Bible Verse and Prayer for Today

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
—Romans 14:4

The apostle Paul warned early believers against passing judgment on other Christians in matters not central to the faith. He also reminded them of whose job it is to judge in these matters — the Lord. He also emphasized that the person on whom they passed judgment belonged to the Lord — that person was HIS servant. Paul then asked them (and us): What right does anyone have to pass judgment on a person for whom Christ died and who is also a servant who belongs to the Lord? (Romans 14:15; 1 Corinthians 8:11)
Unfortunately, the evil one makes it easy for us to find fault and pass judgment on others about something nonessential while never dealing with the obvious sin in our own lives. We must not judge other believers in matters that are not central to the faith. We will answer to God for our sin and our judgmentalism. Jesus warned that the harshness we use to judge others will be the harshness the Lord will use with us on judgment day (Matthew 7:2). That’s sobering, and a reminder to not judge each other.

PRAYER

Father, please forgive me. I confess that I have wrongly passed judgment on others when I had no right or authority to do so. I know Jesus died to redeem them and want to use them for your glory. I know you love them and have a plan for each of them. I know that I have things wrong in my own life. Please redeem my heart and use me to be an encouragement, never a stumbling block, to your precious, blood-bought children. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen and Amen

Bible Teaching of the Day

The phrase “dead to sin” comes from Romans 6:11: “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” Here, the contrast is made that to be “dead to sin” is to be “alive to God in Christ Jesus.” Those who have come to faith in Jesus are no longer to allow sin to control their lives. Instead, we offer ourselves to God to serve His purposes.

Paul expands on this concept in Romans 12:1-2: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” The phrase “living sacrifice” is a paradox—sacrifices do not “live”; they die. But it’s a good summation of the Christian life, as we are dead to sin and alive to God. The emphasis here is on living a different life as a result of God’s salvation. We no longer follow the pattern of the world but live according to God’s will.

To be dead to sin does not mean we are sinless. Paul made clear that he continued to struggle with temptation and sin: “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it” (Romans 7:19-20). If Paul could call himself the “worst of sinners” (1 Timothy 1:16), then we should certainly expect to continue our conflict with sin until we reach heaven.

To be dead to sin means we no longer need to be controlled by our sin nature. Romans 6:17 teaches that “though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.” Before Christ, we are “slaves” to sin. Now we have a new Master. Sin continues to exist, but we are no longer dominated by it.

Romans 6:1-2, “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” The idea that a person could “trust in Jesus Christ” for salvation and then go on living just as he/she lived before, is absolutely foreign to the Bible. Believers in Christ are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Holy Spirit changes us from producing the acts of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21) to producing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). The Christian life is a changed life because the Christian is changed.

What differentiates Christianity from every other religion is that Christianity is based on what God has done for us through Jesus Christ—divine accomplishment. Every other world religion is based on what we must do to earn God’s favor and forgiveness—human achievement. Every other religion teaches that we must do certain things and stop doing certain other things in order to earn God’s love and mercy. Christianity, faith in Christ, teaches that we do certain things and stop doing certain things because of what Christ has done for us.

How could anyone, having been delivered from sin’s penalty, eternity in hell, go back to living the same life that had him on the path to hell in the first place? How could anyone, having been cleansed from the defilement of sin, desire to go back to the same cesspool of depravity? How could anyone, knowing what Jesus Christ did on our behalf, go on living as if He were not important? How could anyone, realizing how much Christ suffered for our sins, continue sinning as if those sufferings were meaningless?

Romans 6:11-15 declares, “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!”

For the truly converted, then, continuing to live sinfully is not an option. Because our conversion resulted in a completely new nature, our desire is to no longer live in sin. Yes, we still sin, but instead of wallowing in it as we once did, we now hate it and wish to be delivered from it. The idea of “taking advantage” of Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf by continuing to live sinfully is unthinkable. Christians who have no desire to live for Christ, but instead find themselves living lives indistinguishable from those of unbelievers, should examine whether they have ever genuinely received Christ as Savior. “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” (2 Corinthians 13:5).



Vandag se Bemoediging

Romeine 6:1-2, “Wat moet ons dan sê? Sal ons aanhou sondig sodat die genade meer kan word? Nee, nie! Ons het die sonde afgesterf; hoe kan ons nog langer daarin lewe?” Die idee dat ‘n persoon op Jesus Christus kan “vertrou” vir verlossing en dan aanhou lewe net soos hy/sy voorheen geleef het, is absoluut vreemd aan die Bybel. Gelowiges in Christus is nuwe skepsels (2 Korintiërs 5:17). Die Heilige Gees verander ons van die dade van die vlees (Galasiërs 5:19-21) na die vrug van die Gees (Galasiërs 5:22-23). ​​Die Christelike lewe is ‘n veranderde lewe omdat die Christen verander is.

Wat die Christendom van elke ander godsdiens onderskei, is dat die Christendom gebaseer is op wat God vir ons gedoen het deur Jesus Christus – goddelike prestasie. Elke ander wêreldgodsdiens is gebaseer op wat ons moet doen om God se guns en vergifnis te verdien – menslike prestasie. Elke ander godsdiens leer dat ons sekere dinge moet doen en ophou om sekere ander dinge te doen om God se liefde en genade te verdien. Christenskap, geloof in Christus, leer dat ons sekere dinge doen en ophou om sekere dinge te doen as gevolg van wat Christus vir ons gedoen het.

Hoe kan enigiemand, nadat hy van die straf van sonde, die ewigheid in die hel, teruggaan na dieselfde lewe wat hom in die eerste plek op die pad na die hel gehad het? Hoe kan enigiemand, nadat hy van die besoedeling van sonde gereinig is, begeer om terug te gaan na dieselfde put van verdorwenheid? Hoe kan enigiemand, wetende wat Jesus Christus namens ons gedoen het, aanhou leef asof Hy nie belangrik is nie? Hoe kan enigiemand, wat besef hoeveel Christus vir ons sondes gely het, aanhou sondig asof daardie lyding betekenisloos is?

Romeine 6:11-15 verklaar: “Net so moet julle julleself as dood vir die sonde beskou, maar lewend vir God in Christus Jesus. Laat die sonde dan nie in julle sterflike liggaam heers sodat julle aan sy begeertes gehoorsaam nie. Moenie julle liggaamsdele as werktuie van ongeregtigheid aan die sonde stel nie, maar stel julleself aan God as mense wat uit die dood tot die lewe gebring is, en stel julle liggaamsdele as werktuie van geregtigheid aan Hom. Want die sonde sal nie oor julle heers nie, omdat julle nie onder die wet is nie, maar onder die genade. Wat dan? Sal ons sondig omdat ons nie onder die wet is nie, maar onder die genade? Hoegenaamd nie!”

Vir die ware bekeerdes is dit dus nie ‘n opsie om sondig te bly lewe nie. Omdat ons bekering ‘n heeltemal nuwe natuur tot gevolg gehad het, is ons begeerte om nie meer in sonde te lewe nie. Ja, ons sondig steeds, maar in plaas daarvan om daarin te ploeter soos ons voorheen gedoen het, haat ons dit nou en wil daarvan verlos word. Die idee om Christus se offer namens ons te “benut” deur sondig te bly lewe, is ondenkbaar. Christene wat geen begeerte het om vir Christus te lewe nie, maar eerder lewens lei wat nie onderskei kan word van dié van ongelowiges nie, moet ondersoek instel of hulle Christus ooit werklik as Verlosser aangeneem het. “Ondersoek julleself of julle in die geloof is; toets julleself. Besef julle nie dat Christus Jesus in julle is nie – tensy julle die toets druip?” (2 Korintiërs 13:5).

He came to announce a whole new world order that was completely out of step with life as it was usually lived. Themes such as forgiveness, service, and unconditional grace were repeatedly on His lips.
Two thousand years later, we find ourselves in need of the same message. Once we begin to repent and live under the authority, rule, and power of Jesus our King, we will experience benefit in our lives, honor His Name, and bless others.

The Bible gives us everything we need
to live our lives for God every day,
But it will do no good if we don’t read it
And practice what its pages say.

A sermon is not complete until it is put into practice.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa insisted that “boycott politics doesn’t work” following the Trump administration’s announced absence from a summit in his country later this month — despite his ruling party’s ongoing support for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.

On Wednesday, Ramaphosa urged US President Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to boycott the G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for Nov. 22-23 in Johannesburg, northeastern South Africa.

Ramaphosa criticized Washington for “giving up the very important role that they should be playing as the biggest economy in the world” in its decision to skip the summit — the first to be held in Africa.

“It is unfortunate that the United States has decided not to attend the G20. All I can say in my experience in politics is that boycotts never really work. They have a very contradictory effect,” the South African leader told reporters outside parliament in Cape Town.

Trump, who has previously accused the South African government of human rights abuses against white minorities — including land seizures and killings — called the decision to host the G20 summit in the country a “total disgrace.”

“No US government official will attend [the summit] as long as these human rights abuses continue,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.

However, the South African government has strongly rejected any claims of genocide, saying such accusations are “widely discredited and unsupported by reliable evidence.”

Ramaphosa reaffirmed that the summit will proceed as scheduled, regardless of Washington’s absence.

“The G20 will go on. All other heads of state will be here, and in the end, we will take fundamental decisions. And their absence is their loss,” he said.

“The US needs to think again whether boycott politics actually works, because in my experience, it doesn’t work. It’s better to be inside the tent rather than being outside the tent,” he continued.

Despite such claims, Ramaphosa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) party has officially endorsed the BDS campaign against Israel for years.

The BDS movement seeks to isolate the Jewish state internationally as a step toward its eventual elimination. Leaders of the campaign have repeatedly stated their goal is to destroy the world’s only Jewish state.

In 2012, the ANC announced its full backing of the BDS movement, urging “all South Africans to support the programs and campaigns of the Palestinian civil society which seek to put pressure on Israel to engage with the Palestinian people to reach a just solution.”

Following Ramaphosa’s comments this week, it remains unclear why he continues to back anti-Israel boycotts if he believes they don’t work.

Since the start of the war in Gaza, the South African government has been one of Israel’s fiercest critics, actively confronting the Jewish state on the international stage.

Beyond its open hostility toward Israel, South Africa has actively supported Hamas, hosting officials from the Palestinian terrorist group and expressing solidarity with their “cause.”

In one instance, Ramaphosa led a crowd at an election rally in a chant of “From the river to the sea, Palestine shall be free” — a popular slogan among anti-Israel activists that has been widely interpreted as a genocidal call for the destruction of the Jewish state, which is located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

Since December 2023, South Africa has also been pursuing its case before the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of committing “state-led genocide” in its defensive war against Hamas in Gaza.

Israeli leaders have condemned the case as an “obscene exploitation” of the Genocide Convention, noting that the Jewish state is targeting terrorists who use civilians as human shields in its military campaign.

Daniel prayed three times a day, a habit documented in the Old Testament book of Daniel, where he would kneel, pray, and give thanks to God facing Jerusalem. This practice is described in Daniel 6:10 as having been his custom since early days, and he continued it even after a decree made prayer to any other god illegal. His prayer schedule was likely early morning, noon, and evening. I really think he continued this in the Lion’s den, for Morning, noon and Evening was Breakfast, supper and Dinner time for the Lions. Maybe his Habit helped saving him, but he did not know, God locked the jaws of the Kings of the Forest.
