3. The Word is My Foundation
The basis of the Christian faith is the death and resurrection of Jesus, without which there would be no Christian faith or salvation. These truths are recorded in the Bible. However, as a reaction to some people who question the relevancy and reliability of the Bible, some believers take a different approach, pointing people away from the Bible to focus their faith on Jesus alone. Is it correct to say that the Bible is the foundation of our faith—or is it Jesus?
Undoubtedly, Jesus is the object of our faith. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (emphasis added). Acts 16:31 says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (emphasis added). So, we place our faith in Jesus. The question then becomes, can we believe in Jesus apart from the Bible?
A foundation is the basis or groundwork of something. The Christian faith has the person and work of Jesus Christ as its foundation: our faith is built upon Christ, the rock of our salvation (Psalm 62:1) and the chief cornerstone (Isaiah 28:16–17; 1 Peter 2:6). Jesus, God in the flesh, is a real person who came to earth at a specific time in history. His death and resurrection are historical events. At the same time, the person and work of Jesus cannot be understood apart from God’s Word, the Bible. Ephesians 2:20–21 tells us that our faith is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord” (emphasis added). Christ is the cornerstone of our faith, and our understanding of this is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets—i.e., what they recorded in the Bible (Matthew 23:35; 2 Timothy 3:16).
The entire Bible points to Jesus (see John 5:39): the Old Testament reveals our need for a Savior, predicts His coming, and sets the stage for the significance of His sacrifice; and the New Testament describes His coming, His death and resurrection to bring salvation to our sinful world, and His ongoing work as we await God’s kingdom and the restoration of all things (Acts 3:21; Revelation 21:1). The Bible sets Jesus as our foundation and leads us to understand salvation (2 Timothy 3:15).
Romans 10:17 reveals that our faith comes from hearing God’s Word: “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Likewise, 1 Peter 1:23 tells us that we are born again “through the word of God which lives and abides forever.” What saves us? First Corinthians 15:3–4 indicates that it’s the gospel and then spells out what the gospel is: “By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. . . . For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (emphasis added). Notice how the work of Christ is linked to the Scriptures. The foundation of our faith is the person and work of the historical Jesus, and we know that through what God, in His grace, has revealed to us in His Word.
We cannot have saving faith or believe the essentials of the faith without the Bible, because we would not know who Jesus is and what He did for us without the Bible. In that way, the Bible is the foundation for our faith. At the same time, we must be careful not to fall into bibliolatry (Bible worship). Believing that the Bible is true and authoritative is not bibliolatry, but we must remember that the Bible is not God. Rather, the Bible reveals to us who God is and points to the object of our faith: Jesus Christ.
Some attempt to separate Jesus from the Bible, but the implications of this approach have far-reaching consequences. If we remove the Bible as the foundation of our faith, what can we believe? What is true about Jesus, and what is false? What do we base our understanding of Jesus on? God gave us His Word so we could know and believe in Him. Praise God that He has given us His Word!
Jesus is the object of our faith; we place our trust in Christ. He is the foundation of our faith. The Bible is also the foundation of our faith in that it leads us to know God and His plan of salvation. Having Jesus and the Bible as the foundation of our faith is not a contradiction. As we seek God through His Word, we are led to saving faith in Jesus.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 16:18 are the focus of an ongoing debate over who or what “the rock” is that Jesus mentions. The immediate context contains a question that Jesus put to His disciples: “Who do you say I am?” (verse 15). Peter answers, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (verse 16), to which Jesus replies, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (verses 17–18).
Is “this rock” on which Christ promised to build His church Peter? Is it Peter’s faith? Is it the truth of Peter’s statement? Or is the rock Jesus Himself? In all honesty, there is no way for us to be 100 percent sure which view is correct.
First view: the rock is Peter
One view is that Jesus was declaring that Peter would be the “rock” on which He would build His church. Jesus appears to be using a play on words. “You are Peter [petros] and on this rock [petra] I will build my church.” Since Peter’s name means “rock,” and Jesus is going to build His church on a rock, it appears that Christ means to link Peter with the founding of the church. It’s true that God used Peter greatly in the foundation of the church. It was Peter who first proclaimed the gospel on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14–47). Peter was also the first to take the gospel to the Gentiles (Acts 10:1–48). In a sense, Peter was the rock “foundation” of the church.
Second view: the rock is the truth contained in Peter’s statement
Another popular interpretation is that the rock Jesus was referring to is not Peter, but Peter’s statement in Matthew 16:16: “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” In this view, the “rock” is the truthfulness of that statement—the church is built on the rock-solid truth that Jesus is God’s Chosen One and the eternal Son of God. In confessing Jesus as the Christ, Peter, the “rock,” was demonstrating his own stability as he stood on that truth. He was, in a way, showing his character and why Jesus nicknamed him “Cephas” or “Peter” (see John 1:42).
Third view: the rock is Peter’s faith
Jesus had never explicitly taught the disciples the fullness of His identity, and so it was God who had sovereignly opened Peter’s eyes to that revelation. Jesus marks the source of that truth in Matthew 16:17. Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God poured forth from him as a heartfelt declaration of personal faith. Since personal faith in Christ is the hallmark of the true Christian, those who place their faith in Christ, as Peter did, are the church. Peter, writing to believers dispersed through the ancient world, likens them to stones used to build the church: “As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:4–5). The faith of believers is what makes them “living stones” able to be built into the church.
Fourth view: the rock is Jesus
After Jesus declares that God the Father had revealed the truth to Peter, He says, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). The word for “Peter,” Petros, is a masculine noun that means “a detached stone, a stone that might be thrown or easily moved” (Zodhiates, S., The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament, AMG Publishers, 1992, p. 1,154). The word for “rock” next mentioned is a different Greek word, petra, a feminine noun that means “a mass of rock” or “a cliff” and therefore something foundational (ibid.; see also Matthew 7:24–25). The difference in the two terms may suggest that Jesus was contrasting Peter with Himself. That is, Jesus was saying, “You are the small rock, but I am the foundation of the church.” This view finds support in other passages that present Christ, not Peter, as the foundation of the church (1 Corinthians 3:11) and the life-giving rock (1 Corinthians 10:4).
Of course, the apostles played a foundational role in the building of the church, but the role of primacy is reserved for Christ alone. So, Jesus’ words in Matthew 16:18 are best interpreted as a simple play on words: a boulder-like, foundational truth came from the mouth of one who was called a small stone.
Christ Himself is called the “chief cornerstone” (1 Peter 2:6–7; cf. Matthew 21:42). The chief cornerstone of any building was that upon which a building is anchored. If Christ declared Himself to be the cornerstone, how could Peter be the rock upon which the church was built? Believers are the stones that make up the church. They are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets (not just Peter) and anchored to the Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). “The one who trusts in [Christ] will never be put to shame” (1 Peter 2:6).
The Roman Catholic Church argues that Peter is the rock upon which Jesus built His church, confers upon Peter the title of pope, and claims to be the one true church. As we have seen, however, identifying the rock as Peter is not the only valid interpretation of Matthew 16:18. Even if Peter is the rock upon which Jesus promised to build His church, it does not give the Roman Catholic Church any authority. What is clearer is that Scripture never describes Peter as being supreme over the other apostles. The New Testament does not describe Peter as being the all-authoritative leader of the early church. The origin of the Catholic Church is not in the teachings of Peter or any other apostle. If Peter truly was the founder of the Roman Catholic Church, it would be in full agreement with what Peter taught (Acts 2, 1 Peter, 2 Peter).
The Bible refers to the “foundation” of the world in various passages. To found something is to establish a thing or lay the groundwork or secure the underpinnings for it. The “foundation of the world” is a reference to God’s act of creation. When Scripture refers to something that has been true “from the foundation of the world,” it means “for all of human history.” But when Scripture refers to something that happened “before the foundation of the world,” the event under discussion occurred before anything was ever created, in eternity past.
In Ephesians 1:4, we read of something that happened in eternity past: “[God] chose us in [Christ] before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him” (ESV). This is an amazing passage, with its emphasis on God’s choosing—before the world was even created—those who would become believers. Before God had created anything at all, at least three things were already true: God saw mankind as lost and in need of a Savior; the eternal Savior was present; and the details of the work of redemption were planned out. In all of this, God had our transformation to holiness in view (see also 2 Timothy 1:9).
In another passage that shows God’s eternal plan, Scripture says that Jesus Christ, “a lamb unblemished and spotless . . . was foreknown before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:19–20, NASB). The apostle Paul speaks of “God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began” (1 Corinthians 2:7).
The eternal nature of God the Son and His eternal relationship with God the Father are evident in Jesus’ high priestly prayer: “Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24, ESV). The Son of God is not a created being; He possessed glory with the Father, was loved by the Father, and dwelt with the Father before the universe was created (see also John 1:1–2).
The Bible’s glimpses of what happened before the foundation of the world should give the believer great comfort. We have a Savior who is eternal. God’s grace was extended to us from eternity past. God’s plan of salvation, being eternal, is unchanging; nothing can frustrate, amend, or impede that plan. From before the foundation of the world, God laid out His design to love us, redeem us, shower us with grace, and make us holy. “When the set time had fully come, God sent his Son . . . that we might receive adoption to sonship” (Galatians 4:4–5). “Praise be to his glorious name forever” (Psalm 72:19).

“The prayers go up, and the blessings come down…” The words to this children’s song are only half right, because God sends his blessings many times even when we don’t pray. But just as we love the special smell that comes with a drought-breaking rain, God loves the aroma of his children’s joy, especially when he is the source of their delight! So, dear friends, let’s find reasons to rejoice with the seasons changing to autumn (Northern Hemisphere) and spring (Southern Hemisphere). As the apostle Paul told the Philippians:
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near (Philippians 4:4-5).
Prayer
Holy God and tender Father, you are our great delight. In the changing of our seasons, you remain our dependable, faithful, and loving God. You are our rock and fortress; you are our tender shepherd; and you are our solid mountain that cannot be shaken or moved. Your blessings and grace shower down upon us and fill us with joy. We can’t wait for the day we get to see you face to face and delight in your presence forever. Until then, O Lord, we will rejoice in anticipation as you shower us with your blessings. The Teaching of the Pre Tribulation Rapture was born from Fear . The Bible only supports a Post Tribulation Rapture . The Only Rapture happens when Jesus return on His 2nd Coming . As Jesus stated . Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Jesus told his disciples 2000 year ago , They will have to wait until the Rapture of his 2nd coming to join him in Heaven . The Words of Jesus . Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

The Words of Paul confirms this as he personally received it from Jesus 1Th 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

The 144 000 Jews that will be protected during the wrath of God and the Great Tribulation will not be Jesus saved . They are the Promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . 12000 of each Tribe , If a person from the Jewish believe becomes a Christian he or she is not of Jewish believe anymore but of Christian believe . The Rest of the Jews and Christians will go through the Tribulation . as confirmed in these verses Rev 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
Rev 7:4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
There will be a uncountable Multitude that will go through the Great Tribulation confirmed to John by Jesus ! The UN Wants The Keys To Ai – What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
Artificial intelligence may become the most powerful information technology humanity has ever created. It will increasingly determine what people read, what children learn, how governments operate and, perhaps most importantly, what billions of people believe to be true.
So there is a question just as important as what AI will eventually be capable of doing:
Who gets to make the rules?
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres wants the UN to play a major role in answering that question. The organization has launched a Global Dialogue on AI Governance, created an international scientific panel on AI and is pushing countries toward greater cooperation over how this technology should be controlled.
AI certainly presents enormous risks. But before giving an international institution greater influence over the rules governing the world’s most powerful technology, perhaps we should examine the institution asking for the keys.
This Is About More Than AI Safety
The UN’s Global Digital Compact explicitly calls for enhanced “international governance of artificial intelligence” and says the United Nations has “an important role to play in shaping, enabling and supporting” that governance.
The architecture is already taking shape: scientific panels, global dialogues, international cooperation and interoperable standards.
Each sounds harmless enough by itself.
Together, however, they create something much more significant — an international framework capable of influencing how governments regulate a technology that could eventually mediate much of humanity’s access to information.
And information is where this becomes especially dangerous.
Who Decides What AI Is Allowed To Tell You?
The Global Digital Compact doesn’t stop with dangerous AI systems. It also addresses “information integrity,” misinformation, disinformation and hate speech while promoting international cooperation over how these issues should be handled.
That raises an enormous question:
Who determines what constitutes misinformation?
Increasingly, people won’t search ten websites and compare competing arguments. They’ll ask an AI assistant a question and receive one synthesized answer.
What caused this war? Was this election fair? What does the Bible teach about sexuality? Is this medical treatment safe? Is this religious belief hateful? Who has the historical claim to Jerusalem?
AI won’t simply locate information. It will select, summarize, interpret and prioritize it.
Control the standards governing AI and you potentially influence the gatekeeper through which billions of people understand the world.
Israel Should Be A Warning
For Christians and supporters of Israel, the UN’s record should immediately raise concerns.
Israel has faced extraordinary scrutiny throughout the UN system. The advocacy organization UN Watch counted 15 General Assembly resolutions concerning Israel in 2025 compared with 11 concerning all other countries combined.
Then came the UNRWA scandal. A UN investigation examined allegations involving 19 employees following October 7 and ultimately concluded that evidence concerning nine indicated they “may have been involved” in the attacks. Those employees were fired.
Now imagine similar institutional judgments filtering into artificial intelligence.
Who determines how AI describes Jerusalem?
Who defines “occupation,” “terrorism,” “resistance,” “settlements” or “genocide”?
Who determines whether Israel’s biblical and historical connection to the land is legitimate history or religious mythology?
Today’s diplomatic battles could become tomorrow’s algorithmic assumptions.
And unlike a UN resolution that most Americans will never read, an AI-generated answer could reach hundreds of millions of people.
COVID Should Have Taught Us Something
The COVID era provided another lesson about concentrating authority in international institutions.
The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response concluded that serious failures occurred across the international system and national governments during the opening stages of COVID, famously describing February 2020 as a “lost month.”
International institutions are run by people. They can be slow. They can succumb to political pressures. They can get things wrong.
Yet during a crisis, their conclusions can quickly acquire enormous authority.
Now imagine those judgments incorporated into AI systems answering billions of questions every day.
A mistaken press conference eventually disappears.
An assumption embedded throughout an AI information ecosystem can reproduce itself endlessly.
Global Governance Doesn’t Need A World Government
The most consequential change could happen gradually.
International dialogue becomes scientific panels. Panels develop principles. Principles become standards. Standards become regulatory expectations. Governments incorporate them into national laws. Technology companies modify their systems to comply across hundreds of jurisdictions.
Eventually, rules that began as international recommendations can become difficult for ordinary people or companies to escape.
The Global Digital Compact openly promotes cooperation to make AI governance frameworks more compatible and encourages interoperable international standards.
No secret meetings are required.
The framework is being discussed and assembled in public.
Control The AI, Control The Gatekeeper
Previous generations worried about governments controlling newspapers, radio stations and television networks.
AI changes the scale entirely.
Imagine a generation that rarely reads primary documents or visits individual news organizations. People simply ask their AI what happened.
AI explains history. Summarizes news. Teaches children. Answers religious questions. Recommends financial decisions. Determines which sources appear credible.
Soon AI agents may conduct transactions, interact with governments and manage parts of people’s digital lives.
Whoever substantially influences the rules governing those systems possesses something far more consequential than traditional media influence.
They influence the gatekeeper itself.
The Prophetic Dimension Is Difficult To Ignore
Revelation 13 describes a future system of extraordinary centralized power under the Antichrist, eventually reaching into something as basic as whether individuals can “buy or sell.”
For nearly 2,000 years, such worldwide control would have been practically impossible.
Not anymore.
Digital identity, biometric authentication, programmable digital currencies, mass surveillance, interconnected databases and artificial intelligence are creating capabilities ancient empires could never have imagined.
AI could become the connective tissue holding much of it together — identifying individuals, analyzing behavior, detecting prohibited activity, processing transactions, monitoring communications and determining access to digital systems at extraordinary scale.
Now place those technologies alongside the growing push for international governance.
The Bible describes a final period in which political authority, economic control and spiritual rebellion converge under one ruler. Our generation is constructing technologies capable of enabling levels of centralized control that previous generations could scarcely comprehend.
That should make Christians pay very close attention when the world’s most powerful technology begins converging with increasingly ambitious systems of global governance.
The UN wants a greater role in governing AI.
But the deeper question is where this road eventually leads.
Because humanity is rapidly building an AI infrastructure powerful enough that whoever ultimately controls it could exercise a degree of influence over information, identity and economic participation unlike anything the world has ever seen.
And Scripture has already warned us that one day, someone will.
The Church Of England’s Collapse Is Happening In Plain Sight
Imagine trying to write a parody of the modern Church of England.
Britain’s most senior Christian leader presents an award for “reconciliation and interfaith cooperation” to a Muslim cleric who once proposed honoring Osama bin Laden with the title “Sword of God.”
Then imagine scheduling the presentation for September 11.
Not just any September 11, either. The 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in the United States.
Unfortunately, this isn’t parody.
Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally presented Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, with the Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation on September 11. The award recognized what was described as his “outstanding work as an ambassador of interfaith harmony in Pakistan.”
Days later, Lambeth Palace withdrew it.
The reason? According to the Archbishop’s office, “previous comments” made by Ashrafi had “come to light.”
That explanation may be almost as disturbing as the original decision.
The Award That Should Never Have Been Given
The comments weren’t some obscure social-media post from Ashrafi’s youth.
In 2007, while leading the Pakistan Ulema Council, Ashrafi said he would give Osama bin Laden the title “Saifullah” — “Sword of God” — amid controversy over Britain’s knighthood of Salman Rushdie. Ashrafi has since insisted that the remarks have been stripped of their context and were intended to illustrate Muslim anger over the Rushdie honor, not to endorse bin Laden.
People can consider that explanation for themselves.
But the question facing the Church of England is different: How did nobody responsible for vetting the recipient discover something this explosive before the Archbishop of Canterbury personally placed an award in his hands?
And how did nobody recognize the extraordinary symbolism of doing it on September 11?
The withdrawal doesn’t erase the problem. It exposes it.
This was not an award hastily handed out by a local parish. It came from the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury and specifically honored its recipient for reconciliation and interfaith cooperation.
The institution that awarded it apparently learned enough afterward to decide that it should never have been given.
That should deeply concern anyone wondering about the judgment of those now leading one of Christianity’s most historically important institutions.
And Then Came Leeds
As if the Church of England needed another controversy involving Hamas and radical Islam, another erupted almost simultaneously.
Leeds Minster had been hosting an exhibition called “Stitch Their Names Together,” displaying the names of thousands of Palestinians reported killed in Gaza since October 2023.
Before the exhibition opened, the Leeds Jewish Representative Council warned that names of Hamas fighters could be included. Minster officials checked 12 names that had initially been identified, found that those particular names weren’t displayed on the panels at Leeds, and allowed the exhibition to proceed.
Then came more evidence.
On September 18, Leeds Minster acknowledged receiving information indicating that at least 18 known Hamas fighters were in fact named in the exhibition.
The church immediately closed it and apologized for damaging its relationship with the Jewish community.
Again, the response came after the problem had already occurred.
Again, outsiders sounded the alarm.
Again, a Church of England institution found itself scrambling to undo the damage.
How many times can this happen before Christians start asking whether the problem goes deeper than inadequate vetting?
When Reconciliation Loses Discernment
Christians should love their Muslim neighbors and desire peace with them.
None of that requires abandoning discernment.
Interfaith dialogue does not require handing out awards.
Compassion for Palestinian civilians does not require blurring the distinction between civilians and Hamas terrorists.
Reconciliation does not require pretending profound theological and moral differences don’t exist.
And Christian love certainly doesn’t require naivety about radical Islamist ideology.
Yet this increasingly seems to be the trap into which parts of Western Christianity have fallen. Being welcoming becomes more important than being discerning. Avoiding offense becomes more important than confronting uncomfortable truths. The desire to demonstrate tolerance becomes so powerful that institutions sometimes fail to ask the most obvious questions until someone outside the church forces them to.
The irony is difficult to miss.
The Church of England is extraordinarily careful about language, inclusion and sensitivity in many areas of modern life. Yet somehow an award could still reach the hands of a cleric with a highly controversial public record — on the anniversary of 9/11.
A Church Already In Crisis
All of this comes at an especially dangerous moment for the Church of England.
Sarah Mullally inherited an institution already battered by scandal, theological division and declining attendance. Her predecessor, Justin Welby, resigned following devastating criticism over the Church’s handling of the John Smyth abuse scandal.
The Church desperately needs to rebuild trust.
Instead, within the opening chapter of a new archbishop’s tenure, Lambeth Palace has found itself explaining how an interfaith award presented by Mullally had to be withdrawn after information about its recipient “came to light.”
Christians have every right to ask how such a failure occurred.
Who vetted the recipient?
What was examined?
What wasn’t?
And why did the warning signs apparently become important only after the public began asking questions?
Those aren’t unreasonable questions. They are precisely the questions an institution serious about restoring trust should want answered.
The Real Crisis Isn’t Islam
But there is an even larger lesson here.
The fundamental problem facing the Church of England isn’t that Muslims believe Islamic doctrines.
The deeper crisis is that a Christian institution increasingly appears unsure how confidently it should advocate for its own.
A confident church can love Muslims without pretending Christianity and Islam are interchangeable paths to God.
A confident church can pursue reconciliation while still exercising judgment about whom it honors.
A confident church can grieve for Palestinian children while refusing to inadvertently commemorate Hamas terrorists.
A confident church understands that tolerance does not mean theological surrender and that compassion does not require moral confusion.
Most importantly, a confident church remembers what it exists to do.
Jesus did not commission His followers to make Christianity acceptable to every competing worldview. He told them to “make disciples of all nations.”
The Church’s mission isn’t to convince the world that Christians are sufficiently fashionable, progressive or accommodating.
It is to proclaim Jesus Christ.
Perhaps that is why these controversies resonate beyond the individual mistakes involved. Christians are watching an ancient institution struggle with something much deeper than public relations.
They are watching a crisis of identity.
The Church of England doesn’t need another carefully worded apology after the next controversy. It doesn’t need another committee explaining how something embarrassing slipped through the cracks.
It needs something much more radical.
It needs the confidence to be Christian again.
