Bible Teaching of the Day

The Last Supper is what we call the last meal Jesus ate with His disciples before His betrayal and arrest. The Last Supper is recorded in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 26:17–30; Mark 14:12–26; Luke 22:7–30). It was more than Jesus’ last meal; it was a Passover meal, as well. One of the important moments of the Last Supper is Jesus’ command to remember what He was about to do on behalf of all mankind: shed His blood on the cross thereby paying the debt of our sins (Luke 22:19).

In addition to predicting His suffering and death for our salvation (Luke 22:15–16), Jesus also used the Last Supper to imbue the Passover with new meaning, institute the New Covenant, establish an ordinance for the church, and foretell Peter’s denial of Him (Luke 22:34) and Judas Iscariot’s betrayal (Matthew 26:21–24).

The Last Supper brought the Old Testament observance of the Passover feast to its fulfillment. Passover was an especially holy event for the Jewish people in that it commemorated the time when God spared them from the plague of physical death and brought them out of slavery in Egypt (Exodus 11:1—13:16). During the Last Supper with His apostles, Jesus took two symbols associated with Passover and imbued them with fresh meaning as a way to remember His sacrifice, which saves us from spiritual death and delivers us from spiritual bondage: “After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’ And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you’” (Luke 22:17–20).

Jesus’ words during the Last Supper about the unleavened bread and the cup echo what He had said after He fed the 5,000: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. . . . I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. . . . Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink” (John 6:35, 51, 54–55). Salvation comes through Christ and the sacrifice of His physical body on the cross.

Also during the Last Supper, Jesus taught the principles of servanthood and forgiveness as He washed His disciples’ feet: “The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves” (Luke 22:26–27; John 13:1–20).

The Last Supper today is remembered during the Lord’s Supper, or communion (1 Corinthians 11:23–33). The Bible teaches that Jesus’ death was typified in the offering of the Passover sacrifice (John 1:29). John notes that Jesus’ death resembles the Passover sacrifice in that His bones were not broken (John 19:36; cf. Exodus 12:46). And Paul said, “Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7). Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law, including the feasts of the Lord (Matthew 5:17).

Typically, the Passover meal was a family celebration. However, at the Last Supper, the apostles were alone with Jesus (Luke 22:14), which suggests that this particular meal has specific meaning for the church, of which the apostles became the foundation (Ephesians 2:20). While the Last Supper had implications for the Jews, it was designed for the church as well. Today the Lord’s Table is one of two ordinances observed by the church.

The Last Supper was rooted in the Old Covenant even as it heralded the New. Jeremiah 31:31 promised a New Covenant between God and Israel, in which God said, “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people” (Jeremiah 31:33). Jesus made a direct reference to this New Covenant during the Last Supper: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20). A new dispensation was on the horizon. In God’s grace, the New Covenant applies to more than Israel; everyone who has faith in Christ will be saved (see Ephesians 2:12–14).

The Last Supper was a significant event and proclaimed a turning point in God’s plan for the world. In comparing the crucifixion of Jesus to the feast of Passover, we can readily see the redemptive nature of Christ’s death. As symbolized by the original Passover sacrifice in the Old Testament, Christ’s death atones for the sins of His people; His blood rescues us from death and saves us from slavery. Today, the Lord’s Supper is when believers reflect upon Christ’s perfect sacrifice and know that, through our faith in receiving Him, we will be with Him forever.

Wie na My toe kom, sal nooit honger ly nie, en wie in My glo, sal nooit dors kry nie. . . . . . . Elkeen wat my vlees eet en my bloed drink, het die ewige lewe, en Ek sal hulle opwek in die laaste dag. Want my vlees is ware voedsel en my bloed is ware drank” (Johannes 6:35, 51, 54–55).

Today’s Devotional

 UNDER GOD’S CONTROL

The Lord Almighty has sworn, “Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen. (Isaiah 14:24)

Often, it appears as if God is no longer in control, as if all hell broke loose, as if satan is throwing everything he has at us. In the process we often lose hope, and faith. Still, even amid chaos, unrest or turmoil, God reigns and is in control. (See Psalm 93:1 and Revelation 19:6)

Still, we experience times of uncertainty and doubt, when it seems as if the Lord has far removed Himself from us or the circumstances, we find ourselves in. That is when faith needs to come to the fore, when we need to place our hope and trust in God, that we need to surrender ourselves to His rulership, for when God is in control, nothing can be out of control.

The apostle Paul wrote, “I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked.” (2 Corinthians 11: 23 – 27)

Still, Paul did not give up or gave in. And since he had faith in God and faith in the process, God who was in control, used Him in ways unimaginable. Paul knew that God could use the circumstances he faced to effect change in him to the benefit of himself and others.

Therefore, let us not be afraid to trust God when we’re in doubt, or when we are afraid, or when we do not know what the future holds. For even when we face lives’ trials and tribulations, we can be assured that God who is in control, will work all things for the good to those who love him. (Romans 8:28)

(Romeine 8:28)

LOSING FACE ? Trump now says he will not force Palestinians out of Gaza, reversal welcomed by Hamas.

U.S. President Donald Trump met with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the White House today.

Before the meeting, Trump seemed to contradict earlier statements when saying, “No one is expelling anyone from Gaza.”

In early February, Trump revealed a plan to relocate civilians from Gaza to allow the U.S. to begin rebuilding the Gaza Strip.

During a press conference at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on February 4, Trump stated that the United States would “take over” Gaza.

Initially, Trump suggested that Palestinians could return to Gaza. However, he revised his position on February 10, telling Fox News host Bret Baier that under his plan, Palestinians who leave the Gaza Strip would not be allowed to return, as they would be provided with “much better housing” elsewhere.

Trump has also proposed relocating Gaza’s current population to a single central location or several different sites.

Reuters reported that Hamas welcomed the apparent reversal by Trump on the call for the displacement of Gazans, urging him not to align with the agenda of the “extreme Zionist right.”

Prime Minister Martin issued a statement calling for increased aid to Gaza. He also urged a ceasefire and the return of hostages.

Relations between Israel and Ireland have been strained since October 7, with the Irish government taking a harsh stance against the Jewish state.

Ireland supported South Africa’s motion in the International Criminal Court accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.

In December, Israel closed its embassy in Ireland, citing “anti-Israel policies.”

Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, commented on the embassy closing, saying, “The actions and anti-Semitic rhetoric used by Ireland against Israel are rooted in the delegitimization and demonization of the Jewish state, along with double standards. Ireland has crossed every red line in its relations with Israel.”

The Islamization Of American Towns: New Jersey’s First Islamic City Is A Warning

A shocking transformation is unfolding in Paterson, New Jersey, where local officials are rapidly reshaping the city into an Islamic stronghold. Is it just a coincidence that a large number of talking heads in the corporate media have all suddenly decided to start blaming Donald Trump for causing a “recession”?

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summaries
A good summary/overview of the Bible is difficult to come by. The Bible consists of 2 testaments, 66 different books, 1,189 chapters, 31,173 verses and 773,692 words. The different books of the Bible cover different subjects and are addressed to different audiences. The books of the Bible were written by about 40 different men over a period of about 1,500 years. A summary/overview of the entire Bible is therefore a major undertaking.

At the same time, the Holy Spirit was the “inspiring” writer of the Bible. God “breathed out” His Word and used the prophets and apostles to write His Word down ( 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ; 2 Peter 1:21 ). Furthermore, all who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ have the Holy Spirit within them ( Romans 8:9 ; 1 Corinthians 12:13 ). The Holy Spirit wants to help us understand the Bible ( 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 ).

The purpose of our Bible summary / survey section is to provide a basic background of each book of the Bible. For each book of the Bible, the author, date of writing, purpose of writing, key verses, and a brief summary will be given. We sincerely hope that our Bible summary / survey section will help you understand the Bible better, and will encourage you to study the Bible in a more in-depth way.
Here are quick summaries of the 66 books of the Bible: we will then move on to full summaries.
