Bible Teaching of the Day

The 7 ” I AM ” Statements of Jesus.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus makes seven statements beginning with the words I am. Each of these “I am” proclamations furthers our understanding of Jesus’ ministry in the world. They also link Jesus to the Old Testament revelation of God.

In the Old Testament, God revealed His name to Moses: “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14). Thus, in Judaism, “I AM” is unquestionably understood as a name for God. Whenever Jesus made an “I am” statement in which He claimed attributes of deity, He was identifying Himself as God.

Here are the seven metaphorical “I am” statements found in John’s gospel:

“I am the bread of life” (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51). In this chapter, Jesus establishes a pattern that continues through John’s gospel—Jesus makes a statement about who He is, and He backs it up with something He does. In this case, Jesus states that He is the bread of life just after He had fed the 5,000 in the wilderness. At the same time, He contrasts what He can do with what Moses had done for their ancestors: “Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die” (verses 49–50).

“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5). This second of Jesus’ “I am” statements in John’s gospel comes right before He heals a man born blind. Jesus not only says He is the light; He proves it. Jesus’ words and actions echo Genesis 1:3, “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

“I am the door” (John 10:7 and 9, ESV). This “I am” statement stresses that no one can enter the kingdom of heaven by any other means than Christ Himself. Jesus’ words in this passage are couched in the imagery of a sheepfold. He is the one and only way to enter the fold. “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber” (verse 1, ESV).

“I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11, 14). With this “I am” statement, Jesus portrays His great love and care. He is the One who willingly protects His flock even to the point of death (verses 11 and 15). When Jesus called Himself the good shepherd, He unmistakably took for Himself one of God’s titles in the Old Testament: “The Lord is my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1).

“I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). Jesus made this “I am” statement immediately before raising Lazarus from the dead. Again, we see that Jesus’ teaching was not just empty talk; when He made a claim, He substantiated it with action. He holds “the keys of death and the grave” (Revelation 1:18, NLT). In raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus showed how He can fulfill Yahweh’s promise to ancient Israel: “[God’s] dead shall live; their bodies shall rise” (Isaiah 26:19, ESV). Apart from Jesus, there is neither resurrection nor eternal life.

“I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). This powerful “I am” statement of Christ’s is packed with meaning. Jesus is not merely one way among many ways to God; He is the only way. Scripture said that “The very essence of [God’s] words is truth” (Psalm 119:160, NLT), and here is Jesus proclaiming that He is the truth—confirming His identity as the Word of God (see John 1:1, 14). And Jesus alone is the source of life; He is the Creator and Sustainer of all life and the Giver of eternal life.

“I am the true vine” (John 15:1, 5). The final metaphorical “I am” statement in the Gospel of John emphasizes the sustaining power of Christ. We are the branches, and He is the vine. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit unless it is joined in vital union with the vine, only those who are joined to Christ and receive their power from Him produce fruit in the Christian life.

There are two more “I am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. These are not metaphors; rather, they are declarations of God’s name, as applied by Jesus to Himself. The first instance comes as Jesus responds to a complaint by the Pharisees. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus says, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58, NLT). The verbs Jesus uses are in stark contrast with each other: Abraham was, but I am. There is no doubt that the Jews understood Jesus’ claim to be the eternal God incarnate, because they took up stones to kill Him (verse 59).

The second instance of Jesus applying to Himself the name I AM comes in the Garden of Gethsemane. When the mob came to arrest Jesus, He asked them whom they sought. They said, “Jesus of Nazareth,” and Jesus replied, “I am he” (John 18:4–5). Then something strange happened: “When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground” (verse 6). Perhaps explaining the mob’s reaction is the fact that the word he has been provided by our English translators. Jesus simply said, “I am.” Applying God’s covenant name to Himself, Jesus demonstrated His power over His foes and showed that His surrender to them was entirely voluntary (see John 10:17–1819:11).

Here is my herder” (Psalm 23:1).

Today’s Devotional

THE WILL OF GOD!

Often, I have been asked about the will of God. Paging through the Bible I see Jesus saying, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21–23) On the Mount of Olives, Jesus prayed “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42) Jesus also said that when we pray, we should pray, “Let your will be done.”  (Matthew 6:10) It is therefore safe to assume that Jesus surrendered His will to the will of His Father.

In Acts 27 we read of Paul being transferred to Italy by boat. Soon a storm came up which threatened the lives of everybody on board. After facing the storm for fourteen days the sailors sensed they were approaching land. Fearing that they would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight. In an attempt to escape from the ship, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea, pretending they were lowering more anchors. Then Paul said, “Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved.” The soldiers then cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it drift away. (See Acts 27:29-32)

In short, when we want to do the will of the Father, we need to sacrifice our own will and surrender completely to the Lord. In terms of Acts 27 we must remain in the Ship (have fellowship with God) to be saved. In doing so we must be prepared to suffer or to endure the storm for a while longer without wanting to save ourselves like the sailors who wanted to use the lifeboat as a means of escape. Living in God’s will mean that we will cut the ropes and let the lifeboat drift away. This means that we will do away with our own plans or our own ways, while trusting completely in the Lord who carries our burdens, the Lord who saves us, the Lord who rescues us from death. (See Psalm 68: 19 – 20)

But then, according to Scripture how are we to know God’s will? We can know God’s will by:

  • Trusting or believing in the riches of God’s wisdom and knowledge. (Romans 11:33)
  • Studying God’s Word. (2 Timothy 3:16)
  • Allowing God’s Holy Spirit to lead you. (Galatians 5:16-18)
  • Seeking wisdom from God. (James 1:5)
  • Seeking sound advice (counsel) from other believers. (Proverbs, 24:6)
  • Waiting patiently upon the Lord. (Lamentations 3:25)

Let us examine our hearts and evaluate our motives. Let us be sincere when we pray, “Thy will be done.” Let us not have a “lifeboat” mentality or a plan B, pretending to throw out anchors by pretending we are something we are not. Let us stay on the ship, so that we may be safe and saved.

• wysheid by God te soek. (Jakobus 1:5)
• goeie raad by ander gelowiges te verkry. (Spreuke, 24:6)
• geduldig op die Here te wag. (Klaagliedere 3:25)

Signs of the Times in the News

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that more than 185 people had been EXECUTED ,

Israel’s defense minister calls new Syrian president an ‘al-Qaeda terrorist’ after mass executions.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz harshly criticized Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, following the execution of hundreds of civilians loyal to former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

Using the alias of Syria’s current president, Katz took to X to condemn the killings, stating, “Al-Julani exchanged his robe for a suit, presenting himself as moderate. But now, he has removed the mask, revealing his true identity: A jihadist terrorist aligned with al-Qaeda, responsible for horrific acts against innocent civilians.”

“Israel will take all necessary steps to defend itself from any threat originating from Syria,” he added.

Katz vowed that Israel would maintain a military presence in the buffer zone along the border.

“We will remain in the security zones and on Mount Hermon, protecting the communities of the Golan and Galilee. We will ensure that southern Syria remains demilitarized and free of threats, and we will protect the local Druze population – anyone who harms them will face our response,” Katz said.

In the past several days, Syrian government forces crushed a rebellion within Assad’s Alawite sect.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that more than 185 people had been killed — 90 of them Alawites, a sect of Assad loyalists, who were executed by the regime.

The Britain-based group reported, “Ninety Alawite civilians, including at least six women, were executed by security forces in Baniyas, Latakia, and Jableh.”

An Alawite source told Ynet that Syrian regime forces were looting homes, perpetrating violence, and arresting young people.

The source called on Israel to come to the aid of the Alawites, saying, “The Alawites are asking for Netanyahu’s immediate intervention.”

Israel is focused on protecting the Druze community in Syria and in border communities within Israel.

Last week, the Israeli government ordered the IDF to intervene militarily against Syria’s new regime and defend Syrian Druze living outside of Damascus.

“We will not allow the extremist Islamic terror regime in Syria to harm the Druze,” Katz declared. “We have instructed the IDF to prepare and deliver a strong and clear warning: if the regime harms the Druze, it will be harmed by us.”
