What is gambling addiction and problem gambling?
Gambling problems can happen to anyone from any walk of life. Your gambling goes from a fun, harmless diversion to an unhealthy obsession with serious consequences. Whether you bet on sports, scratch cards, roulette, poker, or slots—in a casino, at the track, or online—a gambling problem can strain your relationships, interfere with work, and lead to financial disaster. You may even do things you never thought you would, like running up huge debts or even stealing money to gamble.

Gambling addiction—also known as pathological gambling, compulsive gambling or gambling disorder—is an impulse-control disorder. If you’re a compulsive gambler, you can’t control the impulse to gamble, even when it has negative consequences for you or your loved ones. You’ll gamble whether you’re up or down, broke or flush, and you’ll keep gambling regardless of the consequences—even when you know that the odds are against you or you can’t afford to lose.
Of course, you can also have a gambling problem without being totally out of control. Problem gambling is any gambling behavior that disrupts your life. If you’re preoccupied with gambling, spending more and more time and money on it, chasing losses, or gambling despite serious consequences in your life, you have a gambling problem.

A gambling addiction or problem is often associated with other behavior or mood disorders. Many problem gamblers also suffer with substance abuse issues, unmanaged ADHD, stress, depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. To overcome your gambling problems, you’ll also need to address these and any other underlying causes as well.
Although it may feel like you’re powerless to stop gambling, there are plenty of things you can do to overcome the problem, repair your relationships and finances, and finally regain control of your life.
The first step is to separate the myths from the facts about gambling problems:

Myth:
You have to gamble every day to be a problem gambler.
Fact:
A problem gambler may gamble frequently or infrequently. Gambling is a problem if it causes problems.
Myth:
Problem gambling is not really a problem if the gambler can afford it.
Fact:
Problems caused by excessive gambling are not just financial. Too much time spent on gambling can also lead to relationship and legal problems, job loss, mental health problems including depression and anxiety, and even suicide.
Myth:
Having a gambling problem is just a case of being weak-willed, irresponsible, or unintelligent.
Fact:
Gambling problems affect people of all levels of intelligence and all backgrounds. Previously responsible and strong-willed people are just as likely to develop a gambling problem as anyone else.
Myth:
Partners of compulsive gamblers often drive their loved ones to gamble.
Fact:
Compulsive gamblers often try to rationalize their behavior. Blaming others is one way to avoid taking responsibility for their actions, including what is needed to overcome the problem.
Myth:
If a problem gambler builds up a debt, you should help them take care of it.
Fact:
Quick fix solutions may appear to be the right thing to do. However, bailing the gambler out of debt may actually make matters worse by enabling their gambling problems to continue.
Myth:
A problem gambler spends lots of time in a casino, racetrack, or in-person venues.
Fact:
Online casinos and bookmakers are open all day, every day for anyone with a smartphone or computer. It’s much easier to just pick up your phone rather than travel to a race track, casino, betting shop, or a bookie. Online gambling can be especially appealing to a younger crowd
Myth:
Online gambling is less harmful than traditional gambling.
Fact:
Some research actually shows that internet gamblers may spend more money, engage in a wider variety of games, gamble more frequently, and play for longer periods of time than in-person gamblers.

Gambling addiction signs and symptoms
Gambling addiction is sometimes referred to as a “hidden illness” because there are no obvious physical signs or symptoms like there are in drug or alcohol addiction. Problem gamblers also typically deny or minimize the problem—even to themselves. However, you may have a gambling problem if you:

Feel the need to be secretive about your gambling. You might gamble in secret or lie about how much you gamble, feeling others won’t understand or that you will surprise them with a big win.
Have trouble controlling your gambling. Once you start gambling, can you walk away? Or are you compelled to gamble until you’ve spent your last dollar, upping your bets in a bid to win lost money back?

Gamble even when you don’t have the money. You may gamble until you’ve spent your last dollar, and then move on to money you don’t have—money to pay bills, credit cards, or things for your children. You may feel pushed to borrow, sell, or even steal things for gambling money.

Have family and friends worried about you. Denial keeps problem gambling going. If friends and family are worried, listen to them carefully. It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help. Many older gamblers are reluctant to reach out to their adult children if they’ve gambled away their inheritance, but it’s never too late to make changes for the better.

Causes and risk factors of compulsive gambling
Like other forms of addiction, compulsive gambling starts when you perform an activity that triggers a rush of pleasure in your brain, such as placing a bet on a football team’s success or an online casino game. Even if you don’t win big, you feel a temporary wave of excitement. Over time, you may feel an urge to chase more of that pleasurable feeling. However, as you build a tolerance to it, you need to gamble more and more to get the same level of enjoyment.
Some people are more likely than others to develop a gambling addiction. For instance, young men between the ages of 18 and 29 tend to gravitate to compulsive gambling habits. Life situations, such as struggling financially and living alone, also seem to be risk factors. Compulsive gambling is also more common in people whose parents have also faced addiction issues.

Mental disorders, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders, often occur alongside gambling addiction. Some research also links pathological gambling to personality disorders, including antisocial, borderline, and narcissistic personality disorders. Aside from personality disorders, specific personality traits—especially impulsivity—can be risk factors for pathological gambling.

Dobbelverslawing – ook bekend as patologiese dobbelary, kompulsiewe dobbelary of dobbelversteuring – is ‘n impulsbeheerversteuring.

Feit:
‘n Probleemdobbelaar kan gereeld of ongereeld dobbel. Dobbelary is ‘n probleem as dit probleme veroorsaak.
Mite:
Mite:
Feit:
Kompulsiewe dobbelaars probeer dikwels hul gedrag rasionaliseer.
Mite:
‘n Probleemdobbelaar spandeer baie tyd in ‘n kasino, renbaan of persoonlike lokale.
Feit:

Mite:
Aanlyn dobbelary is minder skadelik as tradisionele dobbelary.
Feit:

Dobbelverslawing word soms na verwys as ‘n “verborge siekte” omdat daar geen ooglopende fisiese tekens of simptome is soos by dwelm- of alkoholverslawing nie. Jy kan egter ‘n dobbelprobleem hê as jy:

Bible Verse and Prayer for Today

7 Verses and Prayers for the Gambling Problem

  1. People with a gambling problem
“It happens so regularly that it’s predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up…I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. Is there no one who can do anything for me? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does.” Romans 7:21-25 (The Message)

Father, we intercede for individuals and their families who are struggling with the consequences of a gambling addiction: financial problems, relationship breakdown, mental health issues and tragically, one suicide every day. May many find You, the one source of freedom, forgiveness and comfort, for deliverance from their pain and desperation. In Your mercy. Amen and Amen.

  1. The gambling industry
“Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but helping the poor honours him.” Proverbs 14:31 (NLT)

God, we pray for a compulsory levy on this industry with its £15 billion annual profits to support people affected by gambling harms, improved staff training and ethical policies to dissuade people from betting recklessly. We ask for tighter controls on advertising on the media and at the many events that gambling companies sponsor, at venues and on players’ kit. Your will be done. Amen and Amen .

  1. Staying Free
“A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.” Proverbs 25:28 (NLT)

Lord, please strengthen those who have recovered from a gambling problem. May they continue to resist any temptation to go back to it, finding good support for lasting recovery from the financial, health, relationship and employment losses that this addiction cost them, and by using blocking software and self-exclusion schemes such as ‘Gamstop’. By Your saving grace. Amen and Amen.

  1. Online Gambling
“For the love of money [that is, the greedy desire for it and the willingness to gain it unethically] is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:10 (Amplified Bible)

Father, we remember the additional risks of gambling online, with over 2,400 UK online sites generating about £7 billion: the anonymity, secrecy, lack of accountability, unchecked spending, inducements to bet irresponsibly and fraudulent operators. We pray for much stronger legislation requiring robust age verification and other effective protective measures. In Jesus’ name. Amen and Amen.

  1. High-street betting establishments
“Do not rob the poor because they are poor or crush the afflicted at the gate, for the Lord pleads their cause.” Proverbs 22:22-23 (NRSV)

God of justice, we pray for wise national and local government decisions about the disgraceful situation, with Britain’s thousands of betting shops and hundreds of arcades, casinos, bingo halls and casinos being ten times more likely to be in economically deprived areas, targeting people who can ill afford to gamble. May justice, wisdom and compassion prevail. In Jesus’ name. Amen and Amen.

  1. Children at Risk
“Keep your life free from love of money and be content with what you have.” Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

Lord, we lift to You the increasing number of children and young people who are gambling with scratch cards, lottery tickets, private bets with friends, in betting establishments, online and in video games paying to open ‘loot boxes’ that offer them a chance to win. Please enable them to recognize the danger of becoming addicted and turn to what is truly valuable and satisfying. For Jesus’ sake. Amen and Amen.

  1. Help for problem gamblers and their families
“Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter…Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, ‘How can I help?'” Romans 15:1 (The Message)

Father, thank You for all who work with the network of organisations that make up the National Gambling Treatment Service, and others who are reaching out to vulnerable adults and children at risk and the 430,000 people who are already ensnared by what is now recognised as a serious mental health issue. In Christ’s name. Amen and Amen.

Bybel Vers en Gebed vir Vandag

7 Verse en Gebede vir die Dobbel Probleem

In U genade. Amen en Amen.

Laat u wil geskied. Amen en Amen.

  1. Vry Bly
“‘n Persoon sonder selfbeheersing is soos ‘n stad met afgebreekte mure.” Spreuke 25:28 (NLT)

In Jesus se Naam. Amen en Amen.

In Jesus se naam. Amen en Amen.

  1. Kinders in gevaar

In Christus se naam. Amen en Amen.

Bible Teaching of the Day

The Bible does not specifically condemn games of chance, gambling, betting, or the lottery. The Bible does warn us, however, against the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5). Wisdom avoids short cuts to prosperity: “Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time” (Proverbs 13:11, NLT). We are to work hard and earn a living (2 Thessalonians 3:10; Proverbs 14:23). Most gambling is motivated by a love of money. People place bets with the hope of quick and easy riches. Materialism is at the root of gambling.

The Bible mentions events of “luck” or “chance” in contexts other than gambling or betting. For example, casting lots was God’s prescribed method of choosing between the sacrificial goat and the scapegoat (Leviticus 16:8). Joshua cast lots to determine the allotment of land to the various tribes, and the results were accepted as God’s will (Joshua 18:10). Nehemiah cast lots to determine who would live inside the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 11:1). The apostles cast lots to determine the replacement for Judas (Acts 1:26). Each of these occasions proved the truth of Proverbs 16:33, which says, “The lot is cast in the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” None of these instances of casting lots have to do with betting or the transfer of goods. The apostles’ casting lots in Acts 1 is no justification for playing craps in Vegas.

One infamous scene of gambling occurred at the foot of Jesus’ cross. Scripture makes note of the Roman soldiers’ callous game of chance: “After they had nailed him to the cross, the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice” (Matthew 27:35, NLT). This was materialism at its most brazen—they occupied themselves with a little piece of this world as they turned their backs on the one who offered them heaven.

Gambling, by nature, takes advantage of the misfortune of others. In order for one person to win, someone else—usually multiple others—must lose. For a Christian to risk money in the off chance that he will gain even more is foolish. But to actively seek financial benefit from someone else’s loss is beyond foolish; it is unethical.

Casinos use all sorts of marketing schemes to entice gamblers to risk as much money as possible. They often offer inexpensive or even free alcohol, which encourages drunkenness—and a decreased ability to make good decisions. Everything in a casino is designed to appeal to materialistic desires. Even in those games that require a certain amount of skill and do not rely solely on luck, the gambler is seeking to benefit from the misfortune of others and playing into a rigged system. The aim of a casino is to take money in large sums and give little in return.

Sports betting is becoming more popular—and more accessible—by the day. Some argue in its defense, saying that sports betting is harmless entertainment. Some say that betting on a team, especially if it’s a fantasy team, requires some research and skill to be successful. Critics point out that gambling of any kind can lead to addiction. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, about 5 million Americans can be classified as compulsive gamblers (www.addictionhelp.com/gambling/statistics, accessed 5/20/25). And critics point out that sports betting can easily harm the integrity of the sport in question, when players are bribed to shave points or throw a game. So, there are several ethical and moral concerns with sports betting.

State and national lotteries are another form of gambling. Lotteries tempt people with the possibility of quick riches and are marketed as a way to fund education and/or social programs. However, it seems that those the lottery is supposed to help are actually being hurt. A recent study showed that U.S. households in the lowest income bracket spend 13 percent of their annual household income on lottery tickets; in contrast, the highest earners spend just 1 percent of their income on the lottery (Bankrate survey, October 2019). So, those who can least afford to spend money on lottery tickets are often the ones buying them. With the chances of winning the lottery being infinitesimal, the whole system preys upon the poor.

First Timothy 6:10 provides wisdom that directly relates to gambling: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” Greed is equated with idolatry in Colossians 3:5. Those who gamble cannot follow the admonition of Hebrews 13:5: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” Serving God and serving money are incompatible (Matthew 6:24).

Does the Bible forbid a friendly wager between two players going head-to-head on a tennis court? What about paying a dime into the kitty for a bingo card? Entering a raffle? Filling out a March Madness bracket in the office pool? The answer is, no, the Bible does not explicitly forbid these things. When it comes to betting of any kind, followers of Jesus should use discernment in examining their motives, their testimony, and their responsibility to steward their resources wisely.

Today’s Devotional

what does the bible say?

The Bible does not explicitly label gambling as a sin, but it strongly warns against the love of money, idolatry, and irresponsible stewardship. Scripture encourages earning money through hard work, avoiding debt, and being generous rather than chasing quick wealth. Trusting in luck or fortune, as seen in Isaiah, is equated with idolatry and rebellion against God. Jesus and the apostles emphasize generosity, contentment, and reliance on God for our needs. Given the greed, recklessness, and harm often linked to gambling, it is wise to avoid it as a spiritually harmful practice.

from the old testament
Even though individuals work and earn money, God is the ultimate source of our income: “You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:18).
The book of Proverbs has much to say on wise behavior concerning money. Proverbs 14:23 makes it clear that money is to be gained through work and labor: “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty,” and “Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty” (Proverbs 28:19).

The Bible warns against debt and owing any creditor large amounts of money: “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender” (Proverbs 22:7) and instead encourages hard work: “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest” (Proverbs 6:6-8).
The Bible also promotes generosity with one’s wealth: “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered” (Proverbs 11:25).
In Isaiah 65:11-12, God condemns those who forsake Him and instead “set a table” for Fortune and fill cups for Destiny—meaning they worship idols of luck and fortune rather than trusting Him. This rebellion led to severe judgment because they ignored God’s call and chose what displeased Him.

from the new testament
In Jesus’ parable about the sower, He warns how the desire for money can thwart the pursuit of true riches: “And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature” (Luke 8:14).
Jesus simply said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).
Paul said, “Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8). It is unwise to be indebted as a result of reckless gambling—our focus should not be on money, but on loving each other.
In 1 Corinthians 4:7, Paul simply asks his readers: “What do you have that you did not receive?” We should not let our pride be puffed up because of our riches, including riches that were won as a result of gambling.
The Bible says that we should ultimately trust in God to supply our needs (Philippians 4:19). We should do this as opposed to seeking get-rich-quick schemes that promise wealth, such as many forms of gambling.
The love of money “is a root of all kinds of evils” (1 Timothy 6:9-10).
implications for today

Today, gambling takes a variety of forms: lotteries, casinos, sports betting, quick-stop gaming stands, and perhaps the most prevalent, online or internet gambling. Down through history, key figures in Christianity have held an unfavorable view of gambling. Martin Luther proclaimed, “Money won by gambling is not won without sin and self-seeking sin” and John Calvin outlawed gambling in the city of Geneva. It is easy to conclude that Christian leaders condemned gambling because of the greed, laziness, recklessness, and wrongdoing to others that is so often tied to gambling. gambling often entices people to place their hope in chance and luck rather than in God’s faithful provision, echoing the idolatry condemned in Scripture (Isaiah 65:11). Historically, Christian leaders rejected gambling not only because of the obvious greed and selfishness it promotes but also because it undermines the biblical ethic of work and responsible stewardship (Proverbs 6:6-8). Gambling can foster a false sense of entitlement and encourage reliance on quick, unearned wealth instead of cultivating patience, diligence, and generosity—virtues deeply rooted in the Christian faith. When we understand these spiritual dangers alongside the real-world consequences—such as addiction and exploitation—it becomes clear why gambling conflicts with a life shaped by Christ’s values. Therefore, avoiding gambling helps protect both our spiritual health and our witness to a world desperate for faithful, trustworthy examples. It would be far better for us to trust in God for our wealth, working hard and in godly ways that honor Him.

Laat Jou Begeertes Herstel:

Let Your Desires Be Restored:

It is so easy to desire and want more than you really need and even to focus more on receiving than on giving. Before we know it, our desires will determine our choices and actions.
When the apostle Paul wrote to the followers of Jesus in Philippians, he said: I have learned, in whatever circumstances I am, to be content. I know … both to be abounding and to suffer need (Philippians 4:11,12). Paul was, in effect, saying: I have restored my desire. But note: Paul was not born content; he learned it through the difficult circumstances he experienced daily.
During this time of year, when shopping is often the order of the day in so many countries and cultures, why not choose to focus on being content in our current circumstances? This may sound difficult to you, but Paul, when he spoke about contentment, said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Help us, Lord, to be content when life is difficult. Protect us from the lie that if we have more, we will be happy. May we be content with what You have given us.

Contentment comes when we have fewer desires!

Bible Prophecy in the News

Use a Nuke to Stop Israel !! Spanish Prime Minister Threatens to Nuke Israel.

Spanish PM sparks uproar after hinting nuclear arsenal could stop Israel’s war on Hamas.

Spain’s prime minister lamented this week his country’s lack of a nuclear arsenal and a large aircraft carrier fleet, suggesting that were Spain able to, it would use military force to intervene against Israel in the war in Gaza.

On Thursday, Spanish media outlets published comments made by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during a press conference on Monday, when he announced a sweeping arms embargo on Israel along with restrictions on trade.

In the comments published on Thursday, Sanchez suggested he would use military force to prevent Israel from continuing its war in the Gaza Strip, blaming Spain’s limited military capacity and lack of nuclear weapons for the limited measures taken against Israel.

In comments not initially published widely, Sanchez accused Israel of committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip and said Spain’s ability to intervene on behalf of the Palestinians against Israel was constrained by its operational limitations.

Spain, said Sanchez, is doing what it can to “stop the genocide in Gaza, pursue its perpetrators, and support the Palestinian population.”

However, he added that “Spain, as you know, doesn’t have nuclear bombs, nor aircraft carriers, nor large oil reserves.”

“We alone can’t stop the Israeli offensive. But that doesn’t mean we won’t stop trying, because there are causes that are worth fighting for, even if winning them isn’t in our sole power,” he said.

The comments drew sharp criticism both in Spain and abroad, with critics calling it a thinly veiled threat to attack Israel.

Santiago Abascal, chief of the right-wing Vox party, said that Sanchez “would like to have nuclear weapons…but not to defend Spain. To defend Hamas.”

A spokesman for the Popular Party wondered openly whether Sanchez plans to drop “a nuclear bomb on Tel Aviv. Is that what he intends to do?”

On Thursday, the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) blasted Sanchez over the comments and called for an investigation to probe whether the remarks constituted incitement to genocide against Israelis.

“These disgusting and inflammatory comments have violently ripped off the mask of Prime Minister Sanchez, who claims to be acting on behalf of humanitarian intentions when his secret desire appears to be militarily attacking Israel, even with the use of weapons of mass destruction,” CAM CEO Sacha Roytman Dratwa said.

“PM Sanchez now joins an unenviable club of those who have wistfully aspired to use nuclear weapons against Israel, which includes Palestinian Authority senior official Jibril Rajoub, who said that ‘if we had nuclear weapons, we’d be using them,’ and a former Iranian president who said, ‘Israel is a one-bomb country.’”

“These comments are nothing short of an aspiration to genocide and will be used as a dog whistle to extremists around the region who dream of the absolute destruction of Israel, using any means possible,” Dratwa said. “Prime Minister Sánchez needs to immediately take back these murderous words, apologize unreservedly and pray that his words will not inspire further bloodshed, or international legal courts and authorities should explore charging him with incitement to genocide.”

Gog and Magog Update

a Gog and Magog Meeting ?
Qatar to hold emergency Arab-Islamic summit after IDF strike.

Qatar will host an emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha on Sept. 14-15 in the wake of Israel’s attack that targeted Hamas’s leadership in the city, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing the Qatar News Agency.

“There is a response that will happen from the region. This response is currently under consultation and discussion with other partners in the region,” Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said in an interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson on Wednesday.

The participants will decide on a course of action, he said.

“We are hoping for something meaningful that deters Israel from continuing this bullying,” Mohammed added.

United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan flew to Doha on Wednesday to express his country’s solidarity, the BBC reported.

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is expected to arrive in Doha on Thursday. The BBC cited him as saying that Israel’s “brutal aggression” required a response.

Qatari officials have remained tight-lipped about the fate of the Hamas leadership, which convened in Doha to discuss the latest Washington offer to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.

Qatar’s interior ministry identified the bodies of three of the five lower-level Hamas members, all confirmed dead by Hamas, along with that of a Qatari security officer, who were present at the site.

The terrorist group stated that Israel failed to kill its top members.

Qatari authorities were still searching for the two other lower-level terrorists, according to the BBC.

“The Ministry of Interior announces that the funeral prayer for the martyrs of the Israeli targeting … will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque, and they will be buried in the Mesaimeer Cemetery,” the ministry tweeted on Thursday.
