The Road to Emmaues
The events on the road to Emmaus are discussed in Luke 24. In this final chapter of Luke’s Gospel, we read of two disciples (Cleopas and one unnamed) of Jesus who were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus on the day that Jesus rose from the dead. As they traveled, a man joined them—the resurrected Jesus, although they did not recognize Him. The man asked, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” (Luke 24:17).
The two disciples were surprised that the man had not heard of the recent events that had Jerusalem in turmoil. They proceeded to tell the stranger of Jesus’ crucifixion and the report of His empty tomb. Jesus responded, “‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24:25-27).
So, as they walked, Jesus taught what the Old Testament had predicted about Himself. When they arrived in Emmaus that evening, the two disciples stopped to eat, and they asked Jesus to join them. He did, and as He broke the bread and blessed the meal, “their eyes were opened” (verse 31), and they recognized Him. Jesus then vanished.
Their response? Luke reports, “They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, ‘It is true! The Lord has risen’” (verses 33-34).
On the road to Emmaus, Jesus gave a lesson on the prophecies of the Old Testament which were fulfilled in His death and resurrection. What a lesson that would have been! The Author of the Book explains His work, making connections from Scripture to the events they had recently experienced.
The disciples’ reaction to Jesus’ lesson was one of deep conviction of the truth of what He was teaching. “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked?” they ask each other (verse 32). Their physical eyes were blinded to the identity of Jesus, but their eyes of faith were being opened as Jesus opened the Scriptures to them.
Following this account, Jesus appears to His other disciples, removing all doubt that He was alive. Jesus had promised that He would show Himself to those who love Him (John 14:21), and this is exactly what He does on the road to Emmaus.
The story of the disciples on the Emmaus Road is important for many reasons. It provides an emphasis on the Old Testament prophecies related to Jesus, evidence regarding an additional appearance of Jesus, and a connection regarding the many eyewitnesses of the resurrected Jesus. Luke 24 is often seen as a model of the journey that Jesus makes with many of us today, as He opens our eyes, points us to the Word, and reveals Himself along life’s walk as the resurrected Savior and Lord.

Toe hulle daardie aand in Emmaus aankom, het die twee dissipels gestop om te eet, en hulle het Jesus gevra om by hulle aan te sluit. Hy het, en toe Hy die brood breek en die maaltyd seën, “gaan hulle oë oop” (vers 31), en hulle het Hom herken. Jesus het toe verdwyn.
Hulle reaksie? Lukas berig: “Hulle het opgestaan en dadelik na Jerusalem teruggekeer. Daar het hulle die elf en die wat saam met hulle was, gevind, bymekaargekom en gesê: ‘Dit is waar! Die Here het opgestaan'” (verse 33-34).
Op pad na Emmaus het Jesus ‘n les gegee oor die profesieë van die Ou Testament wat in Sy dood en opstanding vervul is. Wat ‘n les sou dit gewees het! Die Outeur van die Boek verduidelik Sy werk en maak verbindings van die Skrif tot die gebeure wat hulle onlangs beleef het.
Die dissipels se reaksie op Jesus se les was een van diepe oortuiging van die waarheid van wat Hy leer. “Het ons harte nie in ons gebrand terwyl hy gepraat het nie?” vra hulle vir mekaar (vers 32). “GOD’S PROMISES”
Like others, I also enjoy reading God’s promises to us. Yet there were times when it seemed as if God’s promises took longer than I expected or had not yet been fulfilled. After prayer, the Lord gave me Job 22. In this short teaching, I would like to share what I received from the Lord:
In Job 22:27 – 30, the Lord gives several promises. It reads: “You will pray to him, and he will answer you; you will pay your vows. You will decide a thing, and it will be established; and light will shine on your ways. When he goes down, you will say, ‘Go up!’ And he will save the one who is downcast. He will save even the innocent; yes, he will be saved by the cleanness of your hands.”
Unfortunately, we cannot rely on these promises unless we fulfill the terms and conditions as the Lord gave us in Job 22:21-26. It reads: “Make your peace with him, and you will have peace; then good things will come to you. Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up; if you remove unrighteousness from your tent. And cast the gold of Ophir into the dust, and among the rocks of the brooks. Then the Almighty will be your gold and your bars of silver. For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.”
Yet there are those who believe that they do not need to fulfill the terms and conditions. They think that it is legalistic and that we are no longer under the law but live by grace. I invite those to look at Revelation 3:17-20 which reads: “For you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Be diligent therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock. If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and sup with him, and he with me.
In order to see God’s promises in our lives, it is essential that:
- We will make peace with God and come into friendship with Him. Friendship here speaks of repentance -see Job 22:21. This requirement is also emphasized in Job 22:23 as well as in Revelation 3:20.
* We study the Word so that we can be taught by God – see Job 22:22
* We remove injustice or sin from our lives – see Job 22:23 and Revelation 3:19
* We stop relying on our own wealth or abilities – see Job 22:24
* We allow God to become our wealth and give us wisdom – see Job 22:25 and Revelation 3:18
* We will always trust in God and maintain our joy in Him – see Job 3:26
* We realize anew that God will honor his word and keep his promises if we again make him our wealth – see Job 22:26 – 30 and Revelation 3:20

“GOD’S BELOFTES”
Soos ander lees ek ook graag God se beloftes aan ons. Tog was daar tye waar dit gelyk het asof God se beloftes langer neem as wat ek verwag of nog nie in vervulling gekom het nie. Na gebed het Here Job 22 vir my gegee. In die kort lering wil ek graag deel wat ek van die Here ontvang het:
In Job 22: 27 – 30 gee die Here verskeie beloftes. Dit lees: “Jy sal tot Hom bid, en Hy sal jou verhoor; en jy sal jou geloftes betaal. Besluit jy iets, dan kom dit tot stand; en oor jou weë skyn ‘n lig. As dié afdraand loop, dan sê jy: Boontoe! En hom wat neerslagtig is, verlos Hy. Hy red selfs hom wat nie onskuldig is nie: ja, hy word gered deur die reinheid van jou hande.”
Ongelukkig kan ons nie staatmaak op hierdie beloftes tensy ons die terme en voorwaardes nakom soos die Here dit aan ons gegee het in Job 22: 21 – 26. Dit lees: “Sluit tog vriendskap met Hom, sodat jy vrede kan hê; daardeur sal goeie dinge oor jou kom. Neem tog uit sy mond onderrig aan, en lê sy woorde weg in jou hart. As jy tot die Almagtige terugkeer, sal jy gebou word; as jy die onreg verwyder uit jou tent. En gooi die gouderts in die stof en tussen die rotse van die spruite die goud van Ofir. Dan sal die Almagtige jou gouderts wees en stawe silwer vir jou. Want dan sal jy in die Almagtige jou verlustig en jou aangesig tot God ophef.
Tog is daar diegene wat glo dat hul nie nodig het om die terme en voorwaardes n ate kom nie. Hul reken dat dit wetties is en dat ons nie meer onder die wet is nie maar deur die genade leef. Ek nooi diegene om na Openbaring 3: 17 – 20 te kyk wat lees: “Want jy sê: Ek is ryk en het verryk geword en het aan niks gebrek nie; en jy weet nie dat dit jy is wat ellendig en beklaenswaardig en arm en blind en naak is nie. Ek raai jou aan om van My te koop goud wat deur vuur gelouter is, sodat jy kan ryk word; en wit klere, dat jy jou kan aantrek en die skande van jou naaktheid nie openbaar word nie; en salf om jou oë te salf, sodat jy kan sien. Almal wat Ek liefhet, bestraf en tugtig Ek. Wees dan ywerig en bekeer jou. Kyk, Ek staan by die deur en Ek klop. As iemand my stem hoor en die deur oopmaak, sal Ek ingaan na hom toe en saam met hom maaltyd hou, en hy met My.
Ten einde God se beloftes in ons lewens te sien, dit noodsaaklik dat:
- Ons vrede met God sal maak en met Hom in vriendskap kom. Vriendskap spreek hier van bekering -sien Job 22:21. Hierdie vereiste word ook beklemtoon in Job 22: 23 asook in Openbaringe 3:20.
* Ons die Woord bestudeer sodat ons deur God onderrig kan word – sien Job 22: 22
* Ons die onreg of sonde uit ons lewens verwyder – sien Job22: 23 en Openbaringe 3: 19
* Ons ophou om op ons eie rykdom of vermoëns staat te maak – sien Job 22: 24
* Ons toelaat dat God ons rykdom word en vir ons wysheid gee – sien Job 22: 25 en Openbaringe 3: 18
* Ons altyd op God sal vertrou en ons vreugde in Hom behou – sien Job 3:26
* Ons opnuut besef dat God sy word sal eer en sy beloftes gestand sal doen as ons hom weer ons rykdom maak – sien Job 22: 26 – 30 asook Openbaring 3:20

The Secret Rapture and Israel – (From a Jewish Point of View)
The Secret Rapture is not biblical; it distorts and devalues the role of the Jewish people and the purpose of the Third Temple. It marginalizes the Jewish people, portraying them as unworthy to be claimed by a returning Messiah. It is time to remove antisemitism from the Christian Church and its teachings about the last days.
The Secret Rapture teaches that the return of Jesus Christ will be secret. He comes secretly and snatches His followers away to go to heaven with Him. They speculate others might be standing in front of you talking, and suddenly they will disappear in the rapture and be taken to heaven, leaving you wondering, “Where did they go?” The word “rapture” is actually not in the Bible.
The Jews are excluded from this rapture, but later are converted to become a part of the 144,000 who preach the gospel to those left behind. This part of the teaching is antisemitic for the Secret Rapture. Those who teach this fail to understand that the Jews are God’s chosen people and have their own covenant relationship with God. As Christians, we are grafted into the covenant promises made to the Jews with them to partake of the Olive tree representing Israel according to the apostle Paul (Romans 11:17). Concerning Israel, he says the gifts and calling of God for Israel are irrevocable (Romans 11:29). The teaching that Christ is not coming back for the Jew, but only the Christian Church as His bride, is not biblical. The bride in Scripture is a Jewish Bride (Revelation 21:2). The Secret Rapture is one of the most antisemitic teachings Christians hold and teach today.
The Origin of the Secret Rapture
The Secret Rapture goes back to the time of the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther and John Calvin taught that the Catholic Church or the Papacy was the Antichrist in prophecy. Catholic leaders wanted a way to counter this teaching, so they called in two of their Jesuit scholars and asked them to develop an alternative teaching.
A Spanish Jesuit priest, Alchsar, developed what is known as Preterism in 1554. He taught that the Antichrist appeared in the past with the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. by Rome. Therefore, the Pope is not the Antichrist.
The second priest was Francisco Ribera. In 1537, he wrote and taught what is known as “Futurism.” He split the return of Jesus into two events. His first appearance will be secret, where He will rapture away His followers. No one will see Him. Revelation chapters 1 to 4 are seen as for the Church. The rest of the Book of Revelation is fulfilled in the future after the Church is gone. The Antichrist appears after the rapture in the model of Futurism. Therefore, the Catholic Church or its head cannot be the Antichrist because he will not appear until the Church is raptured away. These alternative teachings were developed to deceive Protestants. If Martin Luther, who started the Reformation, knew his followers were teaching the Secret Rapture hatched by the Papacy, he would turn over in his grave.
How the Secret Rapture Teaching Came into Modern Times
Futurism and the rapture were put into the footnotes of the Scofield Bible. Charles Darby of England picked up this teaching and started using it. Years later, Hal Lindsey in America used it in his book, The Late Great Planet Earth. He later made a movie on this popular teaching. The release of the book and film in the 1960s was the beginning of introducing this teaching to mainline churches in America. This teaching was followed by the Thief in the Night films in the early 1970s, and later with the Left Behind series in 2006 by Tim LaHaye. What all this history tells us is that the Secret Rapture has only been used as a widespread teaching in churches since the early 1960s. It is now taught in most Bible schools. It was not taught by the Bible or by the early Church Fathers. It is a modern theological invention. END OF ARTICLE IN THE NEWS

Summary of the Book of
Nehemiah
Author: The book of Nehemiah does not specifically name its author, but Jewish and
Christian traditions recognize either Ezra or Nehemiah as the author. It is likely that the
books of Ezra and Nehemiah were originally one. Full article: Who wrote the book of

Date of Writing: The Book of Nehemiah was likely written between 445 and 420 B.C.
Purpose of Writing: The Book of Nehemiah, one of the history books of the Bible,
continues the story of Israel’s return from the Babylonian captivity and the rebuilding of
Jerusalem.
Key Verses:
Nehemiah 1:3, “They said to me, ‘Those who survived the exile and are back in the
province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its
gates have been burned with fire.'”
Nehemiah 1:11, “O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and
to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant
success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.”
Nehemiah 6:15-16, “So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two
days. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid
and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with
the help of our God.”
Brief Summary: Nehemiah was a Hebrew in Persia when the word reached him that the
Temple in Jerusalem was being reconstructed. He grew anxious knowing there was no
wall to protect the city. Nehemiah invited God to use him to save the city. God answered
his prayer by softening the heart of the Persian king, Artaxerxes, who gave not only his
blessing, but also supplies to be used in the project. Nehemiah is given permission by
the king to return to Jerusalem, where he is made governor.
In spite of opposition and accusations the wall was built and the enemies silenced. The
people, inspired by Nehemiah, give tithes of much money, supplies, and manpower to
complete the wall in a remarkable 52 days, despite much opposition. This united effort is
short-lived, however, because Jerusalem falls back into apostasy when Nehemiah leaves
for a while. When he returned to Jerusalem, Nehemiah found the walls strong but the
people weak. He set about the task of teaching the people morality and he didn’t mince
words. “I argued with those people, put curses on them, hit some of them and pulled
out their hair” (13:25). He reestablishes true worship through prayer and by encouraging
the people to revival by reading and adhering to the Word of God.
Foreshadowings: Nehemiah was a man of prayer and he prayed passionately for his
people (Nehemiah 1). His zealous intercession for God’s people foreshadows our great
Intercessor, Jesus Christ, who prayed fervently for His people in His high-priestly prayer
in John 17. Both Nehemiah and Jesus had a burning love for God’s people which they
poured out in prayer to God, interceding for them before the throne.
Practical Application: Nehemiah led the Israelites into a respect and love for the text of
Scripture. Nehemiah, because of his love for God and his desire to see God honored and
glorified, led the Israelites towards the faith and obedience God had desired for them
for so long. In the same way, Christians are to love and revere the truths of Scripture,
commit them to memory, meditate on them day and night, and turn to them for the
fulfillment of every spiritual need. Second Timothy 3:16–17 tells us, “All scripture is given
by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished
unto all good works.” If we expect to experience the spiritual revival of the Israelites
(Nehemiah 8:1-8), we must begin with God’s Word.
Each of us ought to have genuine compassion for others who have spiritual or physical
hurts. To feel compassion, yet do nothing to help, is unfounded biblically. At times we
may have to give up our own comfort in order to minister properly to others. We must
totally believe in a cause before we will give our time or money to it with the right heart.
When we allow God to minister through us, even unbelievers will know it is God’s work.

daar geen muur was om die stad te beskerm nie. Nehemia het God genooi om hom te
gebruik om die stad te red. God het sy gebed verhoor deur die hart van die Persiese
koning, Artasasta, wat nie net sy seën gegee het nie, maar ook voorrade wat in die
projek gebruik moes word, te versag. Nehemia kry toestemming van die koning om na
Jerusalem terug te keer, waar hy goewerneur aangestel word.
Ten spyte van opposisie en beskuldigings is die muur gebou en die vyande het

moedig tot herlewing deur die Woord van God te lees en aan te hou.
Voorspellings: Nehemia was ‘n man van gebed en hy het passievol vir sy volk gebid (
Nehemia 1 ). Sy ywerige voorbidding vir God se volk voorspel ons groot Voorbidder,
Jesus Christus, wat vurig vir Sy volk gebid het in Sy hoëpriesterlike gebed in Johannes 17
. Beide Nehemia en Jesus het ‘n brandende liefde vir God se volk gehad wat hulle in
gebed tot God uitgestort het en vir hulle voor die troon intree.
Praktiese Toepassing: Nehemia het die Israeliete gelei tot respek en liefde vir die teks
van die Skrif. Nehemia, as gevolg van sy liefde vir God en sy begeerte om God geëer en
verheerlik te sien, het die Israeliete gelei tot die geloof en gehoorsaamheid wat God vir
so lank vir hulle verlang het. Op dieselfde manier moet Christene die waarhede van die
Skrif liefhê en eerbiedig, dit aan die geheue verbind, dag en nag daaroor mediteer en na
hulle wend vir die vervulling van elke geestelike behoefte. Tweede Timoteus 3:16-17 sê
vir ons, “Die hele Skrif is deur God ingegee en is nuttig tot lering, tot weerlegging, tot
teregwysing, tot onderwysing in die geregtigheid, sodat die mens van God volmaak kan
wees, vir almal volkome toegerus. goeie werke.” As ons verwag om die geestelike
herlewing van die Israeliete te ervaar ( Nehemia 8:1-8 ), moet ons met God se Woord
begin.
Elkeen van ons behoort opregte deernis te hê met ander wat geestelike of fisiese
seerkry het. Om medelye te voel, maar niks te doen om te help nie, is Bybels ongegrond.
Soms moet ons dalk ons eie gemak prysgee om ander behoorlik te bedien. Ons moet
heeltemal in ‘n saak glo voordat ons ons tyd of geld met die regte hart daaraan sal gee.
Wanneer ons God toelaat om deur ons te bedien, sal selfs ongelowiges weet dat dit God
se werk is.
