The Sting of Death , Is Sin.
After a taunting of death in the previous verses, the apostle Paul writes, “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law” (1 Corinthians 15:56, ESV). To understand the meaning of this verse, we must explore the relationship between the law, sin, and death.
In saying “the sting of death is sin,” Paul likens death to a living monstrosity on the attack. Its envenomed weapon—its sting—is what gives death its poisonous power over people. In fact, if it were not for sin, death would be no enemy at all—nothing but a fangless serpent or a tailless scorpion. It is our sin that puts us in mortal danger.
In 1 Corinthians 15:54–55, Paul quotes Hosea 13:14, saying, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (ESV). Here, Paul declares that death has been defeated (see 1 Corinthians 15:26). As a defeated opponent, it no longer has the same sting. The venom has been removed. But, for unbelievers, the sting remains. They are haunted by death and judgment because of their unrepentance and willful rejection of Christ. For believers, however, the sting of death has been removed by faith in the sacrificial death and victorious resurrection of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13; 1 Peter 2:24).
The sting of death originated in the Garden of Eden. Because of Adam’s disobedience, “sin came into the world . . . and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12, ESV). Sin is the “sting” or root cause of death (Romans 6:23). If Adam had not sinned, then people would not die. Death must be understood in two ways: (1) physical and (2) spiritual. Physical death is the termination of our biological existence, whereas spiritual death is separation from God, who alone is the true source of life (John 1:3–4; 10:10; 14:6).
Death is the consequence of sin, a fact made painfully clear by the law (Ezekiel 18:20). The law, then, reveals that we deserve death and judgment: “Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them” (Romans 1:32, ESV). The power of sin is magnified by the law in that the presence of sin reminds us that we cannot obey the law.
The beauty of Paul’s message is that it does not end with the law, sin, and death. No, it ends with Christ, who is the “end of the law” (Romans 10:4, ESV). His sacrificial death and victorious resurrection are the solution to our sin problem. When we sinned, He could have remained in heaven and said, “That’s not my problem.” But His love for us was too great. In love, “he humbled himself to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8, ESV). On the cross, He bore our sins, not His own. He died, but He did not remain dead. Three days later, He rose from the grave, defeating Satan, sin, and death. In Christ, believers are victorious. So, death, where is your sting?

Deur te sê “die angel van die dood is sonde”, vergelyk Paulus die dood met ‘n lewende monsterlikheid op die aanval. Sy vergiftigde wapen—sy angel—is wat die dood sy giftige mag oor mense gee. Fisiese dood is die beëindiging van ons biologiese bestaan, terwyl geestelike dood skeiding is van God, wat alleen die ware bron van lewe is (Johannes 1:3–4; 10:10; 14:6).

Die skoonheid van Paulus se boodskap is dat dit nie eindig met die wet, sonde en dood nie. Nee, dit eindig met Christus, wat die “einde van die wet” is (Romeine 10:4, ESV). Sy offerdood en oorwinnende opstanding is die oplossing vir ons sondeprobleem. Toe ons gesondig het, kon Hy in die hemel gebly het en gesê het: “Dis nie my probleem nie.” Maar Sy liefde vir ons was te groot. In liefde, “het hy homself verneder tot die dood toe, ja, die dood aan die kruis” (Filippense 2:8, ESV). Aan die kruis het Hy ons sondes gedra, nie sy eie nie. Hy het gesterf, maar Hy het nie dood gebly nie. Drie dae later het Hy uit die graf opgestaan en Satan, sonde en dood verslaan. In Christus is gelowiges oorwinnaars. So, dood, waar is jou angel?

BELIEVE IT OR NOT
I often her the phrase, “whether you believe it or not.” Today I just want to remind us of a few “Believe it or not” facts in the Bible.
There is a God up above. “You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.” (Deuteronomy 4:35) In fact, according to Psalm 53:1 only a fool will say that there is no God.
We’re all sinners in need of a Saviour. Romans 3:23 states “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This is emphasized in 1 John 1:8 and 10 which states, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
God sent His only begotten Son, to free us from the bondages of sin and give us eternal life. John 3:16 says that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
God will forgive us our sin and trespasses. In1 John 1:9 we read, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Jesus will return. Jesus said, “I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” (See John 14:3-4 – NIV)
There will be day of reckoning. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10)
And, whether we believe it or not, there is a hell. Jesus said, “Don’t fear those who kill the body, rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28) Jesus also spoke of hell when He said, “ If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched.” (See Mark 9:43-48)
Therefore, whether we believe it or not, Jesus died so that we can have life and life everlasting. And since He is coming back, let us be ready to meet our Maker.

Ek hoor dikwels die frase, “Of jy dit glo of nie.” Vandag wil ek ons herinner aan ‘n paar “Glo dit of nie” feite in die Bybel.
Daar is ‘n God daarbo. “Dit is aan julle gewys sodat julle kan weet dat die Here God is; behalwe hom is daar geen ander nie.” (Deuteronomium 4:35) Trouens, volgens Psalm 53:1 sal net ‘n dwaas sê dat daar geen God is nie.
Ons is almal sondaars wat ‘n Verlosser nodig het. Romeine 3:23 sê “Want almal het gesondig en dit ontbreek hulle aan die heerlikheid van God.” Dit word beklemtoon in 1 Johannes 1:8 en 10 wat sê: “As ons sê dat ons geen sonde het nie, mislei ons onsself, en die waarheid is nie in ons nie. As ons sê dat ons nie gesondig het nie, maak ons hom tot ‘n leuenaar, en sy woord is nie in ons nie.”
God het sy eniggebore Seun gestuur om ons te bevry van die slawerny van sonde en ons die ewige lewe te gee. Johannes 3:16 sê dat God die wêreld so liefgehad het dat Hy sy enigste Seun gegee het, sodat elkeen wat in Hom glo, nie verlore sal gaan nie maar die ewige lewe sal hê.
God sal ons, ons sondes en oortredings vergewe. In 1 Johannes 1:9 lees ons: “As ons ons sondes bely, Hy is getrou en regverdig om ons ons sondes te vergewe en ons van alle ongeregtigheid te reinig.”
Jesus kom terug. Jesus het gesê: “En as Ek gegaan en vir julle plek berei het, kom Ek weer en sal julle na My toe neem, sodat julle ook kan wees waar Ek is. En waar Ek heengaan, weet julle en die weg ken julle. (Sien Johannes 14:3-4)
Daar sal dag van afrekening wees. “Want ons moet almal voor die regterstoel van Christus verskyn, sodat elkeen kan ontvang wat hy deur die liggaam verrig het, volgens wat hy gedoen het, of dit goed is of kwaad.” (2 Korinthiërs 5:10)
En, of ons dit glo of nie, daar is ‘n hel. Jesus het gesê: ” En moenie vrees vir die wat die liggaam doodmaak, maar die siel nie kan doodmaak nie; maar vrees Hom liewer wat die siel sowel as die liggaam kan verderwe in die hel.” (Matteus 10:28). Jesus het ook van die hel gepraat toe Hy gesê het: “As jou hand jou laat struikel, kap dit af. Dit is beter vir jou om die lewe vermink in te gaan as met twee hande om die hel in te gaan, waar die vuur nooit uitgaan nie. En as jou voet jou laat struikel, kap dit af. Dit is beter vir jou om kreupel in die lewe in te gaan as om twee voete te hê en in die hel gewerp te word. En as jou oog jou laat struikel, ruk dit uit. Dit is beter vir jou om met een oog in die koninkryk van God in te gaan as om twee oë te hê en in die hel gewerp te word, waar die wurms wat dit eet, nie sterf en die vuur nie uitgeblus word nie.” (Sien Markus 9:43-48)
Of ons dit glo of nie, Jesus het gesterf sodat ons lewe en ewige lewe kan hê. En aangesien Hy terugkom, laat ons gereed wees om ons Maker te ontmoet.

“Hamas must have no role” in post-war Gaza, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio tells Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during visit to Saudi kingdom.
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday evening, where he met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the oil-rich Sunni kingdom’s de facto ruler.
The two held a closed-door meeting, with President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor Mike Waltz also attending.
During the summit, the three reviewed “various aspects of Saudi-US relations and explored opportunities to further strengthen cooperation,” the Saudi foreign ministry said after the meeting, providing few details.
Rubio, Waltz, and the Crown Prince also discussed “regional and international developments and exchanged views and efforts aimed at achieving security and stability.”
In a statement released Monday night, State Department Spokeswoman Tammy Bruce elaborated that Waltz, Rubio, and bin Salman discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine, threats to international shipping in the Red Sea from Houthi forces in Yemen, and the ongoing unrest in Syria.
In addition, they spoke about the future of the Gaza Strip, its post-war governance, and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the war-torn coastal enclave.
“The Secretary thanked the Crown Prince for once again hosting the United States in talks to help resolve the Ukraine war and secure a lasting peace,” Bruce said.
Following Rubio’s visit, bin Salman hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for talks on the war with Russia.

The second annual memorial concert honoring the victims killed at the Nova music festival in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, will take place in June, and US President Donald Trump has been invited to attend.
The Tribe of Nova community announced on Tuesday details about the “Nova Healing Concert” scheduled for June 26 at Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park.
Former hostage Mia Schem, who was abducted by Hamas terrorists at the site of the music festival, addressed the media in Israel on Tuesday to talk about the upcoming concert while also sharing a message with Trump.
“Thank you, President Trump, for everything you’re doing to release the hostages,” she said. “I invite you to dance with us in Yarkon Park and celebrate the moment when everyone finally returns home.”
“My vision, and that of everyone’s, is that this year should be different,” Schem added. “A year when we won’t have to shout but embrace. Let’s dance not just for them but with them. This is the strength of our community – it heals, it strengthens, it is our home.”
The setlist for the concert includes Benaia Barabi, Berry Sakharof, Mosh Ben-Ari, Sasi and Rita.
The event on June 26 will also feature activities such as therapeutic workshops and spaces for dealing with trauma.
Tickets are open and available to the general public, and admission is free for survivors of the Oct. 7 massacre and members of the bereaved families.
All profits from ticket sales and event sponsorships will be used by the Nova Tribe Community Association to support the physical and mental healing of Oct. 7 survivors and members of their families, as well as commemoration for those murdered during the Hamas terrorist attack.
Last year’s memorial concert was attended by tens of thousands of young people, according to Ynet.

News from Syria – The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 745 civilians, 125 government security force members and 148 militants from armed groups affiliated with the Assad regime had been killed.
Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has dismissed Israel’s criticism of mass killings blamed on his regime as “nonsense,” Reuters reported on Monday.
“They are the last ones who can talk,” Al-Sharaa, the country’s de facto leader, also known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani, charged in a wide-ranging interview with the news agency.
According to Reuters, Al-Sharaa accused the Jewish state of killing “tens of thousands of people” during its wars against Iranian-backed terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon over the past 18 months.
The massacres taking place in Syria have reignited concerns over the Sunni Islamist government that overthrew Bashar Assad in December. More than a thousand people have been killed in the coastal provinces of Tartus and Latakia, with some 700 civilians executed at close range.
Al-Sharaa’s government has denied responsibility for the killings, calling the accusations “undocumented.” Local human rights groups have also reported Assad loyalists killing members of Al-Sharaa’s security forces.

Netanyahu reportedly reassures Israeli cabinet that the White House has agreed to coordinate special envoy Adam Boehler’s Hamas negotiations with Israel, after a senior Israeli minister blasted the talks.
The Trump administration has agreed to coordinate its efforts to secure the release of American hostages held in the Gaza Strip with Israel in an attempt to defuse tensions between Washington and Jerusalem that erupted last week, after it was revealed that an American envoy had secretly initiated direct talks with Hamas.
Last week, two anonymous sources revealed to Axios that President Donald Trump’s special envoy for the hostages, Adam Boehler, had opened a direct channel for talks with Hamas, with the goal of securing the release of the five American hostages still held in the Gaza Strip, including one captive believed to still be alive.
Israeli officials, who had not been informed of the talks, responded with outrage, privately chastising Boehler over the talks.
