Bible Teaching of the Day
The definition of worship.
In the Bible, the Hebrew word translated as “worship” is shachah and literally denotes the act of bowing down. The Greek word proskuneō, rendered as “worship,” means “to encounter God and praise Him.” Both terms seem to define worship as an activity or an action. However, an accurate depiction of biblical worship extends beyond mere activity. A better, more comprehensive definition of worship can be summarized in this statement: “Worship is the reverential response of creation to the all-encompassing magnificence of God” (McCaulley, E., “Worship,” Lexham Theological Wordbook, ed. Douglas Mangum et al., Lexham Press, 2014).
In his book Real Worship, Warren Wiersbe submits this definition of worship: “Worship is the believer’s response of all that he is—mind, emotions, will, and body—to all that God is and says and does. . . . It is a loving response that is balanced by the fear of the Lord, and it is a deepening response as the believer comes to know God better” (Wiersbe, W., Real Worship, Oliver Nelson, 1986, p. 27).
Worship is the ultimate purpose for which humans were created. God said, “I have made them for my glory” (Isaiah 43:7, NLT; see also Psalm 29:1–2; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Ephesians 1:3–6; Philippians 2:9–11). Worship is the believer’s way of life (1 Corinthians 10:31; Colossians 3:17). Everything we say and do should be an act of worship before God.
Worship cannot be defined solely by physical observances because true biblical worship is centered on God and His unparalleled greatness. It’s not attending a church service, singing, playing an instrument, lifting hands in praise, and bowing down. These acts are all elements of worship (Psalm 95:2–3; Acts 13:2; Hebrews 13:15; 1 Corinthians 11–14; Ephesians 5:19–20; 1 Timothy 4:13) but not the totality of it. They can also be evidence of worship, but authentic worship reaches beyond outward demonstrations or corporal performances into myriad expressions of the human heart replying to God’s revelation of Himself, His purposes, and His will. Worship originates with an inward posture of the heart that is always bowed down in humble, awe-filled recognition of God’s worthiness, honoring and revering Him at all times as the supreme authority over one’s life (Psalm 51:17; 95:6; Revelation 4:11).
Jesus told the Pharisees and scribes they were like the people in Isaiah’s day who honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him (Matthew 15:7–9; cf. Isaiah 29:13). According to Jesus, such worship was a farce. True worship can only come from a heart that has been redeemed and in right relationship with God. We must be born again and filled with the Holy Spirit before we can know God and respond to Him “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23; see also Isaiah 59:2; Hosea 6:6; 1 Corinthians 2:11; 2 Timothy 3:5).
Worshiping God in spirit and truth involves loving Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27). The apostle Paul’s definition of worship reflected this all-encompassing devotion of one’s life to God: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (Romans 12:1).
True worship is God-focused. He is the only appropriate object of our worship. To worship anything or anyone else is idolatry (Exodus 20:3; Deuteronomy 5:7; 1 Chronicles 16:25; Isaiah 2:8). Genuine, God-centered worship exalts the Lord only; it is offered for His pleasure alone because He alone is worthy (Exodus 34:14; 1 Chronicles 16:25–19; Psalm 86:9–10).
A simplified definition of worship can be stated as a continual heart attitude of bowing down in reverence and humility before the supreme Lord and Creator of the universe. Worship is the heartbeat of the believer’s existence, a lifelong celebration of the worthiness of God. To worship is to respond with one’s whole being in adoration, exaltation, humble submission, and obedience to God (John 4:24; Mark 12:30).
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.”
(Psalm 95:6–7, ESV)
Albei terme definieer blykbaar aanbidding as ‘n aktiwiteit of ‘n aksie. ’n Akkurate uitbeelding van Bybelse aanbidding strek egter verder as blote aktiwiteit.
Jesaja 29:13). Volgens Jesus was sulke aanbidding ‘n klug.
Ware aanbidding is God-gefokus.
“Ag kom, laat ons aanbid en neerbuig;
(Psalm 95:6–7)

Today’s Devotional
” WHEN THE ROLL IS READ “
In 1893, Reverend James Black invited a poor fourteen-year-old girl to his Sunday school. The girl attended Sunday school regularly and became actively involved. At their dedication service, the young people were to respond by quoting a Bible verse when their name was called. The Reverend called the girl’s name, but there was no response. Reverend Black then took the opportunity to talk about how sad it would be if someone’s name was read on the day of the opening of the Book of Life and the person was not there.
After the service, Reverend Black went to see the girl and found her very sick with pneumonia. On his return home, Reverend Black’s wife encouraged him to write a song about his experience, and the song “When the roll” was born. The lyrics of verse one, in Afrikaans, read as follows:
When this trumpet sounds and time strikes its last blow
and the heavenly morning breaks forever.
When the multitude of the saved gathers to stand before the throne
and the scroll is read, I am there!
I have been tossing and turning for a few nights now, struggling with the question of whether it will be enough to just be there when the scroll is read. I keep asking myself if there is more than just getting to Heaven. Then the Lord reminded me of the five crowns or rewards that we can receive in Heaven and what can be done to receive them. The five crowns are:
- The Crown of Life. “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer. Behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10) Although all believers may receive this crown, it is especially intended for those who have endured great pain, suffering, and martyrdom, even unto death, for Christ’s sake.
- The Crown of Righteousness – “There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:8) This crown is obtained by the righteousness of Jesus Christ, and not by our own works. The crown of righteousness is given to those who desire to be in Christ, who have received Christ, and who live wholly dependent upon Christ.
- The Overcomers or Infading (Incorruptible) Crown – “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? Run so that ye may obtain it. And every one that competeth in a contest doth exercise himself in all things: they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-25) This crown is earned by those who are solely focused on finishing the race in Christ. They are not only spiritually focused, but also lead disciplined and holy lives, dedicated to serving the Lord.
- The Crown of Glory – “And when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive the unfading crown of glory.” (1 Peter 5:4) At first glance it may seem as if this crown is intended for shepherds (Pastors, ministers, and such) but it can be earned by all who have taken it upon themselves to lead and care for others to the Lord. The crown of glory also refers to the light of God, which shines brightly on those who have committed themselves and their way of life to honoring God by building up (illuminating) others around them.
- The Crown of Joy – “Who else is our hope and joy, the crown of our boasting when we appear before the Lord Jesus at his coming?” (1 Thessalonians 2:19) “And God will wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, neither will there be any more mourning, nor crying, nor pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) Being in the presence of Almighty God will result in our joy being complete, for His joy will be in us and through us as we magnify and glorify His Holy Name.
Therefore, let us not be content to just be there when the scroll is finished, but let us aim (and live) to receive our rewards (gifts or crowns) when we meet at Jesus’ feet
Vandag se Bemoediging
“AS DIE ROL DAAR AFGELEES WORD”
