Bible Teaching of the Day

Abide in the shadow of the Almighty

In one of the most uplifting passages of Scripture, we have this reassurance: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1, ESV). To dwell in the shadow of the Almighty is to live under the promise of God’s protection.

The word dwell means “to live in or be an inhabitant of.” Shelter refers to “a hiding place, covering, or protection.” Shadow suggests “shade, comfort, protection, and defense.” And abide means “lodge, live, spend the night.” The language of Psalm 91:1 speaks of someone who is wholly comfortable and accepted into the household and community life of the Most High God.

Most High is a title for God that effectively levels every threat. This name stresses God’s supreme power as the sovereign ruler of the world. Almighty or Shaddai is the name that upheld the wandering patriarchs (Exodus 6:3). As the Almighty, God is fully capable of accomplishing all of His promises.

Dwelling in the shadow of the Almighty is the everyday experience of someone who, although persecuted or threatened by danger, is thoroughly at home in the protection, comfort, and safety of Yahweh, the God of absolute power. This person declares of the Lord: “He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him” (Psalm 91:2, NLT).

Psalm 91 does not provide immunity from life’s threats. It does not promise God’s protection from danger and trouble; it offers the promise of God’s protection amid hardship and peril.

The theme of Psalm 91 focuses a spotlight on absolute trust in God and loyalty to Him. This kind of trust suggests intimate friendship with God. It is this sort of loving relationship that inspires the psalmist to say, “How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings” (Psalm 36:7, ESV). It is the attitude of one who clings to the Lord at all times, saying, “For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock” (Psalm 27:5, ESV).

The person who is always thinking about God and trusting in Him has the Almighty as a constant companion. The Lord stretches His “shadow” or “protective shade” over the man or woman who sets up camp in His presence.

Isaiah 25:4 describes the “shadow of the Almighty” as “a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat.” Psalm 18:2 declares, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety” (NLT). “The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand,” says Psalm 121:5.

Psalm 91 continues, “If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! The LORD says, ‘I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name’” (Psalm 91:9–14, NLT). Abiding in God’s presence, we find security, protection, and care. The ultimate victory is ours in Christ.

The “shadow of the Almighty” is like a shade cast by the Lord that marks off a clearly perceived boundary. Those who are covered by the Lord’s boundary line of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ will reside forever in God’s presence. Believers in Jesus are covered by the blood of Christ, which grants full access into the throne room of God’s grace (Hebrews 10:19–22; 13:12; Ephesians 2:13). The Lord’s sacrifice provides salvation and protection that stretches beyond the boundaries of this life (Hebrews 9:12). Only the redeemed of the Lord can securely say, “Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings!” (Psalm 61:4, NLT).

To dwell in the “shadow of the Almighty” is to find complete and eternal rest and safety, no matter what we face in this life, in death, or in the life to come.

Hierdie persoon verklaar van die Here: “Hy alleen is my toevlug, my veilige plek; Hy is my God, en op Hom vertrou ek” (Psalm 91:2).

Psalm 18:2 verklaar: “Die HERE is my rots, my vesting en my verlosser; my God is my rots, by wie ek beskerming vind. Hy is my skild, die krag wat my red, my toevlugsoord” (NLT).

Today’s Devotional

“COME SIT A WHILE”

I often see vehicles with stickers stating “Protected by Psalm 91” on the back.

Today I wish to spend some time on Psalm 91 but with special emphasis on verse 1. Reading verse one you will see that God (by mouth of the Psalmist) sets out certain terms and conditions we need to adhere to prior to claiming or receiving God’s protection. In this verse the psalmist gives a prerequisite to receive this protection.

Let’s read Psalm 91: 1 from a few different translations:

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (King James)
You who sit down in the High God’s presence, spend the night in Shaddai’s shadow, (Message)
Whoever lives under the shelter of the Most High will remain in the shadow of the Almighty. (God’s word)

The Hebrew text literally means: “to sit down, by implication to dwell, to remain; to ease oneself, to settle, to become comfortable.” (Taken from the Strong’s commentary)

For us to experience the promises of God in this Psalm we need to comply with God’s terms and conditions. God wants us to come into his presence – to sit down with Him. Sitting down implies that we are not in a hurry, we’re at ease and comfortable. A lot of times we appear to be in a hurry, it seems like we are simply passing through. We pray in the run. We haven’t got time to sit down and spend some time with God or to relax in His presence.

Many years ago, a friend of mine gave me the following advice, “Go rest on a moonlit porch for a while. Don’t talk too much, just sit, and listen. Soon the night sounds will start ministering to you, the sounds we all know like a cricket singing or a bird protecting its young. But between these sounds there’s another voice waiting to be heard. It is the soft gentle voice of the Father who wants to touch you and remind you of his love, power, and assistance.”

Let us take some time out and sit in God’s presence. Let us allow Him to minister to us trough His Spirit. God will protect us, bless us and keep us – but God wants us to spend quality time in His presence. Let us be still, and know that He is God! (Psalm 46:10)

Vandag se Bemoediging

“KOM SIT ‘N RUKKIE”

(Psalm 46:10)

INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL ARTISTS

MEET : THE PERRYS

The group was formed on December 25, 1970 by siblings Randy, Debbie, and Libbi Perry, in Georgia. In the mid-1980s, the group signed with former Happy Goodman Family pianist Eddie Crook on his Morning Star Records label. The group was soon joined by bass singer Tracy Stuffle, whom Libbi married shortly thereafter. Debbie left the group to focus on her family and was replaced by Denise Helton.

In 1994, after the release of their album Grace, Randy Perry left the group to concentrate on evangelism and Denise Helton also left the group to pursue other ventures. Band member Kent Barrett left to become a pastor. Nicole Watts and Barry Scott came in to fill these spots. Scott soon left the group and was replaced by Mike Bowling, a former member of the New Hinsons. In 1997, the group transitioned to Daywind Records, owned by Dottie Leonard Miller. They also signed an exclusive booking agreement with Harper and Associates. Their first album with Daywind, Crossings, included their first two #1 songs on the Singing News charts, “Not Even a Stone” and “By Faith I Can Touch Him Now”.

Bowling left to join The Crabb Family and pursue a solo career, and Nicole Watts married and left the group shortly after his departure. David Hill joined the Perrys and held the lead position for approximately nine months. His only album with the group was, “Absolutely, Positively, Live!”, which included the #1 hit, “Praise God, It’s Settled, I’m Saved”. Loren Harris, formerly of the Wilburns, took the lead position shortly afterward. The group decided to not fill the soprano position and instead hired baritone Curt Davis. It was during this time that the Perrys had their fourth #1 song, “I Rest My Case at the Cross”.

In August 2003, Curt Davis resigned from the Perrys. Joseph Habedank replaced Davis. After pianist Justin Ellis left to perform with the Crabb Family, the Perrys hired Matthew Holt as the group’s pianist in September 2004 at the National Quartet Convention. It was around this time that the Perrys had their fifth #1 song, “I Wish I Could Have Been There”.

The Perrys were awarded Singing News Fan Awards for the 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mixed Quartet of the Year. The group received Harmony Honors Awards for Favorite Album of the Year (This Is the Day) and Favorite Song of the Year (I Wish I Could Have Been There). Libbi Perry Stuffle was awarded Singing News Fan Awards in 2005 for Female Vocalist and Alto Singer of the Year and in 2006 for Alto Singer of the Year. The Perrys were also awarded the Singing News Fan Award for Album of the Year in 2006 for their album Remembering the Happy Goodmans.

In 2006, lead vocalist Loren Harris resigned to spend more time with his family. Joseph Habedank moved to the lead position and Nick Trammell filled the baritone position. The first recording, Look No Further, under the new lineup was released in September 2007 at the National Quartet Convention. Nick Trammell received the Horizon Individual award from Singing News Fans for 2007. In July 2008, Matthew Holt announced his departure. Bryan Elliott joined the Perrys as pianist in August 2008.

It was announced on February 24, 2009 that Nick Trammell was departing from the group. Former audio engineer and Steeles member Troy Peach replaced Trammell. After Peach joined, the group began work on a new album for Daywind Records. At the 2009 National Quartet Convention, Libbi Perry Stuffle and Joseph Habedank were voted Favorite Alto and Favorite Young Artist respectively in the 2009 Singing News Fan Awards. The group’s received two GMA Dove Awards nominations for Southern Gospel Recorded Album and Southern Gospel Recorded Song (“If You Knew Him”). The group released a second single, “Did I Mention”, in early 2010. The song debuted on the March 2010 Singing News Charts at #47 and made it to #1 in July 2010. The group received elevn Top 5 nominations in the 2010 Singing News Fan Awards for Favorite Artist, Mixed Group, Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Horizon Individual, Young Artist, Alto, Lead, Songwriter, Album, and Song.

After the National Quartet Convention in 2010, pianist Bryan Elliott announced he would be departing to play for Gold City. In mid-October 2010, it was announced that Troy Peach would be leaving the group and the baritone spot would be filled by Bryan Walker. Walker announced his departure on October 15, 2014. He was replaced by the returning Troy Peach.

Bass singer Tracy Stuffle died on Sunday February 4, 2018 after suffering a stroke in 2013.

Bible Prophecy in the News

The Meeting between the Eagle Wings and the King of the South = Bible Terms
Trump snubs traditional allies and marks Gulf power with his first major foreign trip

Presidents usually travel to Canada or Mexico first. Trump’s trip to Saudi Arabia highlights the region’s growing influence — and Trump’s tension with many longtime allies.

President Donald Trump will return to familiar ground in Saudi Arabia next week, choosing the kingdom as the destination for his first major foreign trip of his second term, just as he did in 2017 — once again bypassing the traditional allies who have usually hosted presidents.

The decision underscores a broader Trump White House strategy, prioritizing the Middle East’s economic and strategic influence over North America’s deep-rooted trade and security ties.

With an eye on blockbuster deals, a Nobel-worthy diplomatic breakthrough and the Middle East’s role as a geopolitical fulcrum, Trump is chasing defining moments in a region that he has treated as a diplomatic and economic cornerstone. Meanwhile, his unpredictable tariffs and diplomatic approach has cast a shadow over partnerships with Canada and Mexico.

This is the second time Trump has chosen Saudi Arabia over the U.S.’ closest neighbors, diverging from a long tradition. Until Trump, Mexico and Canada had been the first or second foreign destination of nearly every U.S. president in the post-World War II era, according to the State Department. Two presidents, including Joe Biden, traveled first to another NATO ally, the United Kingdom, while America’s 37th president, Richard Nixon, made Belgium his first stop for NATO meetings.

Otherwise, presidents of both parties have stuck to the path trod by the likes of Ronald Reagan, who made his first foreign trip to Canada in March 1981, after traveling two months earlier to Mexico as president-elect.

The changing trend also underscores an evolution in U.S. priorities, with the visit building on prior U.S.-Saudi engagements under both Trump and Biden. (Trump also made a brief visit to the Vatican last month for Pope Francis’ funeral, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. But the stop was not a planned diplomatic trip with the groundwork and pageantry surrounding a state visit.)

During an Oval Office meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, Trump told the room he would make two more stops on the trip, to the neighboring United Arab Emirates and Qatar, nations involved in mediating conflicts he has sought to address.

Adding a layer of intrigue to the visit, Trump’s family’s business ties in the Gulf have drawn attention at home, as his namesake company signals that it is not going to withhold from doing foreign business. Last month, the Trump Organization struck a deal for a Trump-branded golf course to be built north of the Qatari capital by a Saudi Arabian firm.

Analysts noted the Gulf is now a swing region pivotal to global economic stability, connecting the U.S., China and Europe. Among other major events, it has hosted ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, with Saudi Arabia playing a mediating role since Russia’s invasion, including by facilitating talks.

“It’s a strategic linchpin,” said Brian Katulis, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, “which is a different and new way to think about it than Americans have thought about the Middle East, which is typically associated with endless wars and terrorism.”

And, he added, “there will be bling” — observing a lavish aesthetic alignment between the Gulf states and a president who this week remarked how the Oval Office had grown more beautiful with the addition of “great love and 24-karat gold.”

A White House official said about the trip that a “secure and stable Middle East means greater prosperity for our partner nations and the United States. President Trump will discuss investment and economic cooperation with these foreign leaders, among other topics.”

Still, the slight to Canada and Mexico, both cornerstones of North American trade and security, has not gone unnoticed.

“It does signal the fact that he does not believe in how critically important the North American relationship is,” said Arturo Sarukhan, a former Mexican ambassador to the U.S., while highlighting both countries’ role in addressing economic competition with China. “You can’t press control-alt-delete, and erase Canada or Mexico from your northern or southern border.”

Trump says he’ll decide on name of ‘Persian Gulf’ on Middle East visit

US president says he will announce decision on waterway during trip to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

United States President Donald Trump has said he will make a decision on how the US refers to the “Persian Gulf” during an upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said he expected his hosts to ask about the name the US uses for the waterway during his first trip to the Middle East since retaking the White House.

“I’ll have to make a decision,” Trump said in response to a question about whether he would make an announcement on the body of water’s name.

“I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. I don’t know if feelings are going to be hurt.”

“I’m going to be given a briefing on that and I’ll make a decision,” Trump added.

Trump’s comments came after US media reported that he plans to use the May 13-16 trip to announce that the US will begin referring to the body of water as the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia.

The name of the waterway has long been a source of tensions between Arab nations and Iran.

Iran argues that the “Persian Gulf” is the appropriate name in light of historical evidence, including ancient maps, that shows it is part of its territory.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and other Arab states use the term “Arabian Gulf” or “the Gulf”.

In 2023, Tehran summoned the Iraqi ambassador to protest his country’s use of the name “Arabian Gulf Cup” for the region’s flagship football tournament.

In 2012, Iran threatened to sue internet giant Google for leaving the waterway nameless on its online map services.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the latest suggestions of a name change as “indicative of hostile intent toward Iran and its people”, and warned that such a move would “only bring the wrath of all Iranians from all walks of life”.

Signs of the Times

You Thought Your Phone Tracked You? Meet Your Car

A recent survey by the American Automobile Association found that more than 80% of consumers are unaware their vehicle collects and shares data at all. What makes this worse is that you can’t simply “opt out.”

It used to be that stepping into your vehicle felt like entering your own private bubble—a rolling sanctuary where you could sing off-key, vent your frustrations, or sit in silence with your thoughts. That illusion is dead. In its place, we have machines that may be tracking, storing, and selling everything from our location history to driver behavior or even personal contacts.

Yes, your car might know more about you than your own spouse.

An investigation by Mozilla’s Privacy Not Included project named modern cars the worst category of consumer products when it comes to privacy. Let that sink in. Worse than your smartphone. Worse than your smart TV. Worse even than those always-listening home assistants sitting in your kitchen.

Cars now function like smartphones on wheels—only with more sensors, fewer user controls, and significantly less awareness by the people being tracked. The infotainment system records your calls and contacts. Cameras and microphones inside and out capture your behavior. GPS logs your movements. Tire sensors, braking patterns, acceleration habits—all fed into a voracious data engine.

The idea that you “own” your vehicle is a myth. You’re renting mobility from a corporation that may be quietly monetizing your behavior.

The $400 Billion Data Grab

Why is this happening? Because driver data is big business. According to McKinsey & Company, vehicle data could generate up to $400 billion annually by 2030. Carmakers have figured out that while hardware sales plateau, monetizing data creates a renewable revenue stream.

Andrea Amico of Privacy4Cars warns that people still view their vehicles as private spaces. “But they’re not,” he says. “They’re data centers.”

And most drivers haven’t a clue.

A recent survey by the American Automobile Association found that more than 80% of consumers are unaware their vehicle collects and shares data at all. That ignorance has consequences. Some insurance companies now adjust premiums based on driving behavior extracted from your vehicle, often without transparent consent. Your insurer may know what time you drive, where you go, and how fast you get there—and price your policy accordingly.

Spyware on Wheels—and No Off Switch

What makes this worse is that you can’t simply “opt out.” Many carmakers bury data-sharing permissions in long, dense user agreements signed under pressure at the dealership—if they’re presented at all. Thorin Klosowski of the Electronic Frontier Foundation recalls realizing, moments after buying his car, that he had essentially agreed to hand his personal data to a third party. “And I do this for a living,” he said.

Even used cars pose privacy risks. One YouTuber recently revealed he could still track a Volvo he had sold, viewing every stop the new owner made—church, school, home. That isn’t just creepy; it’s dangerous.

And then there’s the looming specter of federally mandated kill switches. Hidden in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a requirement that all new vehicles by 2026 include technology capable of disabling the car remotely, potentially without the driver’s consent. Ostensibly, this is about preventing drunk driving. In reality, it opens the door to a surveillance tool ripe for abuse—by governments, hackers, or corporations.

Already, some subprime lenders install kill switches to disable vehicles when payments are missed. Imagine what happens when that power expands.

We Are Not the Customers—We Are the Commodity

The Silicon Valley mantra, “If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product,” doesn’t hold up here. We’re paying—often $50,000 or more—and still being treated like the product.

And we’re not just talking about telemetry or braking behavior. Nissan’s 2023 privacy policy (before public backlash forced edits) included language about collecting sensitive personal data like “sexual orientation,” “health diagnoses,” and even “genetic information.” This isn’t just surveillance—it’s profiling.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation insists this is all about safety. But that’s like calling a security camera in your shower a safety feature. “Safety” has become the fig leaf behind which a profitable, barely regulated surveillance industry hides.

A Nation Asleep at the Wheel

So where’s the outrage? We’ve accepted smart speakers that eavesdrop, phones that track us, and TVs that log what we watch. But cars? This crosses a sacred line. For many Americans, the car is a last refuge of autonomy and control. Now it’s just another portal into your private life.

We urgently need legislation that reflects the scope and sensitivity of what carmakers are collecting. In Europe, the GDPR offers at least some guardrails. The U.S. has no equivalent federal data privacy law—and automakers are exploiting that void.

Until that changes, your best defense is vigilance. Read the fine print. Disable what you can. Ask your dealer for a copy of the data-sharing agreement before you sign. Reset your vehicle before you sell it.

The car used to symbolize freedom—open roads, spontaneous detours, long stretches of solitude. Now, it’s just one more node in the vast web of surveillance that quietly monitors our lives. We’ve been told there’s nowhere to hide from the watchful eyes of modern technology. Now, there’s nowhere left to drive. This is yet another example of how easily we trade our freedoms for convenience, surrendering privacy not with resistance, but with a signature and a smile—never realizing what we’ve lost until it’s too late.

The Danger Of Looking To AI ‘Companions’ To Solve the Worlds Loneliness Epidemic

The World are in the midst of a loneliness epidemic, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is pitching artificial intelligence (AI) “companions” as the cure.

In a recent interview with Dwarkesh Patel, Zuckerberg laid out a vision where AI could fill the void of human connection, seamlessly blending into daily life. But critics, including Christian scholars, warn that this solution not only misunderstands the problem but exacerbates it. In fact, many argue that platforms like Facebook, which Zuckerberg himself built, have served as key culprits in driving social isolation.

Zuckerberg highlighted a sobering statistic: in a world where many crave at least 15 strong relationships, the average American has fewer than three people they consider friends. “The reality is that people just don’t have the connection,” he said, “and they feel more alone a lot of the time than they would like.” His solution? AI companions embedded in devices like Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, designed to serve as emotional confidants, pseudo-therapists, or even stand-ins for romantic partners.

“The AI is there when you want it, but when you don’t, it’s like a great, good-looking pair of glasses that people like, and it kind of gets out of the way,” Zuckerberg explained. He envisions AI helping users navigate tough conversations, like conflicts with a partner or a boss, becoming “really compelling” as it learns their preferences and mimics human interaction.

Yet, this techno-utopian promise rings hollow for many, who see AI companionship not as a lifeline but as a chilling distortion of human relationships. It’s not just because the idea of robot friends is unsettling, but as some have argued, the very concept is an affront to what it means to be made in the image of God. On Friday’s “Washington Watch,” alongside guest host and former Congressman Jody Hice, Family Research Council’s Owen Strachan, senior fellow of the Center for Biblical Worldview, dismantled Zuckerberg’s proposal by arguing that it undermines the very essence of what it means to be human.

“There’s definitely an epidemic of loneliness,” Strachan declared, “but one of the reasons why there is an epidemic of loneliness is because of outlets like Facebook, which Zuckerberg famously created.” He pointed to a cultural shift over the past two decades, where “we’ve traded in investing in real-life friendship face-to-face for virtual engagement.” The result? “What we don’t need is more fake friends. We need more real friends.”

Hice agreed, stating that it’s important to “come right out of the gate and explain that Facebook itself has contributed to the epidemic of loneliness.” However, and “interestingly, Zuckerberg’s solution is artificial intelligence. Is that really an authentic potential replacement for human relationships?” The short answer, according to Strachan, is no.

He noted, “I’m sure that there are all sorts of ways technology can continue to help us to a limited degree in our life.” It certainly has its uses and benefits, Strachan stated. Yet, “as Christians, we have to say the Tower of Babel alone would tell us that you’ve got to watch technology carefully. There are limits to what it can do for you.” He warned, “When you start asking technology to replace the goods of personal interaction — corporate fellowship in a church or friendship with actual real life human people or a spouse or something like that — I think you may either be over the line or very near it.

As Strachan put it, “The image of God means that we are fundamentally made by God for God’s glory, and we are made for relationship.” He pointed to Adam and Eve’s communion with God and each other as an example of this. “God is a personal God. He’s a personal being. He’s not a stone monolith in the sky,” Strachan stressed. This divine blueprint extends to human connections — husband and wife, parent and child, church family, and neighbors — where “loving your neighbor” is central to Christian life. AI, he argued, cannot replicate this sacred relational fabric.

Zuckerberg’s vision may be technologically dazzling, but as Strachan and Hice argued, it sidesteps a grim irony: the same platforms that fractured human connection are now peddling AI as the fix. Strachan and Hice, however, consider this use of AI a dangerous overreach, reducing profound human experiences to algorithms.

The question remains: will society embrace AI companions as a bandage for loneliness, or recommit to the messy, beautiful reality of human relationships? For those rooted in faith, as Strachan and Hice highlighted, the answer is clear: connection is not a product to be engineered but a divine gift to be cherished.

Places in the Bible

Garden Tomb

Also known as Gordon’s Calvary, Gordon’s Tomb

Rocky Escarpment

In Jerusalem for a visit in 1883, General Charles Gordon spied a prominent rocky crag which looked to him like it could be the “place of the skull” mentioned in the Bible as where Jesus was crucified.

Around the corner, a previously discovered rock-hewn tomb was associated with the escarpment, and Gordon popularized the view that this was the actual place where Jesus was crucified and buried.

The Hill of the Skull

The slope has eroded badly in the last hundred years, but some maintain they can still see the eye sockets and the nose bridge. Regardless, it should be noted that while the Bible locates the crucifixion at the “place of the skull,” it never says that it was on a hill, nor that this place bore the resemblance of a skull. It also could be asked if this hill which resembles a skull looked the same 2,000 years ago.

The Garden Tomb

While officially the Garden Tomb Association only maintains this as a possible site for Christ’s burial, some tour guides of the site are convinced of the authenticity. They note the large cistern nearby, which proves the area must have been a garden in Jesus’s day. They claim that marks of Christian veneration at the tomb also prove its sanctity throughout the ages.

The Resting Place

This tomb is the place believed by many to be the resting place of Jesus. Some archaeologists question the authenticity of the tomb because typological features suggest that it is a tomb originally hewn in the time of the Old Testament and not a “new tomb” as specifically stated in Scripture.

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summary

Summary of the Book of
Obadiah

Author: Obadiah verse 1 identifies the author of the Book of Obadiah as the Prophet
Obadiah.
Date of Writing: The Book of Obadiah was likely written either between 848 and 840
BC, following an invasion of the Philistines and Arabians, or between 607 and 585 BC,
following one of the invasions of the Babylonians.
Purpose of Writing: Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament, is only 21 verses
long. Obadiah is a prophet of God who uses this opportunity to condemn Edom for sins
against both God and Israel. The Edomites are descendants of Esau and the Israelites are
descendants of his twin brother, Jacob. A quarrel between the brothers has affected
their descendants for over 1,000 years. This division caused the Edomites to forbid Israel
to cross their land during the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt. Edom’s sins of pride now
require a strong word of judgment from the Lord.
Key Verses:
Obadiah verse 4, “‘Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,’ declares the LORD.”
Obadiah verse 12, “You should not look down on your brother in the day of his
misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor
boast so much in the day of their trouble.”
Obadiah verse 15, “The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will
be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.”
Brief Summary: Obadiah’s message is final and it is sure: the kingdom of Edom will be
destroyed completely. Edom has been arrogant, gloating over Israel’s misfortunes, and
when enemy armies attack Israel and the Israelites ask for help, the Edomites refuse and
choose to fight against them, not for them. These sins of pride can be overlooked no
longer. The book ends with the promise of the fulfillment and deliverance of Zion in the
Last Days when the land will be restored to God’s people as He rules over them.
Foreshadowings: Verse 21 of the Book of Obadiah contains a foreshadowing of Christ
and His Church. “Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau,
And the kingdom shall be the LORD’s” (NKJV). These “saviors” (also called “deliverers” in
several versions) are the apostles of Christ, ministers of the word, and especially the
preachers of the Gospel in these latter days. They are called “saviors,” not because they
obtain our salvation, but because they preach salvation through the Gospel of Christ
and show us the way to obtain that salvation. They, and the Word preached by them,
are the means by which the good news of salvation is delivered to all men. While Christ
is the only Savior who alone came to purchase salvation, and is the author of it, saviors
and deliverers of the Gospel will be more and more in evidence as the end of the age
draws near.
Practical Application: God will overcome in our behalf if we will stay true to
Him. Unlike Edom, we must be willing to help others in times of need. Pride is sin. We
have nothing to be proud of except Jesus Christ and what He has done for us.

Inleiding tot die Bybel – Bybel Samevatting

Opsomming van die Boek
Obadja
Skrywer:
Ek jou afbring,’ spreek die HERE.”
Hoogmoed is
sonde.
