There is Power in the Name of Jesus

Any power attributed to the name of Jesus originates in the Person of Jesus. When we “believe in Jesus’ name,” we are trusting in the finished work of the risen Christ on the cross (1 John 5:13). Jesus is not a magic word. There is nothing special about the arrangement of the letters in His name. Had Jesus not been God in the flesh who lived a perfect life, died for the sins of all who would believe, and rose again, we wouldn’t even be talking about His name. Any power that Christians access in Jesus’ name comes from true faith in who Jesus is and what He does for sinners.

There is no magical power in the name of Jesus—there is only power in Jesus Christ, Himself. By simply calling out the name of “Jesus,” one cannot expect a special power, outcome, or better standing with God. The name of Jesus is precious, however, and brimming with meaning. From Pastor Kevin DeYoung: “What about Jesus? ‘And you shall call his name Jesus,’ the angel told Joseph, ‘for he will save his people from their sins’ (Matt. 1:21). More than a great teacher, more than an enlightened man, more than a worker of miracles, more than a source of meaning in life, more than a self-help guru, more than a self-esteem builder, more than a political liberator, more than a caring friend, more than a transformer of cultures, more than a purpose for the purposeless, Jesus is the Savior of sinners.”

The saving, healing, protecting, justifying, redeeming power of God resides in the Person of Christ, and Jesus is His name. And how did the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent Creator of the universe choose to wield His power? Through His Son, born in humble circumstances—a baby with all the power of the King (Luke 2:11–12). Jesus laid down His life to save sinners, and He exercised His authority to raise it up again (John 10:18) so that any who call on His name in faith can receive forgiveness of sins and salvation for all eternity (Romans 10:13). That is the resurrection power of the Savior—He alone is the force behind His name.

It is in Jesus’ name that God instructs us to pray (John 16:23–24). Believers are invited to pray in Jesus’ name with an expectation that God answers prayers (John 14:13–14). Praying in Jesus’ name means praying with His authority (Luke 10:19) and asking God the Father to act upon our prayers because we come by faith in the name of His Son, Jesus. Praying in Jesus’ name means praying in line with Jesus’ character and His will. Praying in Jesus’ name demonstrates our faith in God’s power to act when we believe that Jesus’ name is more than just a grouping of letters but a representation of who He actually is.

Jesus was a very common name in first-century Israel. The only thing that sets apart the name of Jesus of Nazareth is the Person it belongs to and what He did for us. In Christ “all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9). Jesus is “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being” (Hebrews 1:3). But where there is no faith, no relationship, or no submission to His lordship, the name Jesus is nothing but a word.

We are wise to guard ourselves from the temptation to misuse the name of Jesus. The Bible tells the intriguing story of a group of seven Jews in Ephesus who attempted to cast out demons using the name of Jesus. These men did not know Jesus. They were not believers. Instead they sought the admiration of others and an opportunity to make names for themselves. They had not submitted to God and thus failed to cause the spirits to flee (James 4:7). Once, a demon mocked the seven exorcists, who were essentially trying to perform magic tricks using “Jesus” as their incantation of choice: “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” the evil spirit taunted. Then the evil spirit empowered the man it possessed to beat the would-be magicians until they were bloody and naked (Acts 19:13–16). These seven men attempted to misuse the power in the name of Jesus for their own gain, but we serve a God who will not be manipulated and cannot be fooled (Job 12:16).

The name of Jesus, the one who saves His people from their sins, denotes all the power of the mighty Creator Himself. Jesus gives believers the authority to serve, work, and pray in His name when we do so believing in Jesus’ saving power and desiring God’s will. Jesus, with the authority of the Father, exercised power to save sinners, and His name is the only name we can call on for salvation (Acts 4:12). As adopted sons and daughters into God’s family, Christians experience God’s saving grace through faith in the Person of Jesus. When we call on Him, we participate in His power and find that “the name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).

Jesus was ‘n baie algemene naam in die eerste eeu se Israel.

Bible Teaching of the Day

The painfulness of the journey of Childlessness

The Bible tells us that children are a blessing from God. Psalm 127:3–5 says, “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.” This does not mean that those without children are not blessed or that children are the only blessing of God. It simply means children are to be looked upon as a blessing, not a curse or an inconvenience.

When God created Adam and Eve, “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it’” (Genesis 1:28). After the flood, God told Noah, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth” (Genesis 9:1). Procreation is part of God’s command for humanity, and He certainly “expected” most people to have children. We also see having children as part of God’s covenant with Abraham. He told Abraham, “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you . . . and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:2–3). This was ultimately fulfilled through Jesus Christ, the Savior who is fully God and fully human—and who was born from the line of Abraham.

In the Old Testament, children were seen as a physical sign of God’s blessing. Even so, and even though most people of that time may have felt differently, infertility was not a reliable sign of God’s displeasure. Many couples in the Bible, such as Elkanah and Hannah (parents of the prophet Samuel), Abraham and Sarah (parents of Isaac), and Zechariah and Elizabeth (parents of John the Baptist), were godly men and women who for years had been infertile.

In the New Testament, children are certainly still seen as a blessing. Jesus welcomed children and taught His disciples that children exemplify many of the values of the kingdom of God. The apostle Paul gave instructions to parents and children about living well together (Ephesians 6:1–4). One of the requirements for an overseer in the church is that, if he is married with children, he must manage his own household well; if he cannot take care of his own family, he is not likely able to care for the church (1 Timothy 3:4–5). There is no question that family is highly valued by God. But the New Testament focuses more on spiritual fruitfulness and multiplication than on physical blessings. Believers in Jesus become children of God (John 1:12). It is His family primarily that we want to expand. We are to make disciples (Matthew 28:19), not just biological offspring.

Children are and always will be a blessing from God—no matter how a child becomes part of one’s life. But even though God has declared children to be a blessing from Him and procreation is part of the mandate for humanity at large, nowhere does the Bible state that every married couple must have or desire to have children. Again, infertility—at any age—is not a sign of God’s displeasure. Couples without children are in no way less valuable or important to the kingdom of God than those with children. In fact, one might make the case that couples without children are able to devote more of their energy and focus to kingdom work than those with children, much like single people (see 1 Corinthians 7:32). Married, single, with children, or without children, every child of God is an important member of His family and an integral part of the body of Christ. God’s specific will for every individual and every couple is different. For many, God’s will includes having children, whether naturally or through adoption. For others, His will does not involve having children.

For those who want children yet are unable to have them for any reason, committing the desire to God in prayer is best. He can help you walk through the painfulness of the journey and also help you live out His best in this season. For those who do not desire to have children, committing the desire to God in prayer is also best. Sometimes our lack of desire is God-given. Other times, it is driven by past hurts, fear, or selfishness. When we expose our hearts honestly before God, He can help us sort out the mess, bring healing, and give us the desires of His heart.

It is all too easy for our desires for our own lives to become idols. Even good desires, when they take the place of God in our lives, become idols. All of us, no matter our life situation or stage, do well to examine our hearts, be honest with God in prayer, search His Word for wisdom, and commit our lives to Him. Ultimately, it is God who satisfies our hearts, and our lives are to be lived for His glory alone (Romans 12:1–2; Psalm 37).

Today’s Devotional

a Glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish

In a discussion about marriage using Christ and the church as a metaphor, Paul writes of Christ’s sacrifice in Ephesians 5:25. He then explains the purpose of Christ’s death on behalf of the church: “‭‭He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault” (verse 27, ‭NLT‬‬).

‬‬‬ Ephesians 5:27 is part of broader instructions given to husbands, who are directed to love their wives in the same way that Christ loved the church—with a self-sacrificing love (verse 25). Paul explains that Christ’s sacrifice was intended to “make her [the church] holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word” (verse 26). Having been cleansed, the church will be “glorious . . ., without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish” (verse 26, NLT).

When Scripture states that the church should be without spot, wrinkle, or blemish, it signifies the church’s complete holiness, as the remainder of Ephesians 5:27 shows: “She will be holy and without fault” (NLT). Here, spots, wrinkles, and blemishes symbolize impurity—not a physical deformity, but a spiritual impurity caused by sin. The church is already positionally holy through Christ’s perfect sacrifice. She is presently being sanctified, progressively set apart from the power and practice of sin, and in eternity she will be freed from the presence of sin. All these transformative processes are achieved through Christ.

It is evident in Ephesians 5 that the church holds a special place in Christ’s heart. Regardless of the mishaps and imperfections of the church, Christ’s work of sanctification remains steadfast. Those who are concerned about the many issues faced by the church today should recognize that Christ continues to work, even in the chaos. He intimately knows His bride and is committed to completing the work He has started.

Christ’s sanctifying work also has implications at the individual level. As children of God, we are positionally sanctified. We are currently being transformed to become more like Jesus, and we must remember this as we engage in spiritual disciplines such as prayer and feeding on the Word. We can be confident that the Son lavishes unconditional love on His bride. Just as a devoted husband would not dream of abandoning his wife, Jesus will not forsake His bride or the promises He made to her. This assurance provides us with ample motivation to lead a holy life, knowing that God is actively working in us to conform us to His image (Philippians 2:13)

The love that Christ has for His church and His commitment to cleanse her of spots and blemishes should serve as a model for our marriages, especially for husbands. The husband loves his wife with the aim of “sanctifying” her. He should care for her, keep her best interests in mind, and be genuinely concerned about her growth in all aspects, including her spiritual well-being.

Vandag se Bemoediging

‘n Glorieryke kerk sonder vlek of rimpel of enige ander smet

Rykdom Van Die Siel:

Bedrog verslaaf ń mens terwyl eerlikheid vry maak.

Wealth of the Soul:

I often see people standing in long lines at the stores to play lottery tickets, hoping to win and be rich. Something in us makes us think that if we had more money, things would be better for us.
A man in the Bible named Agur had a different view of wealth. He asked God to grant him two requests before he died.
First, he said, “Do not let me be deceitful or lie (Proverbs 30:8). Integrity is the key to a carefree life. If we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear. Deceit enslaves a person while honesty sets a person free. Second, he said, “Do not make me poor or rich; give me only the food I need (vs 8). Contentment is the result of trusting in God as our Provider, and we should accept what He provides with gratitude. Agur said of his Creator [ He ] has set the boundaries of the earth… He protects those who take refuge in Him ( vs 4,5 ).
Integrity and contentment are riches of the soul, available to all… Our Lord gladly gives these treasures to anyone who asks for them.

Discontent makes us poor, while contentment makes us rich!

Vandag = Ester
Wie was Ester?

Women in the Bible—What Can We Learn From Them?

Today = Esther
Who was Esther? She was a Jewess who was chosen by Persian King Ahasuerus to become his queen.

What did she do? Queen Esther used her influence to prevent the genocide of her own people. She discovered that an official decree had been issued that designated a specific day on which all Jews living in the Persian Empire were to be killed. This evil scheme was the work of a man named Haman, who was the prime minister. (Esther 3:13-15; 4:1, 5) With the help of her older cousin, Mordecai, and at the risk of her life, Esther revealed the scheme to her husband, King Ahasuerus. (Esther 4:10-16; 7:1-10) Ahasuerus then allowed Esther and Mordecai to issue another decree, authorizing the Jews to defend themselves. The Jews thoroughly defeated their enemies.—Esther 8:5-11; 9:16, 17.

What can we learn from Esther? Queen Esther set an outstanding example of courage, humility, and modesty. (Psalm 31:24; Philippians 2:3) Despite her beauty and position, she sought counsel and help. When speaking with her husband, she was tactful and respectful, but bold. And at a time of great danger for the Jews, she courageously identified herself as one of them.

Iran threatens to shut Strait of Hormuz, risking global oil supply

Iran’s parliament has approved a motion to shut the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes each day, the New York Post reported Sunday.

The decision, which still awaits final approval from Iran’s Supreme Council, could significantly disrupt global energy markets and escalate tensions in the Gulf region.

Iranian state media said the Supreme Council would decide on the measure by Sunday night.

If enacted, the move would halt approximately $1 billion in daily oil shipments and is expected to send global oil prices soaring.

The proposed closure follows a series of Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure in recent days.

Speaking on state television, Revolutionary Guards Commander Esmail Kosari warned that Iran’s response “will be done whenever necessary,” signaling the closure could mark a major escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Gog and Magog Update

IDF hits 6 Iranian airbases, prevents ballistic missile attacks on Israel

Israeli aircraft bombed six Iranian airbases overnight and destroyed multiple ballistic missile launchers aimed at Israel, likely reducing the scope of Iran’s latest attack on the Jewish state.

Warning sirens sounded across much of Israel just after 3:00 a.m. on Monday after a missile launch was detected in Iran.

Only a single ballistic missile was launched, however, after Israeli warplanes destroyed multiple launchers as they prepared to fire.

No injuries or damage were reported in Israel.

A single Israeli Hermes-type unmanned aircraft was shot down over Iran, the IDF said.

According to an army spokesperson, more than 15 Israel Air Force jets carried out strikes guided by intelligence gathered by the IDF Intelligence Directorate in the Kermanshah region of Iran.

The strikes managed to destroy several surface-to-surface missile launchers and missile storage depots.

The IDF continues to intensify its attacks on the military capabilities of the Iranian regime and will continue to act to maintain air superiority to safeguard the security of the State of Israel.

Israeli power station hit as Iran launches 5 missile volleys

Millions of Israelis were forced to remain in shelters for an extended period on Monday morning after Iran launched five consecutive volleys of ballistic missiles, scoring a direct hit on a key Israeli power station.

The first wave of ballistic missile launches was detected at approximately 10:15 a.m., prompting the sounding of warning sirens across northern Israel minutes later.

Three subsequent volleys were detected, targeting central and southern Israel, followed by an additional attack on northern Israel, with the fourth volley targeting southern Israel alone.

Later, at 11:35 a.m., a fifth ballistic missile attack was detected, targeting northern Israel.

Thus far, there have been no reports of injuries, though several direct hits were reported.

The Israel Electric Company confirmed that a “strategic infrastructure facility in southern Israel” suffered a direct hit during the attacks, leading to some power outages in southern Israel.

In 2 Timothy 2:15, the apostle Paul writes, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (KJV). A more modern version reads, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (NIV). This verse emphasizes the importance of studying the Word of God and interpreting it correctly.

Here are some practical steps for how we can study and show ourselves approved unto God:

  1. Prayer is essential for Bible study because it helps us to approach the Word of God with a humble and teachable spirit. When we pray before reading and studying the Bible, we are acknowledging our need for the Holy Spirit’s guidance to help us interpret and apply the Word to our lives (John 16:13).

Additionally, prayer deepens our relationship with God. As we study the Bible, we can use what we learn to inform our prayers to give praise and glory to God for who He is and what He has done for us.

  1. We should set aside a time each day to read, study, and meditate on the Word of God. This could be in the morning, afternoon, or evening. The key is to be intentional and consistent. That way, we demonstrate that knowing and learning more about God is our top priority (Psalm 1:2).

When we approach the Bible, we should ask God to speak to us through His Word. We should also be open-minded and willing to learn and be challenged by what we read. This is how we grow and mature in our understanding of spiritual things.

Regular Bible reading, studying, and meditation helps us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the content of Scripture.

  1. To interpret the Bible correctly, we should consider the literal, grammatical, historical, and synthetic contexts of the passage in question. The literal context is what the passage plainly says. The grammatical context is the immediate sentence and paragraph within which a word or phrase is found. The historical context is the events narrated, to whom the passage is addressed, and how it was understood at that time. The synthetic context involves comparing the passage being studied with other parts of Scripture.

For example, when studying the New Testament, we should consider the sociopolitical climate of the Roman Empire. We should also consider the socioreligious culture of the Jewish people. This background information can help us understand the original meaning of the text and how it applies to our lives today. In short, context is king.

  1. We should use reliable resources to help us interpret difficult passages and gain insight into the meaning of the text. These resources can include Bible commentaries, dictionaries, and concordances. We must choose resources that are based on sound biblical scholarship and align with the truth of God’s Word.

These resources should not replace the Bible as our primary source of information (John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:16). They should instead be used as a supplement to Bible reading and study.

  1. The goal of Bible study is not just to gain information but to glorify God with our thoughts, feelings, and actions: “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31; cf. Romans 12:1). We want to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only (James 1:22).

Bible study is essential for our spiritual growth and maturation. It requires consistent reading, prayer, understanding context, using reliable resources, and application. As we study the Bible, we will discover more about God and how we can better serve Him and others. It also helps us to distinguish truth from error, overcome trials, deepen our relationship with God, and become better witnesses for Christ in the world. By following these steps, we can study to show ourselves approved before God.

Kortom, konteks is koning.
