The concept of taming the tongue is found in James 3 where God declares, through the apostle James, that “no one can tame the tongue” (James 3:8). The lengthy discussion about the tongue in this chapter is both convicting and illuminating. Among the things this chapter reveals about the tongue: it is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts (verse 5); it is a fire and a world of evil that defiles the whole person (verse 6); it is set on fire by hell (verse 6); and it is an unrestrainable evil and full of deadly poison (verse 7). Is it any wonder, then, that God declares that taming the tongue is impossible?

When Adam sinned, God imputed that sin to mankind, so, whether or not we want to believe it, every human being is born with a wicked heart and an evil sin nature (Romans 3:10–18). Lurking within each of us are varying degrees of hatred, bitterness, jealousy, and pride, and the tongue takes hold of these and other destructive tendencies and strikes out, often with a push from Satan. We see this every day among strangers, friends, siblings, and, worst of all, among husbands and wives, the very people who, next to their love for the Lord Jesus, should have the most love for each other (Ephesians 5:22–33).

What is to be done, then, to tame the tongue? If God has declared that “no one” can tame the tongue, how can we even begin to do so? While many people have quit smoking or drinking by the power of the human will, the problem of the heart and tongue cannot be solved by human will power. It takes the power of the resurrected Christ within us to control the tongue, and that power is available only to those who turn their lives over to Him (Romans 8:10–14). As with so many things in life, “with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

There is only One who can control the tongue. Only by God’s Spirit living within us can we hope to gain control over our tongues. He convicts us when we sin with our lips, and that conviction drives us to repent and pray for more filling of the Spirit so we can avoid further sin. As we cling to Him and yield to Him in obedience, He controls us more and more, including our tongues.

Bible Teaching of the Day

In Ephesians 1 we learn about our incredible spiritual riches in Christ (Ephesians 1:3) and how God works to provide these riches for us—including our redemption: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us” (Ephesians 1:7–8).

In Ephesians 1 Paul encourages believers at Ephesus by explaining their new identity in Christ. God gave us that new identity, and we learn in the following chapter that we receive God’s grace by faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9). This new identity in Christ is characterized by our having every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).

Notably, all three Persons of the Trinity played a role in giving us these blessings. God the Father chose us to be in Christ to be holy and blameless before Him (Ephesians 1:4). He also predetermined or predestined that we would be adopted as sons through the work of Christ (Ephesians 1:5). God the Son also worked so that we could have a new identity. In Him we have redemption and forgiveness through His shed blood (Ephesians 1:7). God the Holy Spirit seals believers as God’s guarantee or pledge that we do indeed have eternal life (Ephesians 1:13–14).

This new identity in Christ is made possible by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and it is accomplished by the work of Christ on the cross. In Him we have redemption, which Paul identifies as the forgiveness of our sins according to God’s rich grace given to us. The term redemption is translated from the Greek apolutrosin, which means “the act of fully setting free.” Paul explains the need for that redemption in the following chapter.

In Ephesians 2, we learn that we need redemption because we were dead in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1). We were physically alive, but we were in bondage to sin and walked enslaved to the world, the devil, and our own flesh (Ephesians 2:2–3). Ultimately, we were deserving of God’s wrath. We owed a debt we could never repay on our own. We were enemies of God (Romans 5:10), as Paul explains elsewhere. But in Christ we have redemption (Ephesians 1:7). He died on the cross to set us free. By God’s grace through our believing in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9) we are set free from the bondage of sin (Romans 8:2) and from the wrath and judgment of God (Romans 5:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:9).

Paul writes to make sure that believers understand that in Christ we have redemption—in Him we are fully set free. Furthermore, God has accomplished this for His own glory (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14). We know that, if God has staked His own glory on our having redemption in Him, that God has made certain that we are fully set free. Jesus explained that the one who believes in Him has eternal life (John 6:47). Peter identifies at least eleven ways we can be certain that the redemption we have in Christ has been accomplished (1 Peter 1:3–5). Paul affirms to the Colossians that in Him we have redemption, which is the forgiveness of our sins (Colossians 1:14). And if there is any doubt in our minds as to the security of our redemption in Christ, Paul reminds us that we are sealed for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30).

Though we are still surrounded by the consequences of sin—even in our own bodies—one day we will experience every aspect of being free from sin. In Him we have redemption. In Him we have been fully set free.

Today’s Devotional

“JEREMIAH’S PRAYERS”

Whenever we think of the book of Jeremiah we think of Jeremiah 29:11 which say that God knows what He planned for us, to prosper and not to harm, to give us hope and a future. But the book of Jeremiah contains more than just this verse. It also contains several prayers in which the prophet laid himself bare and revealed his trust in the Lord.

In Jeremiah 12:3, Jeremiah acknowledged that there is nothing hidden from God when he prayed, “You know me, Lord; you see me and test my thoughts about you.”

In Jeremiah 10:23-24, Jeremiah acknowledged his dependence on God to direct his paths and to correct him when required. The verse reads, “I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course. So, correct me, Lord, but please be gentle. Do not correct me in anger, for I would die.”

In Jeremiah 17:14, Jeremiah did not just ask for healing and salvation but also confessed his faith in the Lord when he said, “Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.” This firm believe in God is emphasized in Jeremiah 32: 17 in which Jeremiah said to the Lord, “There is nothing too hard [or too difficult] for You.”

However, in Jeremiah 32:19, Jeremiah indirectly cautioned us that some prayers may remain unanswered because of what the Lord sees, the way we live, and the things we do. The verse states that the Lord is great in counsel and mighty in work. His eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.

But then, what does the Lord require of us? Jeremiah answers this question in Jeremiah 15:16-17 in which he indicated that he ate the word, removed himself from revellers (sinners) and sat alone because God’s hand was on him.

Like Jeremiah, I pray; “Lord, I know there is nothing too difficult for you. You know me, Lord; you see me and test my thoughts about you. Correct me, Lord, but please be gentle and teach me to eat Your Word, to remove myself from Sinners and sin and spend time with you. Amen and Amen.”

Vandag se Bemoediging

 “JEREMIA SE GEBEDE”

a Song To Remember:

Music can help us remember words and ideas, but it can also help us forget things that we can easily forget! God knew that the Israelites would forget Him when they entered the Promised Land (Deut. 31:20). They would forsake Him, turn to idols, and as a result, serious problems would follow (vs 16-18). So God asked Moses to compose a song and teach it to the Israelites so that they would remember their intimate relationship with Him and also the sin that damaged that relationship with Him (31:9-22). But more importantly, God wanted the people to remember His character: “He is the faithful God, without iniquity, a God of truth” (Deut. 32:4). Think about what God might want you to remember about Him. Is it His omnipotence, His holiness, His love, His faithfulness? Think of a song that describes God’s character and sing it from your heart to God and to Him (Ephesians 5:19).

Songs are the incense that brings a joyful soul to the Lord!

Vandag = Rut
Wie was Rut?

(Rut 1:1-6, 15) Rut het egter lojaal by haar skoonmoeder gebly.

Women in the Bible—What Can We Learn From Them?

Today = Ruth
Who was Ruth?
She was a Moabitess who left her gods and her homeland to become a worshipper of God in the land of Israel.

What did she do? Ruth showed extraordinary love to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Naomi, along with her husband and their two sons, had gone to Moab to escape a famine in Israel. The sons eventually married Moabite women—Ruth and Orpah. In time, though, Naomi’s husband and two sons died, leaving three widows.

Naomi decided to return to Israel, where the drought was now over. Ruth and Orpah chose to go with her. But Naomi asked them to return to their relatives. Orpah did so. (Ruth 1:1-6, 15) Ruth, however, loyally stuck with her mother-in-law. She loved Naomi and wanted to worship Naomi’s God,.—Ruth 1:16, 17; 2:11.

Ruth’s reputation as a devoted daughter-in-law and a hard worker soon earned her a good name in Naomi’s hometown, Bethlehem. A wealthy landowner named Boaz was deeply impressed by Ruth and generously provided food for her and Naomi. (Ruth 2:5-7, 20) Ruth later married Boaz and became an ancestress of both King David and Jesus Christ.—Matthew 1:5, 6, 16.

What can we learn from Ruth? Out of love for Naomi and God, Ruth willingly uprooted her life. She was hardworking, devoted, and loyal, even in the face of adversity.

Bible Prophecy in the News

Practice Burning of Red Heifer Carried Out

In the drill, a red heifer that had been housed at Shiloh by the Boneh Israel organization was prepared and burned on a pyre of wood as preparation for the possibility of an actual ceremony in the future. The heifer was not suitable for the actual ceremony, as it had been inspected by the rabbis of the Temple Institute and judged to have non-red hairs.
