Bible Teaching of the Day

Tongues to Fire

James 3:6 compares our tongues to fire. To understand this metaphor in context, we need to begin in verse 5: “Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” Fire can be either constructive or destructive depending upon its containment. So it is with the tongue.

Fire is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity. With fire we cook food, heat our homes, and destroy garbage that would otherwise overwhelm us. Likewise, the gift of speech is of great benefit. With our tongues we communicate information, express affection, and praise God. A tongue under control can speak life and truth into our world, bless and discipline our children, and transfer the wisdom God has given us (Proverbs 18:21). But, like fire out of bounds, our tongues can also do great damage.

James 3:9–10 says, “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” A tongue out of control can tear down self-worth, destroy relationships, and order the execution of evil plans. Like a grassfire touched by a sudden breeze, our words can take off, spreading far and wide in ways we never imagined. Gossip, slander, cursing, and lies are all symptoms of a wildfire tongue (Exodus 23:1; Leviticus 19:16; Proverbs 16:27; 2 Corinthians 12:20). One has but to witness the rapid spread of a scandalous rumor to see that the tongue is like a fire.

James 3:8 warns that the tongue’s fire easily becomes unmanageable: “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” So what are we to do? If the tongue cannot be tamed, how are we to control it? The fruit of the Spirit includes self-control (Galatians 5:22–23), which is exactly what we need to put out the fire of the tongue. Colossians 4:6 says, “Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.” When we consider the members of our bodies as instruments of righteousness (Romans 6:13), we know that our tongues belong to Him. Bitter words, hateful words, and foul words must be crucified with the flesh (Galatians 2:20; 5:24), or they will dominate our speech. Our flesh does not have the power to tame the tongue; only the Holy Spirit can.

Whatever good gift God creates, Satan perverts. The tongue is one such area Satan has corrupted, which is why the Bible says the tongue has been “set on fire by hell” (James 3:6). We defy Satan’s evil attempts to destroy our lives through the tongue when we commit ourselves daily to the lordship of Jesus. We can offer ourselves every day as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), and we can specifically focus on giving our tongues over to the Lord. “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). We can ask the Lord to make us more conscious of the words we speak and quickly repent of any comment that dishonors Him.

Our tongues can be compared favorably to fire when we use our words to warm hearts, spread truth, and destroy lies. To keep our tongues under control, we can start every day with the prayer David prayed: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14).

“Stel ‘n wag voor my mond, HERE; bewaar die deur van my lippe” (Psalm 141:3).

Today’s Devotional

NEARER MY GOD TO THEE

Every New Years day I have received many new year’s messages from readers, friends, and family. And though I am grateful for each one, I am concerned about the fleshly nature of most. From what I have seen, we (and I include myself) are often more concerned about the things of this world or the flesh. For this reason, we wish blessings like prosperity, wealth, and health upon one another.

When spending time with the Lord, the song “Nearer my God to Thee” came to mind. And this is my prayer for 2025, that we may grow nearer to God, that we may get to know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, becoming conformed unto his death; if by any means we may attain unto the resurrection from the dead. (Philippians 3:10-12)

My desire for 2025 was that we will long after spiritual things, that we will long to come close to God, and that we will have a renewed desire to seek a spiritual renewal of the heart.

Oh, how I wish we could all say, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Jesus Christ – the righteousness that comes from God based on faith. I want to know Christ – yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. (Philippians 3:8-11)

My desire is that we will draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water as per Hebrews 10:22. Just so I desire that we will submit ourselves to God, that we will resist the devil, that we will come near to God and humble ourselves before the Lord. (James 4: 7-10)

When we draw near to God, the Lord will draw near to us, and we will experience His presence, guidance, salvation, healing, protection, provision, and everything else we may long for according to His sovereign will. (See Jeremiah 28:13, Psalm 145:18, Zechariah 1:3 and Matthew 6:33)

Vandag se Bemoediging

NADER MY GOD AAN U

Christian Summer Camps Under Attack in the USA – Bow To Gender Ideology Or Be Shut Down

This summer, as children across the country prepare for the joy and freedom of Christian camps, places where the Gospel is proclaimed, biblical truth is taught, and lifelong friendships are formed – a chilling wind is sweeping through our courts and legislative halls to put a stop to it.

From Lecture Hall To Street Riot: The Dangerous Gospel Of Identity Studies

According to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, 52% of students majoring in Ethnic and Gender studies now say violence is an acceptable response to offensive speech. Compare that to just 26% of STEM majors. The difference isn’t just academic; it’s ideological.

Places in the Bible

Golan Heights (Biblical Bashan)

Also known as Batanea, Gaulanitis, Geshur, Karnaim

Three brown cows grazing on a grassy meadow with scattered rocks and oak trees, a mountain in the background with some snow

Cows of Bashan, Oaks of Bashan

Cattle have been raised in this area, in ancient times as well as today. Both beef and dairy cattle are currently raised in the Golan Heights. In biblical times, this area (known as Bashan) was known for its cattle and its oak trees.

Amos 4:1-2 (NASB): “Hear this word, you cows of Bashan…” (cf. Ps 22:12).

Zechariah 11:2 (KJV): “Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down” (cf. Isa 2:13).

Dolmens

Hundreds of dolmens have been found in the Golan Heights. Used for burial in the basalt areas where grave digging is difficult, dolmens were used for burial during both the Early Bronze I and Intermediate Bronze periods. The dolmen was most likely intended as a burial chamber for the chief of a clan, or another member of the nomadic elite. A dolmen is constructed of two large vertical stone slabs capped by a horizontal stone, which can weigh up to 30 tons (27 T).

Nimrod’s Fortress

Known in Arabic as Subebe (from the Crusader name L’Asibebe), this English name for the castle mistakenly associates it with Nimrod, an ancient figure of great strength mentioned in Genesis 10:8-9. This is one of the castles that was built by the Muslims, but it changed hands several times in the 12th century. The fortress was strengthened in the 13th century and most remains visible today are from that period. The mountain is over 1,300 feet (400 m) long, and in places, its width reaches 490 feet (150 m). The summit rises to an elevation of 2,600 feet (800 m) above sea level. The castle is also known as the Citadel of the Mosquitoes since swarms tend to rise up at times and cover the entire area.

Syrian Territory

The Golan Heights belonged to the country of Syria until 1967. During the Six-Day War, Israel took this high ground overlooking the Huleh Basin and Sea of Galilee. Today evidence of Syrian habitation, including military bases and mosques (right) lie in ruins throughout the area. The region is now populated by Druze (who lived there before the war) and Israelis who have moved in since the war. Syria insists on the return of the Golan Heights as part of any peace agreement.

Rogem Hiri

Rogem Hiri (in Arabic, Rujm al-Hiri) is located in the Golan Heights about 10 miles (16 km) east of the Sea of Galilee. Four concentric circles surround a central cairn. The largest circle measures 490 feet (150 m) in diameter. The walls measure up to 11.5 feet (3.5 m) in width and have been preserved up to 8 feet (2.5 m) high. Its last use was no later than the Late Bronze Age (1500–1200 BC). The function of Rogem Hiri is not known. Suggestions include that it was a defensive complex, a burial complex, an astronomical observation center, or the tomb of Og, giant king of Bashan (Deut 3:11).

Nahal Saar

The Golan is a basalt plateau which rises in the northeast to an average altitude of 3,000 feet (900 m) above sea level. The Golan Heights is bordered by Mt. Hermon on the north and the Yarmuk River on the south. At the northeastern corner is an inactive chain of volcanic cones. Their activities in the past created thick basalt layers, resulting in rocky terrain unsuitable for intensive agriculture. Instead, it is used mainly for grazing and pasture. The situation of the Golan Heights results in a significant amount of winter rainfall, with large run-off in the spring through numerous wadis draining to the Huleh Basin and the Sea of Galilee.

Mount Hermon

Mount Hermon is the southern tip of the anti-Lebanon mountain range. The highest peak of Mount Hermon is 9,230 feet (2,813 m). The highest point inside Israel’s borders today is Mizpe Shelagim, the “snow observatory,” at 7,295 feet (2,223 m). In the Bible, it is known as Ba’al Hermon, Sirion, and Sion. Psalm 133 gives an image of the pleasantness and fruitfulness of this mountain. It speaks of the bounty of water, a place that receives much precipitation. Hermon, on average, gets 60 inches (152 cm) of precipitation a year (in 1992, it received 100 in [254 cm]). It is quite possible that the Transfiguration took place somewhere on the slopes of Mount Hermon, as Jesus and His disciples were previously noted to be in the “region of Caesarea Philippi.” Caesarea Philippi sits at the base of Mount Hermon and thus Mount Hermon could be the mountain where Jesus took the disciples.

Introduction to the Bible – Bible Summary

Summary of the Book of
Malachi
Author:
Malachi 1:1 identifies the author of the Book of Malachi as the Prophet Malachi.
Date of Writing: The Book of Malachi was written between 440 and 400 B.C.
Purpose of Writing: The Book of Malachi is an oracle: The word of the Lord to Israel
through Malachi (1:1). This was God’s warning through Malachi to tell the people to turn
back to God. As the final book of the Old Testament closes, the pronouncement of
God’s justice and the promise of His restoration through the coming Messiah is ringing
in the ears of the Israelites. Four hundred years of silence ensues, ending with a similar
message from God’s next prophet, John the Baptist, proclaiming, “Repent, for the
kingdom of heaven is near” (Matthew 3:2).
Key Verses:
Malachi 1:6, “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, where is
the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me? says
the LORD Almighty. It is you, O priests, who show contempt for my name.”
Malachi 3:6-7, “I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not
destroyed. Ever since the time of your forefathers you have turned away from my
decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says
the LORD Almighty.”
Brief Summary: Malachi wrote the words of the Lord to God’s chosen people who had
gone astray, especially the priests who had turned from the Lord. Priests were not
treating the sacrifices they were to make to God seriously. Animals with blemishes were
being sacrificed even though the law demanded animals without defect (Deuteronomy
15:21). The men of Judah were dealing with the wives of their youth treacherously and
wondering why God would not accept their sacrifices. Also, people were not tithing as
they should have been (Leviticus 27:30, 32). But in spite of the people’s sin and turning
away from God, Malachi reiterates God’s love for His people (Malachi 1:1-5) and His
promises of a coming Messenger (Malachi 2:17–3:5).
Foreshadowings: Malachi 3:1-6 is a prophecy concerning John the Baptist. He was the
Messenger of the Lord sent to prepare the way (Matthew 11:10) for the Messiah, Jesus
Christ. John preached repentance and baptized in the name of the Lord, thus preparing
the way for Jesus’ first advent. But the Messenger who comes “suddenly to the Temple”
is Christ Himself in His second advent when He comes in power and might (Matthew
24). At that time, He will “purify the sons of Levi” (v. 3), meaning that those who
exemplified the Mosaic Law would themselves need purification from sin through the
blood of the Savior. Only then will they be able to offer “an offering in righteousness”
because it will be the righteousness of Christ imputed to them through faith (2
Corinthians 5:21).
Practical Application: God is not pleased when we do not obey His commands. He will
repay those who disregard Him. As for God hating divorce (2:16), God takes the
covenant of marriage seriously and He does not want it broken. We are to stay true to
the spouse of our youth for a lifetime. God sees our hearts, so He knows what our
intentions are; nothing can be hidden from Him. He will return and He will be the judge.
But if we return to Him, He will return to us (Malachi 3:6).

Inleiding tot die Bybel – Bybel Samevatting

Opsomming van die boek
Maleagi
Skrywer:
eer aan my toe? As ek ‘n meester is, waar kom die respek aan my toe? sê die HERE die
Almagtige. Dit is julle, o priesters, wat my Naam minag.”
Almagtige.”
Hy was
toe terugkeer ( Maleagi 3:6 ).
