NO DUAL CITIZENSHIP FOR THOSE IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD
In the spiritual realm, there are only two kingdoms: the kingdom of God or the kingdom of light, and the kingdom of the world or the kingdom of darkness. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other” (Matthew 6:24 NIV). This statement implies that in God’s kingdom, we cannot hold dual nationalities. We cannot belong to both kingdoms. God’s kingdom asks for our full commitment and total surrender. God wants us to give Him our full loyalty, for He (Jesus) has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves (Colossians 1:13). As citizens of God’s kingdom, we must give up the ways of the world—like sin, selfishness, and living in darkness—when we choose to follow Jesus. God invites us to leave the world’s kingdom behind and grow in His kingdom instead. Jesus, talking to the Pharisees, said, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters” (Matthew 12:30), implying that staying in the middle or sitting on the fence is unacceptable. We must choose which kingdom we want to belong to.
Why We Must Renounce the World to Follow Jesus
1. Believers cannot serve both the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light simultaneously because these kingdoms differ in their values, goals, and leaders. When we give our lives to Jesus, we must leave behind the kingdom of the world and everything it offers, for if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here (2 Corinthians 5:17). To join God’s kingdom, each of us must:
- Repent – Turn away from sin, selfishness, and the ways of the world.
- Reject (Renounce) – Say “no” to Satan’s control and stop trying to rule our own lives.
- Accept – Let Jesus lead every part of our lives.
If we do not give up the world’s kingdom, our hearts stay divided—and God cannot accept that.
2. To follow Jesus, we must choose not to love the world, which comes with pride, greed, lust, and selfish ambition. We choose not to follow the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4), for if we do, the love for the Father is not in us (1 John 2:15).
3. We cannot fight the world while living in it. A soldier cannot fight for different armies. A servant cannot follow two kings who give opposite orders. In the same way, we cannot be faithful to both Jesus and the world’s way of living, for friendship with the world means enmity against God (James 4:4).
4. We cannot enjoy the peace, power, and new life of God’s Kingdom until we give up the old one. Renouncing the world means we trade death for life, and leave behind our chains to find freedom in Jesus. Following Jesus means turning your back on all other rulers—including the world, your own will, and Satan. God’s kingdom is holy, and no one can enter it while holding on to sin and selfish desires. If you feel stuck in addiction, trapped by sin, or afraid of people’s opinions, you must renounce the world to break Satan’s control. God offers true freedom, but you must choose to leave the world’s kingdom behind.
5. If you belong to God’s kingdom, you carry power and purpose. However, you cannot utilize that power while still under the world’s influence. If you want to heal the sick, cast out demons, live in victory, and carry God’s presence, then you must choose purity and surrender. God’s power flows through those who are fully committed to Him.
- Confirms Jesus is King. You do not just ask Jesus to forgive your sins—you give Him full control of your life. You switch kings. Jesus was not looking for fans—He wanted followers who would give Him their full loyalty.
- Breaks Satan’s hold. When you reject Satan’s rule and submit to Jesus, you break the enemy’s legal grip on your soul.
- Starts real change. Without renouncing the old life, you keep old habits, old thinking, and old attitudes. This makes you double-minded and unstable (James 1:8).
If salvation is like moving to a new country, then renunciation is the stamp that says, “No going back.”
Renouncing the World for Christ’s Sake Starts in the Heart
Renouncing the world should not begin with mere words or outward actions; it is a heart decision. Our hearts hold our desires, choices, and loyalty. The Kingdom of God is not just a religion but a relationship with God that comes from a heart fully surrendered to Him. God does not want us only to say, “I renounce the world.” He wants us to believe it and live it. Why?
1. Because God looks at the heart
People judge by outward appearance, but God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). We can say all the right things and take all the right actions, but if our heart still loves the world, then our renunciation does not count for much. True renunciation comes from deep, personal conviction—not from pressure or fear.
2. Because the heart controls our life
If renunciation starts only on the outside, it will not last. It will be weak, shallow, and based on religion, not relationship. But if it begins in the heart, it will shape how we think, speak, choose, and live, for we are to above all else, guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23) and the mouth speaks what the heart is full of (Luke 6:45). The heart is where transformation begins, and those who are pure in heart are the ones who will see God (Matthew 5:8).
Kingdom Citizenship Checklist
How do I know I have truly renounced the kingdom of the world and am walking in the kingdom of light? Truthfully answering these questions will help.
1. Whose values shape how I live, God’s or the world’s? If you have renounced the world, your actions—not just your words—will show loyalty to Jesus.
2. Do I still enjoy the sinful things I said I left behind? Do I fight against sin or try to hide it? When you have renounced the world, you hate sin, crucify the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24), and want to please God more.
3. Do I desire and chase after God more than the word? Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). A heart that belongs to God will desire to talk with God in prayer, read the Bible, spend time with other believers, live a holy life, and help others know God’s kingdom. If your desires mostly chase worldly things, then you may need to check the status of your heart.
4. Do I feel convicted when I do wrong? Am I walking away from sin, or am I comfortable with it? The feeling of conviction shows that the Holy Spirit is working in you, and you are living in God’s Kingdom.
5. Can people see a new kingdom lifestyle in me? Am I growing in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? (Galatians 5:22–23). Jesus said, “By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:16).
You can say you have renounced the kingdom of the world and are walking in the kingdom of light when your loyalty is to Jesus, your desires line up with God’s will, your lifestyle reflects His ways, and your identity shows you belong to God’s kingdom—not the world you left behind.
Conclusion
No one becomes a saint by accident. By default, we were born into the kingdom of the world. So, we must choose to renounce that kingdom and embrace the kingdom of God, which is the eternal home for the saints. If you have not made that decision yet, today is the day of salvation, the day to take a stand for the kingdom of light. Please say this prayer in sincere faith knowing that God hears you when you call to Him:
Lord Jesus, I renounce every loyalty to the world, the flesh, and the devil. I turn away from the kingdom of darkness, and I give myself fully to your kingdom. Be my Savior, and also my Lord and King. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen and Amen
GEEN DUBBELE BURGERSKAP VIR DIEGENE IN DIE KONINKRYK VAN GOD NIE
In die geestelike ryk is daar slegs twee koninkryke: die koninkryk van God of die koninkryk van die lig, en die koninkryk van die wêreld of die koninkryk van die duisternis. Jesus het gesê: “Niemand kan twee here dien nie. Of julle sal die een haat en die ander liefhê, of julle sal die een aanhang en die ander verag” (Matteus 6:24 NLV). Hierdie stelling impliseer dat ons in God se koninkryk nie dubbele nasionaliteite kan hê nie. Ons kan nie aan beide koninkryke behoort nie. God se koninkryk vra vir ons volle toewyding en algehele oorgawe. God wil hê dat ons Hom ons volle lojaliteit moet gee, want Hy (Jesus) het ons gered van die heerskappy van die duisternis en ons in die koninkryk van die Seun wat Hy liefhet, gebring (Kolossense 1:13). As burgers van God se koninkryk moet ons die weë van die wêreld prysgee – soos sonde, selfsug en die lewe in duisternis – wanneer ons kies om Jesus te volg. God nooi ons uit om die wêreld se koninkryk agter te laat en eerder in Sy koninkryk te groei. Jesus het met die Fariseërs gesê: “Wie nie met My is nie, is teen My; en wie nie saam met My bymekaarmaak nie, verstrooi” (Matteus 12:30), wat impliseer dat dit onaanvaarbaar is om in die middel te bly of op die draad te sit. Ons moet kies aan watter koninkryk ons wil behoort.
Waarom Ons die Wêreld Moet Verloën om Jesus te Volg
1. Gelowiges kan nie beide die koninkryk van die duisternis en die koninkryk van die lig gelyktydig dien nie, want hierdie koninkryke verskil in hul waardes, doelwitte en leiers. Wanneer ons ons lewens aan Jesus gee, moet ons die koninkryk van die wêreld en alles wat dit bied agterlaat, want as iemand in Christus is, het die nuwe skepping gekom: Die oue is verby, die nuwe is hier (2 Korintiërs 5:17). Om by God se koninkryk aan te sluit, moet elkeen van ons:
- Bekeer jou – Draai weg van sonde, selfsug en die weë van die wêreld.
- Verwerp (Verloën) – Sê “nee” vir Satan se beheer en hou op om ons eie lewens te probeer regeer.
- Aanvaar – Laat Jesus elke deel van ons lewens lei.
As ons nie die wêreld se koninkryk prysgee nie, bly ons harte verdeeld—en God kan dit nie aanvaar nie.
2. Om Jesus te volg, moet ons kies om nie die wêreld lief te hê nie, wat met trots, gierigheid, wellus en selfsugtige ambisie gepaardgaan. Ons kies om nie die god van hierdie wêreld te volg nie (2 Korintiërs 4:4), want as ons dit doen, is die liefde vir die Vader nie in ons nie (1 Johannes 2:15).
3. Ons kan nie teen die wêreld veg terwyl ons daarin leef nie. ’n Soldaat kan nie vir verskillende leërs veg nie. ’n Dienskneg kan nie twee konings volg wat teenoorgestelde bevele gee nie. Net so kan ons nie getrou wees aan beide Jesus en die wêreld se lewenswyse nie, want vriendskap met die wêreld beteken vyandskap teen God (Jakobus 4:4).
4. Ons kan nie die vrede, krag en nuwe lewe van God se Koninkryk geniet totdat ons die oue prysgee nie. Om die wêreld te versaak beteken dat ons die dood vir die lewe verruil en ons kettings agterlaat om vryheid in Jesus te vind. Om Jesus te volg beteken om jou rug te draai op alle ander heersers – insluitend die wêreld, jou eie wil en Satan. God se koninkryk is heilig, en niemand kan dit binnegaan terwyl hulle aan sonde en selfsugtige begeertes vashou nie. As jy vasgevang voel in verslawing, vasgevang deur sonde, of bang is vir mense se opinies, moet jy die wêreld versaak om Satan se beheer te breek. God bied ware vryheid, maar jy moet kies om die wêreld se koninkryk agter te laat.
5. As jy aan God se koninkryk behoort, dra jy krag en doel. Jy kan egter nie daardie krag gebruik terwyl jy nog onder die wêreld se invloed is nie. As jy die siekes wil genees, demone wil uitdryf, in oorwinning wil leef en God se teenwoordigheid wil dra, dan moet jy reinheid en oorgawe kies. God se krag vloei deur diegene wat ten volle aan Hom toegewy is.
- Bevestig dat Jesus Koning is. Jy vra Jesus nie net om jou sondes te vergewe nie—jy gee Hom volle beheer oor jou lewe. Jy ruil konings. Jesus het nie na aanhangers gesoek nie—Hy wou volgelinge hê wat Hom hul volle lojaliteit sou gee.
- Breek Satan se greep. Wanneer jy Satan se heerskappy verwerp en jou aan Jesus onderwerp, breek jy die vyand se wettige greep op jou siel.
- Begin ware verandering. Sonder om die ou lewe te versaak, hou jy ou gewoontes, ou denke en ou houdings vas. Dit maak jou dubbelsinnig en onbestendig (Jakobus 1:8).
As verlossing soos om na ‘n nuwe land te verhuis is, dan is verloëning die stempel wat sê: “Geen om terug te gaan nie.”
Om die wêreld te verloën ter wille van Christus begin in die hart
Om die wêreld te verloën moet nie met blote woorde of uiterlike dade begin nie; dit is ‘n hartsbesluit. Ons harte bevat ons begeertes, keuses en lojaliteit. Die Koninkryk van God is nie net ‘n godsdiens nie, maar ‘n verhouding met God wat kom uit ‘n hart wat ten volle aan Hom oorgegee is. God wil nie hê dat ons net moet sê: “Ek verloën die wêreld” nie. Hy wil hê dat ons dit moet glo en leef. Hoekom?
1. Omdat God na die hart kyk
Mense oordeel volgens uiterlike voorkoms, maar God kyk na die hart (1 Samuel 16:7). Ons kan al die regte dinge sê en al die regte aksies neem, maar as ons hart steeds die wêreld liefhet, tel ons verloëning nie veel nie. Ware verloëning kom uit diep, persoonlike oortuiging – nie uit druk of vrees nie.
2. Want die hart beheer ons lewe
As verloëning net aan die buitekant begin, sal dit nie hou nie. Dit sal swak, oppervlakkig en gebaseer wees op godsdiens, nie op verhoudings nie. Maar as dit in die hart begin, sal dit vorm hoe ons dink, praat, kies en leef, want ons moet bo alles ons harte bewaak, want alles wat ons doen, vloei daaruit voort (Spreuke 4:23) en die mond spreek waarvan die hart vol is (Lukas 6:45). Die hart is waar transformasie begin, en diegene wat suiwer van hart is, is diegene wat God sal sien (Matteus 5:8).
Koninkryk Burgerskap Kontrolelys
Hoe weet ek dat ek werklik die koninkryk van die wêreld verwerp het en in die koninkryk van die lig wandel? Om hierdie vrae eerlik te beantwoord, sal help.
1. Wie se waardes vorm hoe ek leef, God s’n of die wêreld s’n? As jy die wêreld verloën het, sal jou dade – nie net jou woorde nie – lojaliteit aan Jesus toon.
2. Geniet ek steeds die sondige dinge wat ek gesê het ek agtergelaat het? Veg ek teen sonde of probeer ek dit wegsteek? Wanneer jy die wêreld verloën het, haat jy sonde, kruisig jy die vlees met sy hartstogte en begeertes (Galasiërs 5:24), en wil jy God meer behaag.
3. Begeer en jaag ek God meer na as die woord? Jesus het gesê: “Waar jou skat is, daar sal jou hart ook wees” (Matteus 6:21). ’n Hart wat aan God behoort, sal begeer om met God in gebed te praat, die Bybel te lees, tyd saam met ander gelowiges deur te bring, ’n heilige lewe te lei en ander te help om God se koninkryk te ken. As jou begeertes meestal wêreldse dinge najaag, moet jy dalk die status van jou hart nagaan.
4. Voel ek oortuig wanneer ek verkeerd doen? Loop ek weg van sonde, of is ek gemaklik daarmee? Die gevoel van oortuiging wys dat die Heilige Gees in jou werk, en jy leef in God se Koninkryk.
5. Kan mense ‘n nuwe koninkryk-leefstyl in my sien? Groei ek in liefde, vreugde, vrede, geduld, vriendelikheid, goedheid, getrouheid, sagmoedigheid en selfbeheersing? (Galasiërs 5:22–23). Jesus het gesê: “Aan hulle vrugte sal julle hulle herken” (Matteus 7:16).
Jy kan sê dat jy die koninkryk van die wêreld verwerp het en in die koninkryk van die lig wandel wanneer jou lojaliteit aan Jesus is, jou begeertes ooreenstem met God se wil, jou lewenstyl Sy weë weerspieël, en jou identiteit wys dat jy aan God se koninkryk behoort – nie die wêreld wat jy agtergelaat het nie.
Gevolgtrekking
Niemand word per ongeluk ‘n heilige nie. By verstek is ons in die koninkryk van die wêreld gebore. Ons moet dus kies om daardie koninkryk te verloën en die koninkryk van God te omhels, wat die ewige tuiste vir die heiliges is. As jy nog nie daardie besluit geneem het nie, is vandag die dag van verlossing, die dag om standpunt in te neem vir die koninkryk van die lig. Sê asseblief hierdie gebed in opregte geloof, wetende dat God jou hoor wanneer jy Hom aanroep:
Here Jesus, ek verloën elke lojaliteit teenoor die wêreld, die vlees en die duiwel. Ek draai my weg van die koninkryk van die duisternis en gee myself ten volle oor aan u koninkryk. Wees my Verlosser, en ook my Here en Koning. In Jesus se Naam bid ek. Amen en Amen.

Ek dink soms by myself, dat mense eet te vinning. Hulle moet stadiger eet en die maaltyd geniet. Want almal is gewoonlik lank voor my klaar, want ekt geniet altyd elke happie wat ek eet.
Dit het my laat wonder oor hoeveel van ons lees God se Woord sommer vinning en onnadenkend deur, sonder om dit regtig in te neem. Die Psalmdigter sê: Hoe aangenaam is U woord, soeter as heuning in die mond ( Ps 119:103 ). Dit klink vir my nogal goed. Wat is die voordeel daaraan verbonde indien jy die Woord nadenkend lees en dit geniet ? Ń Daaglikse inname van God se Woord verhinder dat bekommernis, hoogmoed, vrees en versoeking die onversadigde hart aankla, maar dit versterk dat ons ń oorwinnende lewe kan lei.
Die Woord gee wysheid en insig ( vs 98-100 ). En dit help ons om ons voete van verkeerde paaie af weg te hou ( vs 101 ). Net soos wat ons liggaam die kos verwerk en voeding verskaf, so sal God se Woord, indien dit verteer word, ook ons denke, emosies en wil voed.
In plaas van om God se Woord te gryp, vinnig ń stukkie te lees net voordat jy by die deur uitstap, is dit belangrik dat jy dit tydsaam sal lees, en wel op ń plek waar jy waarlik gemeenskap met die Here kan beoefen.
Neem tog tyd om die Heerlike rykdom van God se wonderlike Woord in te neem, sodat jy daardeur versterk word.
God se Woord bevat die bestanddele wat ons nodig het om geestelik te groei.
Enjoy Every Bite:
Sometimes I think to myself that people eat too fast. They should eat more slowly and enjoy the meal. Because everyone else is usually finished long before me, because I always enjoy every bite I eat.
It made me wonder how many of us read God’s Word quickly and thoughtlessly, without really taking it in. The Psalmist says: How sweet are your words, sweeter than honey to the mouth ( Ps 119:103 ). That sounds pretty good to me. What is the benefit of reading the Word thoughtfully and enjoying it? Ñ Daily intake of God’s Word prevents worry, pride, fear and temptation from charging the insatiable heart, but it strengthens us to live a victorious life.
The Word gives wisdom and insight ( v 98-100 ). And it helps us to keep our feet from wrong paths ( v 101 ). Just as our body processes food and provides nourishment, so God’s Word, if digested, will also nourish our thoughts, emotions, and will.
Instead of grabbing God’s Word, quickly reading a piece just before you walk out the door, it is important that you read it slowly, and in a place where you can truly commune with the Lord.
Take time to take in the glorious riches of God’s wonderful Word, so that you may be strengthened by it.
God’s Word contains the ingredients we need to grow spiritually.
