The Love of Christ

The phrase “love of Christ,” as opposed to “love for Christ,” refers to the love that He has toward mankind. His love can be briefly stated as His willingness to act in our best interest, especially in meeting our greatest need, even though it cost Him everything and even though we were the least worthy of such love.

Though Christ Jesus, being God in nature, existed from the beginning of time with God the Father (John 1:1) and the Holy Spirit, He willingly left His throne (John 1:1-14) to become a man, that He might pay the penalty for our sin so that we would not have to pay for it for all eternity in the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15). Because mankind’s sin has been paid for by our sinless Savior Jesus Christ, God who is just and holy can now forgive our sins when we accept Christ Jesus’ payment as our own (Romans 3:21-26). Thus, Christ’s love is shown in His leaving His home in heaven, where He was worshiped and honored as He deserved, to come to earth as a man where He would be mocked, betrayed, beaten, and crucified on a cross to pay the penalty for our sin, rising again from the dead on the third day. He considered our need of a Savior from our sin and its penalty as more important than His own comfort and life (Philippians 2:3-8).

Sometimes people may give their lives willingly for ones they deem as worthy—a friend, a relative, other “good” people—but Christ’s love goes beyond that. Christ’s love extends to those most unworthy of it. He willingly took the punishment of those who tortured Him, hated Him, rebelled against Him, and cared nothing about Him, those who were most undeserving of His love (Romans 5:6-8). He gave the most He could give for those who deserved it the least! Sacrifice, then, is the essence of godly love, called agape love. This is God-like love, not man-like love (Matthew 5:43-48).

This love which He demonstrated toward us on the cross is just the beginning. When we place our trust in Him as our Savior, He makes us God’s children, co-heirs with Him! He comes to dwell within us through His Holy Spirit, promising that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6). Thus, we have a loving companion for life. And no matter what we go through, He is there, and His love is ever available to us (Romans 8:35). But as He rightfully reigns as a benevolent King in heaven, we need to give Him the position He deserves in our lives as well, that of Master and not merely companion. It is only then that we will experience life as He intended and live in the fullness of His love (John 10:10b).

Hy kom woon in ons deur Sy Heilige Gees en belowe dat Hy ons nooit sal verlaat of in die steek sal laat nie (Hebreërs 13:5-6). Dus het ons ‘n liefdevolle metgesel vir die lewe. En maak nie saak wat ons deurmaak nie, Hy is daar, en Sy liefde is altyd vir ons beskikbaar (Romeine 8:35). Do not Trust in Chariots and Horses

Psalm 20:7 is a well-known verse that demonstrates King David’s unwavering trust in God: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” During David’s era and beyond, chariots and horses were a measure of military strength. In more contemporary terms, the verse might be rendered “Some trust in their armed forces and nuclear weapons, but we trust in the name of the Lord.”

In ancient times, the strength of a kingdom was gauged by its possession of “chariots and horses.” Hence, it was customary for kings to put their trust in their military resources. For example, King Solomon bolstered his strength by amassing “chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem” (1 Kings 10:26). Pharaoh of Egypt and King Sennacherib of Assyria are other biblical examples of rulers with large armies. These two kings are especially significant as God showcased His supremacy over their military powers (Exodus 14:6–14; 2 Kings 19). Grasping the significance of “chariots and horses” adds depth to David’s words. Though a courageous warrior himself, David relied on the Lord to give him victory.

Although modern nations don’t depend on chariots and horses, and regular individuals lack access to military resources, the metaphorical implication of this verse holds true. It is still possible to fall into the trap of relying solely on human strength, material possessions, and intelligence. This is evident sometimes in elections of political candidates, when people might assume that a certain candidate or party will usher in a utopia, disregarding the God-factor (see Proverbs 21:1; Daniel 2:21; 4:17). The wealthy may rely on their billions, intellectuals on their brilliance, and the physically strong on their bulk. Humans have been geared toward self-rule right from the Garden of Eden, and even Christians aren’t immune (Genesis 3:4).

Given our inclination to play the role of our own gods, Psalm 20:7 should be both a challenge and a proclamation for believers. In challenging times when others might tap into their limited human resources, we have a heavenly Father to turn to for assistance (Psalm 18:2; 46:1; Hebrews 4:16). He is willing to grant us wisdom (James 1:5), guide us through our troubles (Isaiah 41:10; Psalm 23:4), and liberate us from all that would entangle (Psalm 34:17; Matthew 6:13; 2 Timothy 4:18).

We can extend the concept of trusting in chariots and horses to the matter of salvation. Various religions and belief systems advocate for salvation through good deeds and obedience to religious law. Even atheists and skeptics rely on their perceived goodness, hoping that, if God exists, their good deeds will suffice to secure salvation. However, Christianity is unique, as the gospel invites us to trust in the person and work of Christ. As Jesus Himself promised, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

In all aspects of life, may we unite with King David in professing our unwavering faith in God, refuse to be numbered with those who “trust in chariots and horses,” and pray for the grace to remain steadfast.

Social Justice

One of the most popular verses among both Jews and Christians promoting social justice is Micah 6:8. It reads, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Many desire to know more about what this inspiring verse teaches on the issues of justice, mercy, and humility.

Micah 6 involves an imaginary conversation between the Lord and Israel. In verses 1-5 the Lord introduces His case against the disobedient people of Israel. Verses 6-7 record Israel’s response as a series of questions beginning with, “With what shall I come to the Lord?” (Micah 6:6).

Israel’s focus is on their external religious rites, and their questions show a progression from lesser to greater. First, they ask if God would be satisfied with burnt offerings of year-old calves (Micah 6:6b), offerings required in the Law of Moses. Second, they ask if they should bring “thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil” (Micah 6:7a). This is the rhetoric of hyperbole; such an offering could only be made by someone extremely wealthy or by the larger community of God’s people. Third, they ask whether they should offer their firstborn sons as a sacrifice for God. Would that be enough to cover their sin? Would God be pleased with them then?

Verse 8 follows with God’s answer, rooted in the Law of Moses: “He has told you, O man, what is good.” In other words, Israel should already have known the answer to their questions. God then says that He did not need or desire their religious rites, sacrifices, or oblations. Instead, the Lord sought Israel’s justice, mercy, and humility.

The answer to Israel’s sin problem was not more numerous or more painful sacrifices. The answer was something much deeper than any religious observance: they needed a change of heart. Without the heart, Israel’s conformity to the Law was nothing more than hypocrisy. Other prophets tried to communicate a similar message (Isaiah 1:14; Hosea 6:6; Amos 5:21). Unfortunately, God’s people were slow to heed the message (Matthew 12:7).

“Act justly” would have been understood by Micah’s audience as living with a sense of right and wrong. In particular, the judicial courts had a responsibility to provide equity and protect the innocent. Injustice was a problem in Israel at that time (Micah 2:1-2; 3:1-3; 6:11).

“Love mercy” contains the Hebrew word hesed, which means “loyal love” or “loving-kindness.” Along with justice, Israel was to provide mercy. Both justice and mercy are foundational to God’s character (Psalm 89:14). God expected His people to show love to their fellow man and to be loyal in their love toward Him, just as He had been loyal to them (Micah 2:8-9; 3:10-11; 6:12).

“Walk humbly” is a description of the heart’s attitude toward God. God’s people depend on Him rather than their own abilities (Micah 2:3). Instead of taking pride in what we bring to God, we humbly recognize that no amount of personal sacrifice can replace a heart committed to justice and love. Israel’s rhetorical questions had a three-part progression, and verse 8 contains a similar progression. The response of a godly heart is outward (do justice), inward (love mercy), and upward (walk humbly).

The message of Micah is still pertinent today. Religious rites, no matter how extravagant, can never compensate for a lack of love (1 Corinthians 13:3). External compliance to rules is not as valuable in God’s eyes as a humble heart that simply does what is right. God’s people today will continue to desire justice, mercy, and humility before the Lord.

Everything That Is Precious:

I have seen people collect a lot of things. Boxes filled with items that were once precious, but are no longer of much value. And they are constantly looking for new items to add to the collection. And when they find something, their minds immediately wander to the next item and they start searching again.
Although we tend to collect and hoard a lot, few of those items are truly valuable and precious. And as time goes by, we discover that the most precious possessions in life are not material items. On the contrary, it is the people who have loved us and made an impact on our lives that are precious to us. When we sometimes find ourselves saying in our hearts, “What would I have done without him or her?” then we know that they are truly important and precious to us.
So when Peter speaks of Jesus as the living stone chosen by God for the place of honor ( 1 Pet 2:4 ), then I know that He is indeed precious to me. He is our most precious possession, more important than anything or anyone else. Where would we be today without Him and His presence, His guidance, His gracious patience, His comfort, and His loving correction?
Indeed, what would we do without Him? I can’t even imagine it.

Lord, help us not to focus on worldly things, but on You, our most precious possession. Teach us the joy of Your presence, so that we can appreciate You and Your precious provision.

Of all that is precious, Jesus is the most important. He is at the top of the list.

Sisera het sy stryd teen Israel verloor en het nou skuiling en skuiling gesoek. Jael het hom in haar tent genooi om weg te kruip en te rus. Terwyl hy geslaap het, het sy hom tereggestel.—Rigters 4:17-21.

Jael se optrede het ‘n profesie vervul wat deur Debora gespreek is: “Dit sal in die hand van ‘n vrou wees wat die HERE Sisera sal gee.” (Rigters 4:9) Vir haar rol is Jael geprys as die “mees geseënde van vroue.”—Rigters 5:24.

Wat kan ons by Jael leer? Jael het met inisiatief en moed opgetree. Haar ervaring toon hoe God gebeure kan maneuvreer om profesie te vervul.



Women in the Bible​—What Can We Learn From Them?

Today = Jael
Who was Jael? She was the wife of Heber, a non-Israelite. Jael took a fearless stand for God’s people.

What did she do? Jael acted decisively when Sisera, the chief of the Canaanite army, showed up in her camp. Sisera had lost his battle against Israel and was now looking for refuge and shelter. Jael invited him into her tent to hide and rest. While he was sleeping, she executed him.—Judges 4:17-21.

Jael’s action fulfilled a prophecy spoken by Deborah: “It will be into the hand of a woman that God will give Sisera.” (Judges 4:9) For her role, Jael was praised as the “most blessed of women.”—Judges 5:24.

What can we learn from Jael? Jael acted with initiative and courage. Her experience shows how God can maneuver events to fulfill prophecy.

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summary

The people of England were also seeking for a Bible in English
2.0 The urge for an English Bible
The urge to have their own Bible, has erupted into the biggest persecution in
the history of England. Besides this, God has made sure that certain people be
revived to capture His True Word on paper so that every nation could have their
own Bible. When darkness came upon the people, He provided the light. After all
He is the Light of Man john1.
2.1 The ‘Angle-Saxe’ Translation
The official Bible used by the Church of the day in England was the Latin –
Roman Vulgate, although the people spoke Engle Saxe, the common
language spoken by the majority of common people. Individuals attempted to
translate the Bible in Angle Saxe during the 8th century. One of these scribes was
Bishop Egbert that has translated the Evangelic books into Angle Saxe. Even King
Alfred translated the Ten Commandments, some of the psalms and bits and pieces
of the Old Testament.
The Bishop von Keutelburg, Stephen Langton was the man that has divided the
Vulgate into different books in the Bible during 1226. The principle was initially
unpopular, but was later accepted. This principle is even used in our modern day
bibles around the world.
2.2 The ‘Wycliffe’ Bible.
John Wycliffe was a traveling preacher during the pre-reform period in
England. He preached against the misconceptions of the Roman Catholic Church
and their misuse of the Vulgate to manipulate the people. His biggest protest was
that the church has withheld the Vulgate from the people. He then set out to
translate the Vulgate into English so that it can become a possession in every
household. He convinced two men, Hereford to assist him with the translation of
the Old Testament during 1382 and Purvey to assist him with the translation of the
New Testament during 1390. The Wycliffe Bible became the first complete English
Bible. It became very popular and progressively it was written over from Angle-
Saxe into the Standard English that we know today.
2.2.1 The Attitude of the Government.
In 1401 the government has banned the Wycliffe Bible and instructed that
all the Bibles be destroyed in a bonfire. Many people lost their lives when
they were burned with their bibles when they kept on reading from it.
During 1408, the Synod of Oxford prohibited any person from
translating any bible verse into English. They even went so far as to
through Hereford and Purvey into jail and to dig up the bones of Wycliffe
who has already passed away and burned his bones in revenge.

2.3 The ‘William Tyndale’ Translation
Tyndale is the biggest name in the history of the English Bible. He was the
first person that has attempted to translate the Bible from Hebrew and Greek
into English. He was especially inspired by the first printed copy of the
Hebrew Old Testament which saw the light in 1448 and the New Testament
printed in 1516. Unfortunately the reformation period affected him and was he
forced to complete his work outside of England. A London tradesman by the
name of Monmouth assisted him financially during 1524 and could he manage to
produce the first English New Testament Copy within a period of one year. He then
handed it to a printer that could reproduce the bible.

2.0 Bybelvertalings in Engeland
Die stryd om die Bybel in eie taal te bekom het seker die grootste vervolging in
Engeland meegebring. Tog kan niks die liggolwe van die onfeilbare Woord van God
keer nie. As lig deurbreek moet die duisternis wyk
2.1 Die ‘Angel-Saksiese’ Vertalings
Die Engelse volk het Angel-Saksies gepraat, maar die amptelik Bybel was die Roomse Latynse
Vulgaat. Enkelinge het hier en daar omskrywings in Angel-Saksies gemaak. Byvoorbeeld
biskop Egbert het die Evangelies in Anglo Saksies oorgesit in die 8ste eeu. In die laat 9de eeu
doen koning Alfred dieselfde met die tien gebooie, die Psalms en sekere Ou Testamentiese
gedeeltes. In 1226 het die Aartsbiskop van Keutelberg, Stephen Langton, die Vulgaat in
hoofstukke verdeel. Dit was nie beskou as baie geslaagd nie, maar tog word dit tot vandag toe
in alle Bybels gehandhaaf.
2.2 Die ‘Wycliffe’ Bybelvertaling
John Wycliffe was ‘n rondreisende prediker in die voor-Reformatoriese tyd in Engeland. Hy het
oral teen die skreiende misstande van die Roomse Kerk gepreek en was besonder besorg dat
die Vulgaat vir die gewone mens ‘n geslote boek was. Hy slaag daarin om twee manne te
inspireer om hom te help om die Vulgaat in Engels te vertaal. Hierdie twee manne was
Hereford wie gehelp het met die Ou Testament en Purvey wie gehelp het met die grootste
gedeelte van die Nuwe Testament. Die Wycliffe Bybel was dus die eerste volledige Bybel in
Engels, naamlik DIE NUWE TESTAMENT IN 1390 en DIE OU TESTAMENT 1382. Dit was
baie gewild en vele hand afskrifte word gemaak. Die skryftrant daaruit is tot vandag toe
standaard Engels. Hierdie vertaling bevat een Apokriewe boek, die sogenaamde brief van
Paulus aan die Laodisense.
2.2.1 Die gesindheid van ‘n regering
In 1401 tree daar ‘n geweldige teenkanting teen hierdie Bybel in, en die Parlement
proklameer ‘n wet dat elkeen van die Wycliffe Bybels verbrand moet word. Vele mense
sterf op brandstapels omdat hulle dit bly lees het. Die Sinode van Oxford van 1408,
verbied enige persoon om enige vertalings in Engels te maak. Twintig jaar na die
Wycliffe Bybel verskyn het, word die bene van Wycliffe opgegrawe en verbrand en in
die Swiftrivier gegooi terwyl Hereford en Purvey in die gevangenis gewerp word.
2.3 Die ‘William Tyndale’ Vertaling
Tyndale is die grootste naam in die geskiedenis van die Engelse Bybel. Hy was die eerste
persoon wat probeer het om die Bybel direk uit die Hebreeus en Grieks in Engels te vertaal. Hy
is in besonder aangespoor deur die verskyning van die eerste gedrukte Hebreeuse Ou
Testament in 1448 en die eerste gedrukte Griekse Nuwe Testament in 1516. Ongelukkig het
die hervorming nog baie min invloed in Engeland gehad en Tyndale moes sy werk buite
Engeland verrig. Met die hulp van ‘n Londense handelaar, Monmouth, is hy in 1524 na
Hamburg waar hy die Nuwe Testament binne ‘n jaar voltooi het en dit aan ‘n drukker in Keulen
oorhandig het.
