some words are masculine in form, and it is clear from the context that they should be understood as referring to males only. For example, in Acts 7:2, when Stephen addresses his audience as “brothers and fathers,” he is not using those terms generically. The Sanhedrin body to whom he spoke was comprised of men, with no women.

Other words, although masculine in form, can be used as generic terms for both sexes. For example, man and sons are sometimes used to refer to “mankind” and “children” in general. In Ephesians 4:8 we read, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men” (ESV). Men here is a reference to all mankind—the Lord did not limit the spiritual gifts to the male population in the church. In Mathew 13:38, Jesus speaks of “the sons of the kingdom” and “the sons of the evil one” (ESV). The word sons is masculine, of course, yet in this context it simply means “people” or “offspring.” These examples demonstrate an important point about language. Most words in any language do not have a single, all-encompassing meaning, but context plays a part in determining definition.

Sometimes, the translation of a text makes subtle changes in gender-related words. For example, the King James Version of John 1:12 says, “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.” However, the English word sons, a masculine word, replaces a neuter word in the Greek; a better translation is “children of God,” which is how the King James 2000 has it.

A related question is why does the Bible use only masculine generic terms? Why can children be referred to as “sons,” but they are never called (generically) “daughters”? It is apparent that, in the culture of the biblical writers, it was standard practice to use the generic masculine. It was just how people thought and how they talked. For centuries in modern English, we also used the generic masculine—he was an acceptable substitute for he or she when referring to an unknown person. In contemporary language, people in the West have grown sensitive to gender-specific language: calling a firefighter a “fireman” is frowned upon as sexist, even if he is obviously male. English students are taught to say “he or she” or, more commonly, “they” (even when referring to a single individual), since the plural is gender-neutral.

Many Bible translations in recent years have adopted a more gender-neutral wording. For example, 1 Thessalonians 4:1 is translated as “brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God” (NIV), even though the word for “sisters” is not in the Greek text. The translators added “and sisters” in the interest of gender neutrality. Does the insertion of and sisters result in a less exact rendering of the Greek text? Yes, it does. But, since Paul was obviously writing to the entire church (which included sisters in Christ), the inclusion of and sisters does no damage to the intent of this particular passage. God’s Word is not distorted by such a modification. Using more generic words such as people, parents, and descendants instead of man, father, and sons may help eliminate confusion, avoid misunderstandings, and avert unnecessary offense in modern times.

“IF GOD HAD A REFRIGERATOR”

A few nights ago my family and I were watching a “Gaither” DVD. In the show Mark Lowry spoke and said: “If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.” (translated) And it got me thinking:

If God had a refrigerator, what would He put on it? Well, if God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. And next to it there would be a calendar with everyone’s birthdays, even yours, while your name would also be on His to-do list because there is so much He wants to do and give you. And maybe there would also be a love letter, especially to you, that read:

My child, you may not even know me but I know everything about you. I know your sitting down and your rising up and I am familiar with all your ways. (Psalm 139:1-3) I even know how many hairs are on your head (Matthew 10:29-31) for I made you in my image. (Genesis 1:27) Even before you were born I knew you (Jeremiah 1:4-5) and already chose you when I planned the creation. (Ephesians 1:11-12)

Your life is not a mistake. I did not make a mistake because all your days are already recorded. (Psalm 139:15-16) I decided when you would be born and where you would live. (Acts 17:26) I made you wonderfully, woven you together in your mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:13-14) It was I who produced you. (Psalm 71:6)

I am the perfect Father. (Matthew 5:48) Every good thing you have comes from my hand. (James 1:17) I supply every need. (Matthew 6:31-33) My plan for your life is filled with hope. INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL ARTISTS

MEET : The Gaither Vocal Band 

The Gaither Vocal Band is an American southern gospel vocal group, named after its founder and leader Bill Gaither. On March 1, 2017, it was announced that the Gaither Vocal Band lineup consisted of Reggie Smith, Wes Hampton, Adam Crabb, Todd Suttles, and Bill Gaither. Although the group started out recording contemporary Christian music in the 1980s, it became known for southern gospel after the popularity of the Gaither Homecoming videos.

The lineup of the band changes often, with artists leaving to work on solo careers, and new and old ones coming to replace them. Besides Gaither, singers with the longest tenure in the band include Guy Penrod (1995–2009), Mark Lowry (1988–2001, 2009–14), Michael English (1985–94, 2009–14), David Phelps (1997–2005, 2009–17) and Wes Hampton (2005–present).

The band has released 29 albums (not including compilations), at least 19 of which have charted. The band has also released 10 DVDs, which feature many other Christian artists as well. The Gaither Vocal Band has been honored with two Grammys and 17 Dove Awards.

History
Beginnings

The Gaither Vocal Band is named after gospel leader Bill Gaither.It was the successor-group of the Bill Gaither Trio. By the 1980s, Bill Gaither, along with wife Gloria Gaither, were both very successful songwriters. For example, their song, “He Touched Me” was covered by Elvis Presley, after which he named his album He Touched Me. Presley won a Grammy for the album. Bill Gaither felt that his trio had reached its peak in the mid-1980s, but his desire to make another gospel hit kept the trio going.

The original Vocal Band (called the New Gaither Vocal Band) was formed spontaneously, backstage of a Gaither Trio concert. It consisted of Bill Gaither and Gary McSpadden of the trio, along with two of the trio’s backup singers, Steve Green and Lee Young. The quartet sang “Your First Day in Heaven” on stage that night.[5] Their debut album, the self-titled The New Gaither Vocal Band, debuted in 1981.

According to the liner notes of the CD compilation The Best of the GVB, the term “vocal band” was used instead of “quartet” because it did not limit Gaither in terms of sound or number of group members.

Young left the group in 1982, and Jon Mohr was hired as the new bass singer. They then recorded the album Passin’ the Faith Along. Later, tenor Green left and Larnelle Harris was hired. This group cut the New Point Of View album before Mohr left.

Widespread popularity
Michael English was hired as the new lead singer, so McSpadden was moved down to baritone, and Gaither dropped to bass. At this point the group dropped the “new” part of their name. Although the previous album (New Point of View) had been more contemporary than its predecessors, the album with this version of the group (One X 1) took it even further. After this album, Harris left and was replaced by Lemuel Miller. The group did not record an album with Miller before he too left. He was replaced by Imperials alumnus Jim Murray. This line up cut one album (Wings) before McSpadden left to start his solo career. Mark Lowry was convinced to replace him. Their Gospel roots project Homecoming was released in 1991. Murray left and was replaced by Terry Franklin. The album Southern Classics was released in 1993 with the hit “I Bowed on My Knees” (This song was co-written by Jeremy Ward).

Later English left. He was replaced by Buddy Mullins. Mullins was only a temporary fill-in, but he was included on the album Testify. Franklin soon left and was replaced by yet another Imperials alumnus, Jonathan Pierce (formerly known as Jonathan Hildreth, his first and last name, then changed to his first and middle name). Strengthened by the popularity of the Homecoming video series, the Vocal Band added Guy Penrod at lead. After Pierce’s departure, Gaither hired David Phelps at tenor. After Lowry’s departure, Imperials alumnus Russ Taff sang baritone for a couple of years. Marshall Hall was his replacement. Wes Hampton succeeded Phelps in 2005.

The group has had three number one songs on the Singing News chart. “Yes, I Know” held the top position from July to October 1997, as did “I Will Go On” in November 2006. “Greatly Blessed” was their third number one single. The group has routinely performed classic Southern Gospel songs including many written by Bill and Gloria Gaither like “He Touched Me”, “I Believe In A Hill Called Mount Calvary”, and “Sinner Saved By Grace”.

Reunion
In July 2008, the vocal band recorded a reunion DVD at the Gaither Studios — The Gaither Vocal Band Reunion, Volumes 1 and 2. Except for Pierce, Franklin, and Miller, the former and present members appeared and performed. The two CDs debuted in the top two positions on Billboard’s Contemporary Christian Album chart, marking the Gaither Vocal Band’s first No. 1 on the Christian Album chart. The DVDs of the same title debuted in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions on the Music Video charts as well. It also garnered a Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country, Bluegrass Gospel Album.

The quintet

In January 2009, Hall and Penrod left. Gaither brought back some former members: Michael English as lead vocal, Mark Lowry as baritone and David Phelps as tenor. The first album by this five-member version was Reunited, released in September 2009. It was also the first album of the vocal band ever to feature only songs written by Bill and Gloria Gaither. A live album called Better Day was released in January 2010. In August 2010, they released the long-awaited album called Greatly Blessed, followed by I Am A Promise, a children’s album, released in August 2011. Their most recent album was Pure & Simple, released in September 2012.

In October 2013, it was announced that Lowry and English would be leaving the group to devote more time to their solo careers.English’s departure was immediate whereas Lowry stayed on until they could find another baritone to replace him. Their last album as members, Hymns, was released in March 2014 and was nominated for a Grammy Award the following December. After their departure, several guests filled-in until two new members could be found. In January 2014, it was announced that Adam Crabb (of The Crabb Family) would join the group as the fourth member and lead singer. Todd Suttles joined the group as the baritone singer one month later.

Following their formation, the new quintet would go on to release a limited edition album, The New Edition, which could only be purchased at concert performances. In October 2014, the group released their first album together, entitled Sometimes it Takes a Mountain. Five months later, that album was followed by a two-DVD live performance release and the release of their second album (a live performance album), Happy Rhythm. Upon release, the DVDs debuted at the top of Billboard’s Music Video chart (Sometimes it Takes a Mountain at #1 and Happy Rhythm at #2).In August 2016, the group’s album Better Together was released.

In March 2017, it was announced that Phelps would be leaving the group on April 1, and Reggie Smith would join the group as tenor.

In October 2017, this line-up released their first studio album, entitled We Have This Moment.

In October 2018, there was another Gaither Vocal Band Reunion. It was a two-day concert, recorded live. Except for Green, all of the past and present members who were at the first reunion performed.

Jerusalem’s hills rang with psalms, and the nations looked to Zion with awe. Today, we stand at a crossroads. A secular government, swayed by globalist pressures, drifts from this heritage, prioritizing compromise over covenant. Yet, the spirit of HOPA is awakening our people, and a coalition of Israel’s brightest stars is rising to lead us back to that glory. Picture singers Eyal Golan and Kobi Peretz, their voices stirring thousands at concerts from Jerusalem’s Old City to the hills of Judea and Samaria. Envision actors Tsahi Halevi and Noa Tishby, beloved by millions, rallying youth to this cause. See CEOs like Mobileye’s Amnon Shashua and Check Point’s Gil Shwed, giants of innovation, pouring resources into this revival. And hear revered rabbis, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu and Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, joined by educators, activists, and community leaders, uniting to champion a sacred mission.

At HOPA’s heart are small but mighty Knesset factions: Shas, with its Sephardi devotion; United Torah Judaism, steadfast in Haredi tradition; Religious Zionism, burning with zeal for our biblical land. These parties, commanding 20-30 seats, hold the key to a 61-vote majority. With one Basic Law, passed in weeks, they can declare the Sanhedrin—reestablished in 2004 by courageous rabbis—as Israel’s supreme authority, its Torah-based rulings binding over secular laws. The offerings will return, their smoke rising as a sign of our closeness to Hashem. The Third Temple, the House of Prayer foretold by Isaiah, will rise to bless all nations. One vote, one sacred act, and the world is transformed, as swift as David’s sling felling Goliath.

This vision transcends our borders. The world stands ready to join us. America, our steadfast ally, is poised to champion this revival. Evangelical Christians, millions strong, see the Temple’s rise as biblical prophecy unfolding. Billionaires, from Silicon Valley’s tech titans to New York’s philanthropists like Miriam Adelson, and royals, from Gulf palaces to European dynasties, are prepared to empty their coffers, funding the Temple as a global sanctuary. From Brazil’s faithful to India’s spiritual seekers, the nations yearn for this House of Prayer, perhaps even more than we do. As Isaiah proclaimed, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” By restoring the Sanhedrin, we ignite a spiritual renewal that will heal a fractured world, fulfilling Israel’s role as a beacon once again.

Opposition will rise. A secular government, clinging to power, resists honoring Hashem as our true King. Backed by a Supreme Court that often defies our traditions and globalist allies who dilute our Jewish soul, they will fight this vision with every tool at their disposal. Left-leaning parties, media skeptics, and international critics will claim HOPA threatens democracy. But their voices cannot drown out ours. With 30% of our nation—two million Haredim, Religious Zionists, and allies—and the world’s faithful behind us, we are unstoppable. We must make our voices heard through votes, rallies, and prayers, showing the world that Israel’s heart beats with Torah.

This is our moment. Let celebrities host concerts, their songs echoing David’s psalms. Let CEOs fund campaigns, their wealth building a new Zion. Let rabbis unite, endorsing the Sanhedrin with one voice. Let every citizen, whether Likud, Labor, or unaffiliated, join hands across party lines. Former ambassador to Vatican accuses Israel of ‘boycotting’ Pope’s funeral

Former Israeli ambassador to the Vatican Raphael Schutz criticized Israel’s decision not to send a delegation to Pope Francis’s funeral.

Instead, Israel’s current Ambassador to the Vatican Yaron Sideman represented Israel at the Pope’s burial.

US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, other heads of state, and 200,000 others attended the funeral.

In an interview with Israel’s Ynet online outlet, Schutz said, “When a leader of this importance passes away, you don’t deviate from diplomatic protocols.”

He continued, “We should discuss our disagreements with the Vatican only with the Vatican, not boycott the funeral. It was a funeral attended by the whole world, from Trump downwards. Israel’s absence creates a bad impression of us with the entire Catholic Christian world – 1.3 billion people.”

Schutz concluded, “Never mind that the funeral was a chance to connect with other world leaders, as always happens at such funerals. Israel, with its absence, in addition to the antagonism it created with the Christian world, also put on display its political isolation. This is not a good look for us, certainly not in these times.”

He also criticized the fact that it took four days for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express condolences over the Pope’s death and that the Foreign Ministry deleted a tweet saying, “May he rest in peace.”

Israeli officials confirmed that the reason for the silence from the prime minister and the Foreign Ministry after the latter’s posts were deleted was the Pope’s many statements criticizing Israel.

Last Christmas, in a display by the Vatican, a baby Jesus in a nativity scene was draped in a keffiyeh, showing solidarity with Palestinians, before the garment was removed.

Francis remarked that Israel’s operations in Gaza “is not a war. It’s cruelty,” and he accused the Jewish state of “bombing children and mowing them down with machine guns.” He also claimed that “what is happening in Gaza has characteristics of genocide.”

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summary

Summary of the Song of Solomon
Author:
Solomon wrote Song of Solomon, according to the first verse. This song is one
of 1,005 that Solomon wrote (1 Kings 4:32). The title “Song of Songs” is a superlative,
meaning this is the best one.
Date of Writing: Solomon most likely wrote this song during the early part of his reign.
This would place the date of composition around 965 B.C.
Purpose of Writing: The Song of Solomon is a lyric poem written to extol the virtues of love between a husband and his wife. The poem clearly presents marriage as God’s
design. A man and woman are to live together within the context of marriage, loving
each other spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
This book combats two extremes: asceticism (the denial of all pleasure) and hedonism
(the pursuit of only pleasure). The marriage profiled in Song of Solomon is a model of
care, commitment, and delight.
Key Verses:
Song of Solomon 2:7; 3:5; 8:4 – “Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.”
Song of Solomon 5:1 – “Eat, O friends, and drink; drink your fill, O lovers.”
Song of Solomon 8:6-7 – “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing
fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.”
Brief Summary: The poetry takes the form of a dialogue between a husband (the king)
and his wife (the Shulamite). We can divide the book into three sections: the courtship
(1:1 – 3:5); the wedding (3:6 – 5:1); and the maturing marriage (5:2 – 8:14).
The song begins before the wedding, as the bride-to-be longs to be with her betrothed,
and she looks forward to his intimate caresses. However, she advises letting love
develop naturally, in its own time. The king praises the Shulamite’s beauty, overcoming
her feelings of insecurity about her appearance. The Shulamite has a dream in which she loses Solomon and searches throughout the city for him. With the help of the city
guards, she finds her beloved and clings to him, taking him to a safe place. Upon
waking, she repeats her injunction not to force love.
On the wedding night, the husband again praises the beauty of his wife, and in highly
symbolic language, the wife invites her spouse to partake of all she has to offer. They
make love, and God blesses their union.
As the marriage matures, the husband and wife go through a difficult time, symbolized
in another dream. In this second dream, the Shulamite rebuffs her husband, and he
leaves. Overcome with guilt, she searches the city for him; but this time, instead of
helping her, the guards beat her—symbolic of her pained conscience. Things end
happily as the lovers reunite and are reconciled.
As the song ends, both the husband and wife are confident and secure in their love,
they sing of the lasting nature of true love, and they yearn to be in each other’s
presence.
Foreshadowings: Some Bible interpreters see in Song of Solomon an exact symbolic
representation of Christ and His church. Christ is seen as the king, while the church is
represented by the Shulamite. While we believe the book should be understood literally
as a depiction of marriage, there are some elements that foreshadow the Church and
her relationship with her king, the Lord Jesus. Song of Solomon 2:4 describes the
experience of every believer who is sought and bought by the Lord Jesus. We are in a
place of great spiritual wealth and are covered by His love. Verse 16 of chapter 2 says,
“My beloved is mine, and I am his. He feeds his flock among the lilies” (NKJV). Here is a picture of not only the security of the believer in Christ (John 10:28-29), but of the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep—believers—and lays down His life for us (John 10:11).
Because of Him, we are no longer stained by sin, having had our “spots” removed by His blood (Song of Solomon 4:7; Ephesians 5:27).
Practical Application: Our world is confused about marriage. The prevalence of divorce and modern attempts to redefine marriage stand in glaring contrast to Solomon’s Song.
Marriage, says the biblical poet, is to be celebrated, enjoyed, and revered. This book
provides some practical guidelines for strengthening our marriages:
1) Give your spouse the attention he or she needs. Take the time to truly know your
spouse.
2) Encouragement and praise, not criticism, are vital to a successful relationship.
3) Enjoy each other. Plan some getaways. Be creative, even playful, with each other.
Delight in God’s gift of married love.
4) Do whatever is necessary to reassure your commitment to your spouse. Renew your vows; work through problems and do not consider divorce as a solution. God intends for you both to live in a deeply peaceful, secure love.

bewaar sy gebooie, want dit is die hele plig van die mens.”

Maar by Christus is die lewe maar ‘n skaduwee van die heerlikhede wat kom in ‘n hemel wat slegs deur Hom toeganklik is.
