The most basic definition of prayer is “talking to God.” Prayer is not meditation or passive reflection; it is direct address to God. It is the communication of the human soul with the Lord who created the soul. Prayer is the primary way for the believer in Jesus Christ to communicate his emotions and desires with God and to fellowship with God.
Prayer can be audible or silent, private or public, formal or informal. All prayer must be offered in faith (James 1:6), in the name of the Lord Jesus (John 16:23), and in the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26). As the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia puts it, “Christian prayer in its full New Testament meaning is prayer addressed to God as Father, in the name of Christ as Mediator, and through the enabling grace of the indwelling Spirit” (“Prayer” by J. C. Lambert). The wicked have no desire to pray (Psalm 10:4), but the children of God have a natural desire to pray (Luke 11:1).
Prayer is described in the Bible as seeking God’s favor (Exodus 32:11), pouring out one’s soul to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:15), crying out to heaven (2 Chronicles 32:20), drawing near to God (Psalm 73:28, KJV), and kneeling before the Father (Ephesians 3:14).
Paul wrote, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7). Worry about nothing; pray about everything.
Everything? Yes, God wants us to talk with Him about everything. How often should we pray? The biblical answer is “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, ESV). We should keep a running conversation going with God all day long. Some find the ACTS formula of prayer helpful, but there is really no special formula for how to pray in the Bible. We should just do it. We can pray under any and all circumstances. Prayer develops our relationship with God and demonstrates our trust and utter dependence upon Him.
Prayer is the Christian’s way of communicating with God. We pray to praise God and thank Him and tell Him how much we love Him. We pray to enjoy His presence and tell Him what is going on in our lives. We pray to make requests and seek guidance and ask for wisdom. God loves this exchange with His children, just as we love the exchange we have with our children. Fellowship with God is the heart of prayer. Too often we lose sight of how simple prayer is really supposed to be.
When we make petitions to God, we let God know exactly where we stand and what we would like to see happen. In our prayers, we must admit that God is greater than we are and ultimately knows what is best in any given situation (Romans 11:33–36). God is good and asks us to trust Him. In prayer, we say, essentially, “Not my will, but your will be done.” The key to answered prayer is praying according to the will of God and in accordance with His Word. Prayer is not seeking our own will but seeking to align ourselves with the will of God more fully (1 John 5:14–15; James 4:3).
The Bible contains many examples of prayer and plenty of exhortations to pray (see Luke 18:1; Romans 12:12; and Ephesians 6:18). God’s house is to be a house of prayer (Mark 11:17), and God’s people are to be people of prayer: “Dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love” (Jude 1:20–21).

Gebed kan hoorbaar of stil wees, privaat of publiek, formeel of informeel.

Bible Teaching of the Day
When a Christian woman is looking for a husband, she should seek a man “after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). The most important relationship that any of us have is our personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. That relationship comes before all others. If our vertical relationship with the Lord is as it should be, then our horizontal relationships will reflect that reality. Therefore, a potential husband should be a man who has his focus upon walking in obedience to God’s Word and who seeks to live so that his life brings glory to God (1 Corinthians 10:31).
What are some other qualities to look for? The apostle Paul gives us the qualities we should look for in a husband in 1 Timothy chapter 3. In this passage are the qualifications for a leader in the church body. However, these qualities should grace the lives of any man who walks “after God’s heart.” The qualities can be paraphrased as follows: a man should be patient and controlled in his demeanor, not filled with pride but of sober mental attitude, able to master his emotions, given to graciousness to others, able to patiently teach, not given to drunkenness or uncontrolled use of any of God’s gifts, not prone to violence, not overly focused upon the details of life but focused upon God, not apt to be a hot-head or be thin-skinned so that he takes offense easily, and grateful for what God has given, rather than envious of what gifts others have received.
The above qualities describe a man who is actively engaged in the process of becoming a mature believer. That is the type of man a woman should look for as a potential husband. Yes, physical attraction, similar interests, complementary strengths and weaknesses, and the desire for children are things to consider. These things, though, must be secondary to the spiritual qualities a woman should look for in a man. A man you can trust, respect, and follow in the path of godliness is of far greater value than a man of good looks, fame, power, or money.
Finally, when “looking” for a husband, we must be surrendered to God’s will in our lives. Every woman wants to find her “prince charming,” but the reality is that she will probably marry a man with as many flaws as she has. Then, by God’s grace, they will spend the rest of their lives together learning how to be a partner to, and servant of, each other. We must enter into the second most-important relationship of our lives (marriage), not under an emotional cloud, but with eyes wide open. Our most important relationship, with our Lord and Savior, has to be the focus of our lives.
Dit is die tipe man waarna ‘n vrou as ‘n potensiële man moet soek.

Today’s Devotional
In the description of love in 1 Corinthians 13, we find four things that love “always” does. Love is not just an idea; it is action. The third action listed is that love “always hopes” (NIV) or “hopes all things” (ESV). It’s nice to know that love is hopeful, but what exactly does this mean?
The Greek word translated “hope” is from elpidzo, meaning “to hope or wait for salvation with joy and full confidence.” Used 32 times in the New Testament, this word expresses more than a wish or desire, but a confident belief in the unseen. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Faith, hope, and love are often intimately connected in Scripture (see 1 Corinthians 13:13).
In Colossians 1:4-5 we find the same combination of faith, hope, and love: “We heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven” (emphasis added).
Just as God is called “love” (1 John 4:8), Jesus is called our “hope” (1 Timothy 1:1). Hope not only concerns our belief in Christ but describes who He is to us. The hope within us is Christ Himself. If He lives within us, His hope will be seen in how we treat others. Living with such an attitude reflects the way of Christ, leads to holy living, and brings glory to the heavenly Father (Matthew 5:17).
Part of showing love is hoping, and part of hoping is seeing the potential of others. As Goethe said, “If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.” In love, we can always be hopeful and show confidence in others. This does not rule out confrontation or the redress of wrongs, but the impact of a positive attitude in the life of another person is incalculable.
How many times in the Old Testament did Israel fail God? Yet their failure was never final. Love never says die. Peter failed Jesus, yet the Lord restored him. The Corinthians failed Paul in some ways, yet the apostle, in love, patiently corrected them and called them “sanctified” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Love always points to a brighter day ahead. Love is the lifeline that the hurting can hold on to.
If you have ever had a person believe in you and share a hopeful attitude for your future, then you have experienced some of what 1 Corinthians 13:7 teaches. As long as there is love, there will be hope.
Tog was hul mislukking nooit finaal nie.
Solank daar liefde is, sal daar hoop wees.

INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL ARTISTS
Meet Bradley Walker

Country music is at its best when it’s anchored in tradition, rooted in faith and family values and delivered with heartfelt passion that resonates with authenticity. That’s the way Bradley Walker makes country music, and it’s that approach that makes Blessed: Hymns and Songs of Faith such an inspired and compelling collection.
His 2016 album/DVD Call Me Old-Fashioned (Gaither Music Group) hit the top ten of the Country Albums chart and established Walker as one of the finest young voices to carry the torch for traditional country music. On his sophomore Gaither Music collection, Blessed, he returns to his roots, delivering some of gospel music’s best loved classics, among them “Amazing Grace,” “Victory in Jesus,” “Because He Lives” and “I’ll Fly Away” alongside new favorites like “I Will Someday,” penned by Chris and Morgane Stapleton with Ronnie and Garnet Bowman. The 13-track album also features appearances by some of the top names in country, gospel and bluegrass, including Jimmy Fortune, The Oak Ridge Boys, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Rhonda Vincent, Charlotte Ritchie, Ricky Skaggs and The Isaacs.
“This is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” says Walker. “I’ve always said, ‘If I’m blessed to make records for any amount of time I want to do a gospel album, an album full of gospel songs I sang in church and gospel songs that I love.’ So many of my heroes–Merle Haggard, Vern Gosdin, George Jones and Conway Twitty–cut some of the greatest gospel albums of all time and I’ve always wanted to do that. Probably all of us started out singing in church. I knew it was something I wanted to do at some point, and I’m thankful to have this chance.”
Many of these songs have long been the soundtrack for Walker’s life. Growing up in Athens, Alabama, he began singing in church but soon graduated to national television when The Oak Ridge Boys invited him to sing on the “Nashville Now” show when he was only 10 years old. Getting into the music business is a challenge for any young hopeful; but for someone born with Muscular Dystrophy, who has spent his whole life in a wheelchair, it might seem especially daunting.
However, Walker has never been one to let anything deter him from his goals, and he credits the support of his parents with fueling his drive to succeed. “Somebody has to put that in you,” he says. “I’m thankful that Mama had the strength to put that in me at an early age because without that I don’t think I’d be here right now. I try to let nothing hold me back. I know it’s cost her a lot of sleepless nights a lot of times when I would get in my vehicle and drive to Nashville to go to the Station Inn to hear some good music or go to the Opry and hang out. I love it.”
Possessing both a fierce, creative spirit and a determined, practical streak, Walker got an education and went to work as a Material Analyst at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant while plotting how he would succeed in the music business. He has worked his day job while driving his custom van to Nashville to meet with songwriters, play gigs and pursue his dream of landing a deal and making it in the music industry. Along the way, he made a lot of friends and earned the respect of Nashville’s top music makers who were impressed not only by Walker’s evocative voice, but also his work ethic, playful sense of humor and easy-going charm.
One of his biggest fans was the late Joey Feek, who requested he sing at her funeral after her brave battle with cancer came to an end. It was there gospel legend Bill Gaither first heard Walker sing and was so impressed he signed him to a record deal shortly after. Call Me Old-Fashioned, his first recording with Gaither Music Group, was produced by Joey’s husband, Rory, and accompanied by a DVD filmed in the couple’s barn.
Though Walker had previously established himself in bluegrass circles while working with acclaimed producer Carl Jackson and had earned the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA’s) Male Vocalist of the Year title, Call Me Old-Fashioned broadened his fan base to the mainstream country crowd; and Blessed is sure to solidify his growing base in the gospel arena. “These are songs that mean so many different things to so many different people,” he says of the songs on Blessed. “As far as picking the songs, it came down to the songs that mean the most to me, songs that I sang in church, songs I love that have some kind of meaning behind them, to me, in one way or another. We knew we wanted to do two or three things that were maybe a little bit more obscure and put a couple new things on there too. We were just trying to find the right mix. I think we’ve done that.”
Working with producer Ben Isaacs, Walker has crafted an album that celebrates the church’s most beloved hymns, putting his own unique stamp on the classics and giving them a fresh spin. Vern Gosdin inspired his soulful take on the usually upbeat “I’ll Fly Away.” “Vern turned ‘I’ll Fly Away’ into somewhat of a ballad,” says Walker, who gave “Victory in Jesus” a bluegrassy feel and enlisted Vince Gill to join him on the evergreen “Drifting Too Far from the Shore.” “I love that song because it’s real easy out here in the world to kind of drift away from what we know is right and where we know we need to be sometimes,” Walker says. “It’s a reminder, even to myself sometimes, ‘Hey, you need to stay on the path.’ I love that song. It’s a more well-known song in the bluegrass world. Ben and I really wanted to represent my country influence and background and also my bluegrass influence on this record.”
Jimmy Fortune joins Walker on “The Old Rugged Cross.” “That is one of my favorite tracks on this record,” he smiles. “I had never sang with Jimmy before. What a sweetheart of a guy! I grew up loving the Statler Brothers, and the first time I heard our voices together it brought me to tears because it’s really, really special.”
Longtime friends The Oak Ridge Boys join Walker on “Family Bible.” “Talk about a full circle moment,” he says. “They mean so much to me. They put me on national television when I was 10 years old. They supported me and have been right there with me through all of this, so now to have them singing on my record is just so, so special. That’s something that will live forever. I can’t even really find the words to say what it really means to have those guys on this. When I won Male Vocalist of the Year at the IBMA Awards Joe Bonsall and Duane Allen were there. They have been with me and supported me through my whole life. They are just fine, fine people. They’ve meant so much to me, not just my music career but my life.”
Among the album’s newer fare is “Say Something,” a standout track written by Sonya Isaacs Yeary and Tim Menzies. “Sonya sent that song to me last year when we were looking for songs for the Old-Fashioned record,” Walker says. “I loved it then and hung onto it. That song just really speaks to me, and I think it’s a song that can speak to a lot of people because of what it says. We all come to times in our lives where we look for guidance and answers from God; and when you pray or ask Him for that guidance, you want to get an answer right away. You want to know what His will is right away. Sometimes we have to trust and wait for God’s time. The song talks about being at a place in life where you are just totally relying on God to say something.”
In addition to the album, Walker shares the songs from Blessed on a new DVD, which features musical performances as well as an insightful interview between Walker and Gaither. “A really good friend of mine told me, ‘When you make records you’d better do something that you’re going to be proud of. You’d better be proud of them because it’s the one thing that we get to do that will outlive us and will be around forever. When we’re dead and gone, when we leave this old world, these records that we get to make are still going to live on,’” Walker relates. “He said, ‘So when you pick these songs and make these records it better be something that you’re proud of,’ and I’m so proud of this.”
Blessed occupies an important space in Walker’s life and artistry. It’s the intersection of the music he loves and his faith in God. “What I love about it is the fact that it’s gospel songs, but the arrangements are just as country as they get. I love that about this record,” he says in that warm Southern drawl. “I think it’s just a good representation of me. This is a record that I have honestly laid in bed at night and thought about. I thought, ‘Man, what songs would I want to do if I ever cut a gospel album? How would I want it to sound? What would I want it to be?’ I thought about that a long time ago, and I’ve always said that when and if I ever got that opportunity to make that record, I wanted people to be able to listen to this album and get a good sense of who I am–my style, what I love musically–but also who I am as a person too. I hope that when they hear Blessed that they can hear that.”
It’s a sure bet they will. His heart and passion shine through on every track. Faith is an intricate journey and Bradley Walker will make you want to join him on the ride.

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summary
Summary of the Book of 1 John
Author: 1, 2, and 3 John have from earliest times been attributed to the apostle John,
who also wrote the Gospel of John. The content, style, and vocabulary seem to warrant
the conclusion that these three epistles were addressed to the same readers as the
Gospel of John.
Date of Writing: The Book of 1 John was likely written between A.D. 85-95.
Purpose of Writing: The Book of 1 John seems to be a summary that assumes the
readers’ knowledge of the gospel as written by John and offers certainty for their faith in
Christ. The first epistle indicates that the readers were confronted with the error of
gnosticism, which became a more serious problem in the second century. As a
philosophy of religion it held that matter is evil and spirit is good. The solution to the
tension between these two was knowledge, or gnosis, through which man rose from the
mundane to the spiritual. In the gospel message, this led to two false theories
concerning the person of Christ, Docetism—regarding the human Jesus as a ghost—and
Cerinthianism—making Jesus a dual personality, at times human and at times divine.
The key purpose of 1 John is to set boundaries on the content of faith and to give
believers assurance of their salvation.
Key Verses:
1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 3:6, “No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has
either seen him or known him.”
1 John 4:4, “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one
who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
1 John 5:13, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so
that you may know that you have eternal life.”
The key word is “knowledge,” with its related words, occurring at least 13 times in the
Book of 1 John.
Brief Summary: False spiritual teachers were a big problem in the early church. Because
there was not a complete New Testament that believers could refer to, many churches
fell prey to pretenders who taught their own ideas and advanced themselves as leaders.
John wrote this letter to set the record straight on some important issues, particularly
concerning the identity of Jesus Christ.
Because John’s letter was about the basics of faith in Christ, it helped his readers reflect
honestly on their faith. It helped them answer the question, Are we true believers? John
told them that they could tell by looking at their actions. If they loved one another, that
was evidence of God’s presence in their lives. But if they bickered and fought all the time
or were selfish and did not look out for one another, they were betraying that they, in
fact, did not know God.
That did not mean they had to be perfect. In fact, John also recognized that believing
involved admitting our sins and seeking God’s forgiveness. Depending on God for
cleansing from guilt, along with admitting our wrongs against others and making
amends, was another important part of getting to know God.
Connections: One of the most often-quoted passages regarding sin is found in 1 John
2:16. In this passage, John describes the three aspects of sin that recall the first and most
earth-shattering temptations in all of Scripture. The first sin—the disobedience of Eve—
was the result of her yielding to the same three temptations as we find in Genesis 3:6:
the lust of the flesh (“good for food”); the lust of the eyes (“pleasing to the eye”); and
the pride of life (“desirable for gaining wisdom”).
Practical Application: The Book of 1 John is a book of love and joy. It explains the
fellowship we have with others and with Jesus Christ. It differentiates between
happiness, which is temporary and fleeting, and true joy, which 1 John tells us how to
achieve. If we take the words written by John and we apply them to our daily lives, the
true love, commitment, fellowship, and joy we long for will be ours.
The apostle John knew Christ well. He is telling us that we can all have that close,
intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. We have the witness of men who had direct and
personal contact with Him. The Gospel writers present their solidly based testimony on a
historical reality. Now, how does that apply to our lives? It explains to us that Jesus came
here as the Son of God to create a union with us based on His grace, mercy, love, and
acceptance. So many times people think Jesus is off in some faraway place and that He
doesn’t really concern Himself with our daily struggles, issues, and concerns. But John is
telling us that Jesus is right here with us in both the simple, mundane parts of our lives
and in the complex, soul-wrenching parts as well. John testifies as a witness of his
personal experiences that God became flesh and lived among men. That means Christ
came here to live with us and He still lives with us. As He walked the earth alongside
John, so does He walk through each and every day with us. We need to apply this truth
to our lives and live as if Jesus were standing right next to us every second of the day. If
we put this truth into practice, Christ will add holiness to our lives, making us more and
more like Him.
Inleiding tot die Bybel – Bybel Samevatting
Opsomming van die Boek van 1
Johannes
lesers as die Johannes-evangelie gerig is.
hul geloof in Christus.
As ‘n
Kort opsomming: Valse geestelike leraars was ‘n groot probleem in die vroeë kerk.
Johannes getuig as
ons.
