The father of lies

Speaking to a group of Jews, Jesus says, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).

Satan is the “father of lies” in that he is the original liar. He is the “father” of lies in the same way that Martin Luther is the “father” of the Reformation and Robert Goddard is the “father” of modern rocketry. Satan told the first lie in recorded history to Eve, in the Garden of Eden. After planting seeds of doubt in Eve’s mind with a question (Genesis 3:1), he directly contradicts God’s Word by telling her, “You will not certainly die” (Genesis 3:4). With that lie, Satan led Eve to her death; Adam followed, and so have we all.

Lying is Satan’s primary weapon against God’s children. He uses the tactic of deceit to separate people from their heavenly Father. Some of his more common lies are “there is no God,” “God doesn’t care about you,” “the Bible cannot be trusted,” and “your good works will get you into heaven.” The apostle Paul tells us that Satan “masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14), so that what he says and does sounds good and seems reasonable. But it is nothing more than a false appearance.

Many of Satan’s lies tend to perpetuate themselves. This is what happened when Eve convinced Adam to also believe the devil’s lie. Today, Satan still uses people to spread his lies for him. Often, he uses charismatic but foolish people to further his falsehoods, as in the case of false religions and cults.

The Bible has many names for Satan to describe his true nature, including “ruler of this world” (John 12:31), “god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4), “tempter” (1 Thessalonians 3:5), “deceiver” (Revelation 12:9), “Beelzebub” (literally, “lord of the flies,” the ruler of demons, in Matthew 10:25), and “Belial,” meaning “wicked” (2 Corinthians 6:15).

Satan has told more lies to more people (and even angels) than any other being ever created. His success depends on people believing his lies. He has used everything from “little white lies” to huge, pants-on-fire whoppers to deceive folks. Adolph Hitler, a man who learned how to lie effectively, once said, “If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.”

Whether a lie is small or large is not really the issue. Lies are of the devil. The Bible teaches that all liars “will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death” (Revelation 21:8). Warnings are never pleasant, but they are better than ignorance of danger; the Bible faithfully warns sinners of danger, including the danger of lying. Proverbs 19:9 also teaches that liars will be punished.

Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6), and He will never deceive you. Thankfully, Jesus is also the Savior, and His death and resurrection provide the basis for your forgiveness of all sin, including the sin of lying. Come to Jesus in faith and humility, and you will find that “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

Leuens is Satan se primêre wapen teen God se kinders.

Bible Teaching of the Day

The god of this world

The phrase god of this world (or god of this age) indicates that Satan is the major influence on the ideals, opinions, goals, and views of the majority of people. His influence encompasses the world’s philosophies, education, and commerce. When people live as if there is no God, they by default follow the god of this world. The unholy thoughts, destructive ideas, wild speculations, and false religions of this world have sprung from Satan’s lies and deceptions.

Satan is also called the “prince of the power of the air” in Ephesians 2:2. He is the “ruler of this world” in John 12:31. These titles and many more signify Satan’s capabilities. He wields a certain amount of authority and power in this world. He is not a king, but a prince, a ruler of some sort. In some way he rules over the world and the people in it: “The whole world is under the control of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).

This is not to say that Satan rules the world completely; God is still sovereign. Satan is not God—capital G—he is a god—small g. God, in His infinite, inscrutable wisdom, has allowed Satan to operate in this world within the boundaries God has set for him. Satan’s limits are clearly seen in Job 1 and 2. There, Satan must give an account of himself to God, and it seems he must have God’s permission to carry out his plans. At no time can Satan do all he wants, for God restricts his actions.

Satan may be the god of this world, but his domain is limited to unbelievers. Born-again children of God are no longer under the rule of Satan. God the Father “has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves” (Colossians 1:13). The apostle Paul was sent by God to turn people “from the power of Satan to God” (Acts 26:18). Unbelievers, however free they may think they are, are caught “in the snare of the devil” (2 Timothy 2:26) and lie in the “power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).

As the god of this world, Satan exercises his power over the unbelieving world to keep them from Jesus. Second Corinthians 4:4 indicates that he is responsible for the spiritual blindness of people without Christ: “The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.” Satan snatches the gospel from people’s hearts (Matthew 13:19). He promotes false philosophies and “doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1, NKJV). Satan’s philosophies are the fortresses in which people are imprisoned, and they must be set free by Christ.

As the god of this world, Satan has spread his lies far and wide. Many of his lies have been successful in taking root and deceiving millions. Here are a few of his more popular ones:

  • “God doesn’t exist”
  • “God doesn’t care”
  • “God cannot be trusted”
  • “God is evil”
  • “Jesus did not rise again”
  • “You can go to heaven if you’re good enough” and many more ……..

As the god of this world, Satan puts forward his agenda, and the unbelievers in the world follow. Thankfully, our Lord is greater than the god of this world, as He proved every time He cast out a demon (e.g., Mark 1:39). Jesus came “to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness” (Isaiah 42:7). The god of this world is no match for Him (John 12:31).

  • “God is boos”

Today’s Devotional

Resist the devil !!!

The phrase “resist the devil” is found in James 4:7 where the apostle James exhorts believers to resist the devil in order to cause him to flee or “run away” from us. To resist means to withstand, strive against, or oppose in some manner. Resistance can be a defensive maneuver on our part, such as resisting or withstanding the temptation to sin. Or it can be an action we take to use the only offensive weapon in the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:13-18), the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. Using the Scriptures to expose Satan’s lies and temptations is the most effective way to strive against and defeat them.

It is important to read the whole verse: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Resisting the devil must be accompanied by submitting to God. A disobedient or unsubmissive believer will not see victory.

The apostle John records Jesus saying about Satan, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). As Christians, we have full life when we are aware of the reality of the presence of evil. As we struggle to stand firm in our faith, we must realize that the enemies we are up against are not merely human ideas, but real forces that come from the powers of darkness. The Bible says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

Why will resistance cause the devil to flee? Because he knows he cannot have victory over us if we are prepared to do battle against him. As mentioned before, the Bible assures us that we need only put on the full armor of God to be fully protected from evil and to actively resist it. There is nothing more frightening to Satan than a believer who is fully equipped with spiritual armor, beginning with the “helmet of salvation,” which protects our minds, and the “breastplate of righteousness,” which protects our hearts because it is the righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Only a true believer wears these because only those who have received God’s forgiveness by grace through faith have eternal salvation and the righteousness of Christ imputed to them.

Once fitted with the helmet and breastplate (literally, “chest protector”), we are then to take up other defensive weapons with which to battle Satan: truth, the readiness to proclaim the gospel, and the faith that shields us from all the flaming arrows of the evil one. The final piece of armor is prayer. We pray for strength to resist evil and to actively battle against it. We pray for wisdom in the conflict, and most of all, we remain steadfast in our prayers, both for the ability to resist the devil and also for other believers who struggle in the same battle. When the church, the body of Christ, stands united against evil, fully equipped with the armor of God, we present a formidable foe to the evil one and we will see God get the glory for the victory.

As a side note, the Bible never gives Christians the authority to “rebuke” the devil, only to resist him. Zechariah 3:2 tells us that it is the Lord who rebukes Satan. Even Michael, one of the most powerful of the angels, did not dare to accuse Satan, but rather said, “The Lord rebuke you” (Jude 1:9). In response to Satan’s attacks, Christians should redouble our efforts to clothe ourselves in the spiritual armor, wield the Word of God, and rely on His power through prayer. Instead of focusing on “rebuking” the devil, we should focus on resisting him with the full armor of God.

Bible Prophecy in the News

Senior European officials called for calm, while U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran not to attack U.S. military assets in the region.

World leaders reacted to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran on Sunday after Iranian strikes on Israel killed at least 10 civilians overnight.

President Donald Trump distanced his administration from the Israeli attack on Iranian infrastructure, stressing that Washington was still open to a nuclear deal with Tehran.

“The U.S. had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” he continued.

“However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel and end this bloody conflict!!!” he added.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy wrote on X that the UK was “alarmed” by Iran’s overnight strikes on Israel, adding that “we must urgently de-escalate & prevent any further harm to civilians.”

Lammy added that he had spoken with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi “to urge calm”.

“Iran’s nuclear program threatens not only Israel, but also Saudi Arabia and the broader stability of the region. The countries here share a clear goal: to prevent nuclear proliferation. Germany is firmly committed to de-escalation,” German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul wrote on X.

In a conversation with his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Wadephul said that Germany believes that the risk of “further escalation” in the region “is real.”

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X that French “diplomatic facilities and nationals in Iran and the wider region [should] not be targeted under any circumstances.”

Macron added that he “urged the utmost restraint to avoid escalation” in conversation with Araghchi.

“Iran’s nuclear program is a serious concern and must be resolved through negotiation,” Macron wrote.

Is it a Episode of STAR WARS? ISRAEL’S ENEMIES CAN’T BELIEVE ISRAEL’S NEW LASER DEFENSE SYSTEM IS REAL

Gog and Magog Update

Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Herzog visited the devastation in the coastal town, as Israeli fighter jets and bombers took advantage of their aerial superiority.

There was another day of tension and drama on Sunday, as Israeli forces both in the skies above Iran and intelligence agents on the ground, continued to inflict damage on the Islamic regime.

Both Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz had promised the Islamic Republic was in for a painful day, following the direct hit on Saturday night of a Bat Yam apartment block.

Seven people were killed, including a family of five who had reportedly escaped from Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.

Other residential blocks in the immediate vicinity were also destroyed, with several buildings being marked for being torn down following the impact.

The building of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence was targeted, according to the London-based Iran International TV channel.

Locals reported explosions close to the Iran Air Force area in Tehran’s east and Imam Khomeini International Airport at Vahnabad.

The Iranian news agency ISNA reported at the same time that Ali Baaqawi, a nuclear scientist from the northern Iranian city of Mazandaran, was killed in a targeted strike, according to the Israeli Ynet news site.

In addition to the Israel Air Force taking full advantage of its dominance of the seemingly uncontested skies, which included attacking the country’s oil infrastructure in retaliation for the catastrophic attack in Bat Yam.

There were several reports of car bombings and even masked men shooting at targets.

Speculation has been rife that these operatives were Israel’s Mossad intrelligence agents roaming Tehran’s streets to take out high-value targets.

An Israeli military official said that a long list of Iranian targets remains untouched.

Since June 13, the Israeli military has conducted approximately 170 airstrikes, striking more than 720 sites across Iran, according to Iran International.

Netanyahu said, “We will hit every target belonging to the Ayatollah’s regime.”

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summary

Summary of the Book of 2 John
Author:
The Book of 2 John does not directly name its author. The tradition from the
earliest days of the church states that the author was the apostle John. There have been
various conjectures over the years that another disciple of Christ named John may have
been responsible for this letter. However, all the evidence points to the author as John
the beloved disciple who also wrote the Gospel of John.
Date of Writing: The Book of 2 John would most likely have been written at about the
same time as John’s other letters, 1 and 3 John, between A.D. 85-95.
Purpose of Writing: The Book of 2 John is an urgent plea that the readers of John’s
letter should show their love for God and His Son, Jesus, by obeying the commandment
to love each other and live their lives in obedience to the Scriptures. The Book of 2 John
is also a strong warning to be on the lookout for deceivers who were going about
denying the Incarnation, saying that Christ had not actually come in the flesh.
Key Verses:
2 John 6: “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have
heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.”
2 John 8-9: “Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you
may be rewarded fully. Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching
of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and
the Son.”
Brief Summary: The Book of 2 John is addressed to “the chosen lady and her children.”
This could either have been a lady of important standing in the church or a code which
refers to the local church and its congregation. In those days when Christians were
being persecuted such coded salutations were often used.
The Book of 2 John is largely concerned with an urgent warning concerning deceivers
who were not teaching the exact doctrine of Christ and who maintained that Jesus did
not actually come in the flesh. Such a teaching denies Jesus’ humanity. John is very
anxious that true believers should be aware of these false teachers and have nothing to
do with them.
Connections: John describes love not as an emotion or feeling, but as obedience to the
commandments of God. Jesus reiterated the importance of the commandments,
especially the “first and greatest commandment,” love for God (Deuteronomy 6:5), and
the second, love for one another (Matthew 22:37-40; Leviticus 19:18). Far from
abolishing the Old Testament law of God, Jesus came to fulfill it by providing the means
of its fulfillment in Himself.
Practical Application: It is extremely important that we check everything we see, hear,
and read that claims to be “Christian” with the Scriptures. This cannot be too strongly
emphasized because one of Satan’s greatest weapons is deceit. It is very easy to be
taken in by a new and exciting doctrine that appears to be based on Scripture but
which, if examined closely, is in fact a departure from the Word of God. If what appears
to be happening does not line up explicitly with Scripture, then this is false and not of
the Spirit, and we should have nothing to do with it.

Inleiding tot die Bybel – Bybel Samevatting

Opsomming van die Boek van 2
Johannes
Skrywer:
Daar was
vir hierdie brief moontlik verantwoordelik was.
In daardie dae toe Christene vervolg is,
is sulke gekodeerde begroetings dikwels gebruik.
So ‘n lering ontken Jesus
