Second Corinthians 7:1 says, “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (NKJV). To be cleansed from spiritual and moral uncleanliness, believers must “perfect holiness” in reverent obedience to God. This does not mean that we will reach a state of sinless perfection in this life; rather, it means that, as we obey God, we will be transformed more and more into the image of Christ. The NLT says, “Let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.”
In the preceding chapter, Paul discusses God’s desire to dwell among His people and be their God (2 Corinthians 6:16). More than that, God promised, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters” (verse 18). These are the promises Paul mentions in 2 Corinthians 7:1 that motivate us to separate ourselves from the world and “perfect holiness in the fear of God.” Since God has established a relationship between us and Himself, we should be holy in all aspects of life.
Holiness is the attribute of being set apart for God’s service, reflecting His perfect moral character. In Leviticus 11:44, God says, “I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy” (ESV). Perfecting holiness in the fear of God means striving to reflect God’s character in one’s life. This is not an instantaneous process but involves continuous sanctification through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Holiness affects both our inward thoughts and external actions. For this reason, Paul says that we must “cleanse ourselves from filthiness of the flesh and spirit” (NKJV). This corresponds to what he says in Romans 12:1: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (ESV). Perfecting holiness in the fear of God requires us to align our thoughts, desires, and actions with God’s will (Romans 12:2).
The fear of God is reverent obedience to Him, recognizing His holiness, majesty, and sovereignty. Proverbs 9:10 states, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight” (ESV). Perfecting holiness in the fear of God is rooted in a deep respect for who God is. It is not about being terrified of God but about honoring Him with our body and spirit.
Reverential fear of God should motivate us to avoid sin and pursue His righteousness. Philippians 2:12–13 urges believers to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (ESV). Perfecting holiness in the fear of God means to humbly submit to God’s sanctifying work in our lives, striving to live in a way that pleases Him. Another motivation is the knowledge that Jesus is coming again: “All who have this hope in him [of Jesus’ return] purify themselves, just as he is pure” (1 John 3:3).
There are several ways to perfect holiness in the fear of God. One is to humbly ask for God’s assistance: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23–24). The Lord will help us to identify areas that need to be cleansed.
Another way to perfect holiness in the fear of God is to actively pursue a life of integrity and moral behavior. Micah 6:8 says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (ESV). Perfecting holiness in the fear of God means that we are committed to God’s holiness, demonstrating justice, mercy, and humility.
Second Corinthians 7:1 calls believers to perfect or complete holiness in the fear of God. This lifetime pursuit is a response to the promises of God. By understanding the nature of holiness, submitting to God in reverential obedience, and growing in the grace and knowledge of Christ, we can better reflect God’s holiness in our lives
Tweede Korintiërs 7:1 sê: “Terwyl ons dan hierdie beloftes het, geliefdes, laat ons ons van alle besoedeling van die vlees en die gees reinig en heiligmaking in die vrees van God volbring” (NKJV). In die vorige hoofstuk bespreek Paulus God se begeerte om onder Sy mense te woon en hulle God te wees (2 Korintiërs 6:16). Meer as dit, God het belowe: “Ek sal vir julle ‘n Vader wees, en julle sal vir My seuns en dogters wees” (vers 18). Dit is die beloftes wat Paulus in 2 Korintiërs 7:1 noem wat ons motiveer om onsself van die wêreld af te sonder en “heiligmaking in die vrees van God te volbring”. Aangesien God ‘n verhouding tussen ons en Homself gevestig het, moet ons in alle aspekte van die lewe heilig wees.

Die vrees van God is eerbiedige gehoorsaamheid aan Hom, die erkenning van Sy heiligheid, majesteit en soewereiniteit. Spreuke 9:10 sê: “Die vrees van die Here is die begin van wysheid, en die kennis van die Heilige is insig” (ESV). Om heiligheid in die vrees van God te vervolmaak, is gewortel in ‘n diep respek vir wie God is. Dit gaan nie daaroor om vir God bang te wees nie, maar daaroor om Hom met ons liggaam en gees te eer.
Eerbiedige vrees vir God behoort ons te motiveer om sonde te vermy en Sy geregtigheid na te streef. Filippense 2:12–13 spoor gelowiges aan om “julle eie heil uit te werk met vrees en bewing, want dit is God wat in julle werk, beide om te wil en om te werk na sy welbehae” (ESV). Om heiligheid in die vrees van God te vervolmaak, beteken om nederig te onderwerp aan God se heiligmakende werk in ons lewens, en daarna te streef om te leef op ‘n manier wat Hom behaag. Nog ‘n motivering is die wete dat Jesus weer kom: “Almal wat hierdie hoop in Hom [van Jesus se wederkoms] het, reinig hulleself, soos Hy rein is” (1 Johannes 3:3).
Daar is verskeie maniere om heiligheid in die vrees van God te volmaak. Een is om nederig om God se hulp te vra: “Deurgrond My, o God, en ken my hart! Toets My en ken my gedagtes! En kyk of daar in my ‘n weg is wat moeilik is, en lei my op die ewige weg!” (Psalm 139:23–24). Die Here sal ons help om areas te identifiseer wat gereinig moet word.
Nog ‘n manier om heiligheid in die vrees van God te volmaak, is om aktief ‘n lewe van integriteit en morele gedrag na te streef. Miga 6:8 sê: “Hy het jou bekend gemaak, o mens, wat goed is; en wat vra die Here van jou anders as om reg te doen en liefde te betoon en ootmoedig te wandel met jou God?” (ESV). Om heiligheid in die vrees van God te volmaak, beteken dat ons verbind is tot God se heiligheid, en geregtigheid, barmhartigheid en nederigheid demonstreer.
Tweede Korintiërs 7:1 roep gelowiges op tot volmaakte of algehele heiligheid in die vrees van God. Hierdie lewenslange strewe is ‘n reaksie op die beloftes van God. Deur die aard van heiligheid te verstaan, ons aan God in eerbiedige gehoorsaamheid te onderwerp, en te groei in die genade en kennis van Christus, kan ons God se heiligheid beter in ons lewens weerspieël.

The holiness of God is a critical facet of His character. God desires—even commands—that His people seek after His holiness (Leviticus 11:44). Emulating a lifestyle that reflects God’s holiness is so important that the writer of Hebrews urged Christians to “strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14, ESV).
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Matthew 5:8). People who desire to live in close fellowship with the Lord and see Him face to face must turn away from self-seeking, unholy interests. They must “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). Believers are called to become like God in His holiness (Ephesians 1:4).
The apostle Peter instructed believers to “live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, ‘You must be holy because I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:14–16, NLT). Without a lifelong endeavor toward personal holiness, no one will see the Lord.
God must discipline willfully disobedient children who live to please themselves. Throughout Scripture, God appeals to His people to work at cultivating holiness: “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life” (1 Thessalonians 4:7–8).
The declaration without holiness no one will see the Lord reflects a sense of the author’s anticipation of seeing Christ at His return (see 1 John 3:2). This is the culminating point of the broader passage (Hebrews 12:22–29). If our ultimate goal is to be like Christ and see Him when He returns, our practical daily pursuit must be toward complete purity of thought and lifestyle.
We are the temple of the living God (2 Corinthians 6:14–18). In light of this revelation, the apostle Paul urged, “Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God” (2 Corinthians 7:1, NLT). Paul told Timothy, “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work” (2 Timothy 2:21, ESV).
We find a parallel idea to “without holiness no one will see the Lord” in these words from Paul: “For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God” (Ephesians 5:5). Of the future, glorious New Jerusalem, the apostle John said, “Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 21:27).
It’s vital to understand that, as the Lord’s redeemed people, we are made holy through Christ’s finished work, the offering of His body on the cross (Hebrews 10:10, 14; Ephesians 1:4; 1 Corinthians 1:2). We are saved by Jesus “to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began” (2 Timothy 1:9, ESV). “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5, NLT).
Sanctification is based on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the ongoing work of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Colossians 1:22; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; John 3:5–8; 1 Corinthians 6:11). Motivated by the knowledge that “without holiness no one will see the Lord,” we continue going all-out for Christ, striving to put on our “new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy” (Ephesians 4:24, NLT).

Maar nou moet julle in alles heilig wees, soos God wat julle uitverkies het, heilig is. Want die Skrif sê: ‘Julle moet heilig wees, want Ek is heilig’” (1 Petrus 1:14–16). Sonder ’n lewenslange strewe na persoonlike heiligheid sal niemand die Here sien nie.
God moet opsetlik ongehoorsame kinders dissiplineer wat leef om hulleself te behaag. Regdeur die Skrif doen God ’n beroep op Sy mense om te werk aan die kweek van heiligheid: “Want God het ons nie geroep om onrein te wees nie, maar om heilig te wees” (1 Tessalonisense 4:7–8).
Die verklaring dat niemand sonder heiligheid die Here sal sien nie, weerspieël ’n gevoel van die outeur se verwagting om Christus met Sy wederkoms te sien (sien 1 Johannes 3:2). Dit is die hoogtepunt van die breër gedeelte (Hebreërs 12:22–29). Dit is noodsaaklik om te verstaan dat ons, as die Here se verloste mense, heilig gemaak word deur Christus se voltooide werk, die offer van Sy liggaam aan die kruis (Hebreërs 10:10, 14; Efesiërs 1:4; 1 Korintiërs 1:2). Ons word deur Jesus gered “tot ‘n heilige roeping, nie op grond van ons werke nie, maar op grond van sy eie voorneme en genade wat Hy ons van ewigheid af in Christus Jesus gegee het” (2 Timoteus 1:9). “Hy het ons gered, nie op grond van die geregtigheid wat ons gedoen het nie, maar op grond van sy barmhartigheid. Hy het ons sondes weggewas deur ons ‘n nuwe geboorte en ‘n nuwe lewe te gee deur die Heilige Gees” (Titus 3:5).
Heiligmaking is gebaseer op die dood en opstanding van Jesus Christus en die voortdurende werk van die inwonende Heilige Gees (Kolossense 1:22; 1 Tessalonisense 5:23; 2 Tessalonisense 2:13; Johannes 3:5–8; 1 Korintiërs 6:11). Gemotiveer deur die wete dat “sonder heiligheid niemand die Here sal sien nie,” gaan ons voort om alles in ons vermoë vir Christus te doen en daarna te streef om ons “nuwe natuur aan te trek, geskape om soos God te wees – waarlik regverdig en heilig” (Efesiërs 4:24).

Matthew 10:28 falls under a general body of instruction Jesus gave to His disciples before sending them out on a mission. The full verse states, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Or, as the ESV puts it, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” The same teaching is found in Luke 12:4–5.
As Christians, we can easily apply the message of Matthew 10:28. Like the early disciples, we are sent out to the unsaved world to share the gospel (Matthew 28:19–20; Romans 10:10–17). We also live in a world that’s increasingly hostile to Christianity, making us sheep among wolves (Matthew 10:16).
We need a “do not fear” reminder more than ever. The Cato Institute, citing a study by Open Doors USA, reports that Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world (www.cato.org/commentary/christianity-worlds-most-persecuted-religion-confirms-new-report, 3/7/22, accessed 5/10/23). In countries like Afghanistan, openly declaring one’s faith in Jesus is a death sentence. Even in religious countries like Nigeria, Christians are targeted by Islamic extremist groups. Mainstream America resents Christianity and Christian values. An American Christian can be canceled or lose a job for standing on biblical views of marriage and gender.
It is tempting to fear those who kill the body. After all, who wants to be persecuted? Who wants to lose their source of livelihood, their friends, their reputation, and even their lives? Compromise is easy in a postmodern world. The unspoken rule seems to be that you can practice Christianity just as long as you don’t swim against the tide of public opinion. However, being with Jesus requires going against the flow. We’re not of this world and shouldn’t be conformed to it (1 John 2:15–17; Romans 12:2).
Matthew 10:28 and the accompanying verses serve as a warning, a command, and an encouragement. We are to reserve our fear for God, the One in charge of life and death. We should also be encouraged because, even when facing persecution and death, our souls are ultimately in God’s hands. As people reconciled to God, this is good news (2 Corinthians 5:18–19; Romans 5:10–11; Colossians 1:20–23)!
Don’t be surprised that “those who kill the body” hate believers. In Matthew 10:24–25, Jesus said, “Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master. Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!” (NLT).
If Jesus was hated, His followers will be, too. People label Christians today as hateful, bigoted, rigid, and more for their stance on cultural issues that touch morality. And the gospel itself is offensive and foolish to some (1 Corinthians 1:18–21; Galatians 5:11). This helps us embrace Jesus’ command not to fear those who can kill the body.
Please note that Christians are not given leeway to develop a persecution complex or to be hateful. If persecution comes our way, it should never be because of our bad behavior. However, “it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian” (1 Peter 4:16, NLT). We need not fear the powers of the present world. Every knee will eventually bow to Christ (Philippians 2:10–11).

As Christene kan ons die boodskap van Matteus 10:28 maklik toepas. Soos die vroeë dissipels, word ons na die ongeredde wêreld gestuur om die evangelie te deel (Matteus 28:19-20; Romeine 10:10-17). Ons leef ook in ‘n wêreld wat toenemend vyandig teenoor die Christendom is, wat ons skape onder wolwe maak (Matteus 10:16).
Ons het meer as ooit ‘n “moenie vrees nie”-herinnering nodig. Die Cato Instituut, wat ‘n studie deur Open Doors USA aanhaal, berig dat die Christendom die mees vervolgde godsdiens ter wêreld is (www.cato.org/commentary/christianity-worlds-most-persecuted-religion-confirms-new-report, 3/7/22, verkry op 5/10/23). In lande soos Afghanistan is die openlike verklaring van jou geloof in Jesus ‘n doodsvonnis. Selfs in godsdienstige lande soos Nigerië word Christene geteiken deur Islamitiese ekstremistiese groepe. Hoofstroom-Amerika verafsku die Christendom en Christelike waardes. ‘n Amerikaanse Christen kan gekanselleer word of ‘n werk verloor omdat hy op Bybelse sienings oor die huwelik en geslag staan.
Dit is aanloklik om diegene te vrees wat die liggaam doodmaak. Wie wil immers vervolg word? Wie wil hul bron van lewensonderhoud, hul vriende, hul reputasie en selfs hul lewens verloor? Kompromie is maklik in ‘n postmoderne wêreld. Die onuitgesproke reël blyk te wees dat jy die Christendom kan beoefen solank jy nie teen die gety van die openbare mening swem nie. Om egter by Jesus te wees, vereis dat jy teen die stroom gaan. Ons is nie van hierdie wêreld nie en moet nie daaraan gelykvormig word nie (1 Johannes 2:15–17; Romeine 12:2).
Matteus 10:28 en die gepaardgaande verse dien as ‘n waarskuwing, ‘n bevel en ‘n aanmoediging. Ons moet ons vrees vir God bewaar, die Een wat in beheer is van lewe en dood. Ons moet ook aangemoedig word, want selfs wanneer ons vervolging en dood in die gesig staar, is ons siele uiteindelik in God se hande. As mense wat met God versoen is, is dit goeie nuus (2 Korintiërs 5:18–19; Romeine 5:10–11; Kolossense 1:20–23)!
Moenie verbaas wees dat “dié wat die liggaam doodmaak” gelowiges haat nie. In Matteus 10:24–25 het Jesus gesê: “’n Student is nie groter as sy leermeester nie, en ’n slaaf is nie groter as sy heer nie. Studente moet soos sy leermeester wees, en slawe moet soos sy heer wees. En aangesien ek, die heer van die huis, die owerste van die duiwels genoem is, sal die lede van my huis met nog erger name genoem word!” (NLT).
As Jesus gehaat is, sal sy volgelinge ook gehaat word. Mense bestempel Christene vandag as haatlik, bevooroordeeld, rigied, en meer vir hul standpunt oor kulturele kwessies wat moraliteit raak. En die evangelie self is aanstootlik en dwaas vir sommige (1 Korintiërs 1:18–21; Galasiërs 5:11). Dit help ons om Jesus se bevel te omhels om nie diegene te vrees wat die liggaam kan doodmaak nie.
Let asseblief daarop dat Christene nie ruimte gegun word om ’n vervolgingskompleks te ontwikkel of om haatlik te wees nie. Geestelike Ondersoek:
Om gesondheidsprobleme op te spoor voordat hulle ernstig raak, beveel dokters ‘n roetine fisiese ondersoek aan. Ons kan dieselfde doen vir ons geestelike gesondheid deur ‘n paar vrae te vra wat gewortel is in die groot gebod (Markus 12:30) waarna Jesus verwys het.
Het ek God lief met my hele hart omdat Hy my eerste liefgehad het ? Wat is sterker, my begeerte na aardse wins of die skatte wat myne is in Christus ? (Kol 3:1). Hy begeer dat sy vrede ons harte regeer.
Het ek God lief met my hele siel ? Luister ek na God wat vir my sê wie ek is ? Beweeg ek weg van selfgesentreerde begeertes ? Word ek meer medelydend, vriendelik, sagmoedig, nederig en geduldig ?
Het ek God lief met my hele verstand ? Fokus ek op my verhouding met Sy Seun of laat ek my gedagtes dwaal waarheen dit wil gaan ? Lei my gedagtes tot probleme of oplossings ? Tot eenheid of verdeeldheid ? Vergifnis of wraak ?
Het ek God lief met al my krag ? Is ek bereid om as swak beskou te word sodat God Sy krag namens my kan toon ? Vertrou ek op Hom om sterk te wees in Sy Gees ?
Soos ons die boodskap van Christus ryklik onder ons laat woon met alle wysheid, sal Hy ons toerus om mekaar op te bou soos ons geestelik fiks en nuttig vir Hom word.
Om geestelik fiks te wees, voed jou op God se Woord en oefen jou geloof.
Spiritual Examination:
To detect health problems before they become serious, doctors recommend a routine physical examination. We can do the same for our spiritual health by asking a few questions rooted in the great commandment (Mark 12:30) that Jesus referred to.
Do I love God with all my heart because He first loved me? Which is stronger, my desire for earthly gain or the treasures I have in Christ? (Col. 3:1). He desires that His peace rule our hearts.
Do I love God with all my soul? Am I listening to God tell me who I am? Am I moving away from self-centered desires? Am I becoming more compassionate, kind, gentle, humble, and patient?
Do I love God with all my mind? Am I focused on my relationship with His Son or am I letting my thoughts wander wherever they want to go? Are my thoughts leading to problems or solutions? To unity or division? Forgiveness or revenge?
Do I love God with all my strength? Am I willing to be considered weak so that God can show His strength on my behalf? Do I trust Him to be strong in His Spirit?
As we let the message of Christ dwell among us richly in all wisdom, He will equip us to build one another up as we become spiritually fit and useful to Him.
To be spiritually fit, feed on God’s Word and exercise your faith.

Why are social media platforms filled with videos of Americans complaining about grocery prices right now? Needless to say, those videos must be striking a chord, because some of them are receiving millions of views.
Government bureaucrats are telling us that the cost of food is only going up a few percentage points per year, but we can all see that is a load of nonsense. A trip to the grocery store has become an enormous expense, and this is especially true if you have kids to feed.
As I wrote about earlier this month, one survey found that in 25 percent of U.S. households at least one person is skipping meals so that there will be enough money to pay the bills. Sadly, we are being warned that the cost of groceries will go even higher in the months ahead.
Several years ago, I kept warning my readers over and over again that soon the cost of groceries would become very painful.
Without a doubt, that time has arrived.

The Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil control parallel timelines that move us from light to darkness or from Darkness to Light . Every Seal , Trumpet or Plaque of event will move us in a New Timeline in this Universe.
