In Romans 1, Paul addresses the Gentile believers at Rome and begins by explaining his mission, which was to preach the gospel to everyone. He concludes his explanation by saying, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith’” (Romans 1:16–17; cf. Habakkuk 2:4).

The word translated “ashamed” means “disgraced” or “personally humiliated.” A person “ashamed” in this way is like someone singled out for misplacing his confidence—he trusted in something, and that something let him down. The word can refer to being dishonored because of forming the wrong alliances. So, when Paul says that he is not ashamed of the gospel, he is saying his confidence in the gospel is not misplaced. There is no disgrace in declaring it. Paul had given his life to proclaiming the truths that Jesus Himself had revealed to him (Acts 9:3–6; 2 Corinthians 12:2–4). He explained to the Romans why he did not believe that he had wrongly identified with Jesus and why proclaiming Jesus’ message was his life’s work.

The application can extend to us as well. Just as Paul placed his confidence in the gospel of Christ, so can we. We can proclaim with boldness the truths that God has revealed in His Word, with no fear that our confidence is misplaced. “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame” (Romans 10:11; cf. Isaiah 28:16). We can rest in the knowledge that the Holy Spirit who inspired the writing of Scripture never changes (2 Peter 1:21; Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8). What was true thousands of years ago is still true. The offer of salvation that was presented to people of the first century is still open to us (Acts 2:39; John 17:20).

To live unashamed of the gospel means we proclaim it, but it also means we apply it to our lives and show we believe it. Paul’s life choices supported his message. He did not preach one thing and live another. We are “ashamed of the gospel” when we allow sin in our lives to go unchecked (Matthew 3:8). When we indulge in worldliness and carnal desires or blatantly disobey scriptural standards, we indicate that we lack confidence in our own message (1 Corinthians 3:3; 1 Peter 2:11). When we “walk in the counsel of the ungodly, stand in the path of sinners, and sit in the seat of scoffers” (Psalm 1:1), we are being ashamed of the gospel. We are not allowing its truth to penetrate our lives so that others see its changing power. To live unashamed of the gospel means that we, like Paul, allow it to dominate our lives to the extent that everyone within our sphere of influence can see that we have “been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).

We often look at the swift and dramatic discipline and punishment God used with his people in the Old Testament and are struck by its severity. The Holy Spirit reminds us that while this was true, to spurn grace and ridicule the sacrificial death of Jesus are actions all the more worthy of God’s punishment. Grace is incredible. It is marvelous. But to reject Jesus and all he did to bring us God’s love and salvation is to court disaster and reject any source of grace. Rejecting Jesus has harsh consequences, so please, dear friend, don’t! Please don’t reject God’s offer of love, mercy, grace, hope, and salvation in Jesus. As the apostle Peter said while inspired by the Holy Spirit:

Holy and righteous Father, thank you for your costly gift of grace. Please empower me to be a transmitter and sharer of that grace to others. Please bless me with the ability to share the message of Jesus in all its loveliness so others can know your salvation and not have to face your justice after having spurned your gracious gift to them in Jesus, in whose name I pray and plead. Jesus anticipated that His followers would sometimes be tempted to feel ashamed of the gospel. That is why He warned, “If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels” (Luke 9:26, NLT; see also Mark 8:38). Paul, through his ministry as an apostle of Jesus Christ, had apprehended a vital truth that produced in him radical hope and confidence in the message of the gospel: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16, KJV).

The good news that Jesus came to sacrifice His life to save us from our sins is the gospel. This message is, in fact, the mighty power of God because it is the only message that brings forgiveness and eternal salvation to everyone who believes it. When Paul said, “I am not ashamed of the gospel,” he expressed the highest degree of confidence in it. He had come to believe that the gospel could be fully trusted.

Anyone who wholeheartedly believes and embraces the gospel message ultimately will not be disappointed, and therefore, those who proclaim it ought never to feel disgraced or embarrassed because of it. Paul urged his pastoral protégé, Timothy, “So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News” (2 Timothy 1:8, NLT).

The original Greek word translated as “power” in Romans 1:16 is dynamis. It is frequently used in the New Testament to speak of Christ’s miraculous works (see Matthew 7:22; 11:20; Mark 6:2). Paul applied the term to God’s ability to deliver people from sin, death, future judgment, and eternal separation from God. He told the Corinthians, “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18, NLT; see also 1 Corinthians 1:24).

The gospel is the power of God because it transforms lives (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 6:4; Hebrews 4:12). It saves people from the penalty and power of sin and gives them a new life filled with joy, peace, and the hope of eternal life with God (Romans 8:1–2). This saving work is initiated by God and carried out by His power (Romans 5:15–17; 8:10–11; 2 Corinthians 3:18).

Paul also explains that the gospel is the power of God because “in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith’” (Romans 1:17). The gospel reveals how God makes believers right in His sight and restores them to eternal fellowship with Himself: “We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ” (Romans 3:22, NLT). Jesus saves us “not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior” (Titus 3:5–6, NLT). Salvation is God’s work, and it is accomplished by His power and not our own.

When Christ died on the cross, God revealed His righteousness by punishing sin (Romans 3:23–26). Believers are “made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ” who “certainly save[s] us from God’s condemnation” (Romans 5:9, NLT). When Christ was resurrected to life, God revealed His righteousness by making salvation available to every sinner who places his or her faith in Jesus (Romans 4:22–24; 10:4; Galatians 3:24; Philippians 3:9; Genesis 15:6).

Through the gospel, God’s saving power is made available to everyone who believes (John 3:16; Romans 3:22–23; 4:4–5; Galatians 3:6–9). The power of the gospel proceeds from its core—the person of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:24).

The world is hostile to the gospel (Colossians 1:21; James 4:4). The nature of the gospel is unimpressive to those who are worldly wise (1 Corinthians 1:18–25) and offensive to the carnal-minded (Romans 8:7). But those who believe it, live it, and proclaim it, know that the gospel is the supreme power of God Himself directed toward the salvation of humanity.

Within the gospel of Jesus Christ is the power to create light and give life to the world (see Genesis 1:3; cf. John 1:1–4; 8:12). For this reason, believers can unashamedly say like Paul, “We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.

Today’s Devotional

Romans 9:33 says, “As it is written: ‘See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.’” In this passage, the apostle Paul begins by expressing his anguish over the Jews who reject Christ. In verses 30–33, he shows us why. Instead of accepting God’s righteousness by faith, they attempt to earn righteousness through their own works, causing them to stumble over the stumbling stone, which is Christ (verse 33).

In contrast, Paul declares that those who believe in Christ will not be put to shame. The statement is presented as a matter of fact and can be seen as a promise. It signifies that those who trust in Christ for eternal life and are declared righteous by faith will never experience disappointment or disgrace at the end. They will not be ashamed. This assurance in Christ motivates us to remain in Him, unlike pursuing a works-based righteousness, where our confidence relies on our own abilities.

Scripture gives us certainty that whoever believes in Jesus will not be put to shame, and it points to the monumental event of the resurrection. In another of his letters, Paul argues that Christianity would be false if Christ’s resurrection never occurred, and our hope would be in vain (1 Corinthians 15:12–20). Evidence for the resurrection abounds, including the conversion of Paul, the radical transformation of the disciples, their willingness to suffer for what they claimed to have seen, and their credible eyewitness testimony.

Our faith in Christ is never misplaced. Those who trust in Him will not be put to shame, for He has won the victory over death and the grave (Revelation 1:18). But various factors can sometimes shake our confidence. These include our own sins and even our lack of spiritual growth. It is easy to lose assurance of salvation after a major failure, and sometimes we make the mistake of the unbelieving Jews in Romans 9, placing hope in our good deeds rather than Christ’s perfect work.

Christians at all stages of spiritual development must be reminded that our hope is firmly anchored in Christ:
In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

Our response to having a secure foundation in Christ should be one of gratitude. Knowing that we will not be put to shame provides motivation to live for God every day in every circumstance. This security doesn’t give us a license to sin but rather empowers us to freely obey God without fear of condemnation from the law.

This security should also motivate us to evangelize the lost. Christ is not just our hope; He is the hope of everyone else as well. It is our responsibility to point others to Christ through our words and actions. Our prayer is that they may not stumble over the Stumbling Stone but instead discover true, life-giving hope.

Ons reaksie op ‘n veilige fondament in Christus moet een van dankbaarheid wees. Om te weet dat ons nie beskaamd sal word nie, bied motivering om elke dag in elke omstandigheid vir God te leef. Hierdie sekuriteit gee ons nie ‘n lisensie om te sondig nie, maar bemagtig ons eerder om God vrylik te gehoorsaam sonder vrees vir veroordeling deur die wet.

Hierdie sekuriteit moet ons ook motiveer om die verlorenes te evangeliseer. Christus is nie net ons hoop nie; Hy is ook die hoop van almal anders. Dit is ons verantwoordelikheid om ander na Christus te wys deur ons woorde en dade. Ons gebed is dat hulle nie oor die Steen van Struikel sal struikel nie, maar eerder ware, lewegewende hoop sal ontdek.

Die Vallei Van Visie:

Die vallei van visie spreek van die afstand tussen ‘n sondige man en sy heilige God. Die man sê vir God: U het my na die vallei van visie gebring, omring deur berge van sonde. Ek aanskou U heerlikheid. Bewus van sy oortredings, het die man steeds hoop. Hy gaan voort. Sterre kan gesien word vanuit die diepste punte, en hoe dieper die punte, hoe helderder skyn U sterre. Laastens eindig die gedig met ‘n versoek. Laat my U lig in my duisternis vind. U heerlikheid in my vallei.
Jona het God se heerlikheid gevind gedurende sy tyd in die oseaan dieptes. Hy het teen God in opstand gekom en in ‘n vis se maag beland, oorweldig deur sy sonde. Daar het Jona tot God geroep. U het my in die dieptes gewerp. Die waters het my omring, tot in my siel (Jona 2:3,5). Ten spyte van sy situasie het Jona gesê: Ek het aan U gedink, Here, en my gebed het tot U opgestyg. God het sy gebed verhoor en die vis laat bevry. Alhoewel sonde afstand tussen God en ons skep, kan ons opkyk vanaf die laagste punte in ons lewens en Hom sien. Sy heiligheid, goedheid en genade. As ons van ons sonde wegdraai en dit aan God bely, sal Hy ons vergewe. God verhoor gebede uit die vallei.

Die duisternis van sonde laat die lig van God se genade net helderder skyn.

The Valley of Vision speaks of the distance between a sinful man and his holy God. The man says to God: You have brought me to the valley of vision, surrounded by mountains of sin. I behold Your glory. Aware of his transgressions, the man still has hope. He continues. Stars can be seen from the deepest points, and the deeper the points, the brighter Your stars shine. Finally, the poem ends with a request. Let me find Your light in my darkness. Your glory in my valley.
Jonah found God’s glory during his time in the depths of the ocean. He rebelled against God and ended up in the belly of a fish, overwhelmed by his sin. There Jonah cried out to God. You threw me into the depths. The waters surrounded me, even to my soul (Jonah 2:3,5). Despite his situation, Jonah said: I remembered You, O Lord, and my prayer ascended to You. God answered his prayer and set the fish free. Although sin creates distance between God and us, we can look up from the lowest points in our lives and see Him. His holiness, goodness, and grace. If we turn from our sin and confess it to God, He will forgive us. God answers prayers from the valley.

The darkness of sin only makes the light of God’s grace shine brighter.

Jordanian king: ‘Nobody’ will enforce Gaza ceasefire militarily

In an interview with the BBC, Jordan’s King Abdullah II stressed that Jordan and other regional powers supporting the Trump-brokered ceasefire in Gaza would not send troops to disarm or fight Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The monarch said he was speaking on behalf of all international powers that may be asked to carry out a peacekeeping mission in Gaza, insisting that no countries view ensuring the stability of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas through military means as part of their obligations.

“Peacekeeping is that you’re sitting there supporting the local police force, the Palestinians, which Jordan and Egypt are willing to train in large numbers, but that takes time,” Abdullah told the BBC. “If we’re running around Gaza on patrol with weapons, that’s not a situation that any country would like to get involved in.”

He added that “enforcing” the ceasefire is something that “nobody will want to touch.”

Abdullah emphasized that no Jordanian soldiers would be deployed on the ground in Gaza, noting that due to Jordan’s large Palestinian population, his country was “too close politically” to send troops into the embattled enclave.

Syria demands Israel surrender entire Golan Heights

Despite progress earlier this year in security talks, Syria is now demanding Israel cede control of the Golan Heights.

The new Syrian regime is demanding Israel cede control over the entire Golan Heights, including territory held by the Jewish state since 1967 and home to some 25,000 Israeli Jews.

Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Israel and the new Syrian government have quietly negotiated a new security deal that would redefine the border between the two countries and put an end to the state of war that has lasted since Israel’s establishment 77 years ago.

Immediately after Assad’s ouster, Israel seized control over a demilitarized zone established in the eastern Golan Heights in 1974 – in territory ceded by Israel to Syria after the Yom Kippur War.

Israeli forces have also operated across southern Syria against terrorist groups, including Iranian-aligned militias and radical Sunni forces that have targeted Syria’s Druze minority.

Talks brokered by the Trump administration have sought to establish a mutually agreed-upon border between Israel and Syria, along with understandings regarding limits to Israel’s ability to operate in southern Syria, the establishment of an air corridor through Syria to Iran, and restrictions on Syrian military deployments near the Israeli frontier.

Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the talks have made significant progress while acknowledging that no deal is likely to be signed in the immediate future.

“We are maintaining contacts with the Syrians; there has been some progress, but it’s still a way off,” Netanyahu said.

Media reports at the time indicated that no major territorial changes were discussed in the talks, though Syria had sought Israel’s withdrawal from parts of the Golan occupied since December 2024.

On Friday, however, Syria publicly demanded Israel cede the entire strategic plateau, an area Israel annexed in 1981 and that is home to some 25,000 Israeli Jews and more than 20,000 Druze.

The first Trump administration recognized Israeli sovereignty over the area.

Despite this, Syria’s envoy to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, told the UN Security Council that Damascus is seeking a full Israeli withdrawal – including from the entire Golan Heights.

“Israeli authorities must withdraw their forces from Syrian territory, including the occupied Golan Heights, as well as from areas recently invaded, and refrain from interfering in Syria’s internal affairs,” Olabi said.

“The Golan will remain Arab and Syrian and will never be subject to compromise or concession. Syria reaffirms its unwavering position that the occupied Golan Heights is an integral part of its sovereign territory, a position rooted in international law and repeatedly endorsed in UN resolutions.”

Olabi demanded the Security Council pass a resolution to force Israel to cede the Golan, with four temporary Security Council member states seconding the demand, including Algeria, Somalia, Guyana, and Sierra Leone.
