The Spirit of the Lord – Shall Lift a Standard against the Enemy

Exodus 17:15–16 tells us, “Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. He said, ‘Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.’” “The Lord is my Banner” is the translation of the Hebrew Yahweh-Nissi.
Earlier in Exodus 17, we read of the Amalekites attacking the Israelites at Rephidim. Joshua and the Israelites fought against the Amalekites while Moses stood on top of a hill with the staff of God in his hands. When Moses’ hands were lifted, the Israelites were winning; when his hands were lowered, the Amalekites were winning. Understandably, Moses grew tired, so he sat on a stone, and Aaron and Hur held up his hands. The children of Israel gained the victory (verse 13). God then instructed Moses to write the account of the battle on a scroll so that it would be remembered (verse 14). It was then that Moses built the altar he named “The Lord is my Banner.” That name proclaims God’s leadership and the protection of His people.
A banner is something that identifies and unifies a particular group of people. For example, a military flag or standard is sometimes called a banner. The Israelites’ saying, “The Lord is my Banner,” was a way of identifying themselves as the unified followers of the Lord God. A banner also functions as a rallying point for troops in a battle. The altar Moses built in Exodus 17 marked the place where God intervened on behalf of His people and promised to utterly defeat His enemies.
Psalm 20:5 says, “May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God.” In verses 6–8 we read, “Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.” God’s people continue to say, “The Lord is my Banner,” because it is in His power that the enemies are vanquished (see also Psalm 60:4–5). The Lord is our Banner in that He is the One under whom we unite. He is our Savior. We are rescued by Him and identified in Him.
Ultimately, our protection comes from God. In times of physical and spiritual attack and in threatening situations of all kinds, those who trust in the Lord find Him to be a strong Protector. “He shields all who take refuge in him” (Psalm 18:30). Here are some other passages that emphasize the protection of God:
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance” (Psalm 32:7).
“You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great. You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way” (Psalm 18:35–36).
“You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word” (Psalm 119:114).
“Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! . . . But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high” (Psalm 3:1, 3).
Under the Old Covenant, God promised physical protection to His people, the Israelites, as they kept the law (Deuteronomy 7:11–26). That divine protection extended to keeping them safe against the nations that would come against them as they entered the Promised Land: “I will send My terror ahead of you, and throw into confusion all the people among whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you” (Exodus 23:27, NASB). Here we see God protecting those whose actions accorded with His foreordained plans and purpose.
Psalm 121 is a wonderfully encouraging song for those who trust fully in God. The psalmist first identifies that his help comes from the Lord of all the earth (Psalm 121:1–2). He then instructs us on the attentiveness of the Lord toward His children—the One who never slumbers is on duty night and day (Psalm 121:3–6). Finally, the psalmist assures us that the God who watches us will keep us from harm and that He oversees all our activities now and forever (Psalm 121:7–8).
Individuals who knew the protection of God include David (Psalm 18:3; 54:7; 138:7); Noah (Genesis 7); Daniel (Daniel 6); and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3). God’s protection was even evident in Job’s life. Yes, Job suffered many trials as a result of the attacks of Satan, but God established boundaries that Satan could not cross. Satan was limited to doing only what God allowed, and nothing more (Job 1—3). Through all the misery and afflictions Job endured, God was protecting him from greater harm. God also protected Job’s faith, allowing Job to be tested only so far before He stepped in and spoke to Job (Job 38—42). Job could not see God working behind the scenes, but he came to understand that God’s protection is sure and faithful. God promises His people, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (see Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:5; 1 Chronicles 28:20; Hebrews 13:5).
In Scripture, God used several means of protecting His people, including angels (Psalm 91:11–12), fire (2 Kings 1:9–10), floods (Judges 5:21), escape routes (Acts 9:24–25), royal decrees (Ezra 6:11–12), pagan armies (Acts 23:23–24), and insomnia (Esther 6). God’s power and creativity are unlimited.
God’s promise of protection does not guarantee that we will never know pain or loss. Job’s story shows us that, although God is able to deliver us out of every physical calamity or trouble, it may not be His will to do so. Sometimes He uses trials to purify us. At these times, we should “count it pure joy” because, by allowing trials, God tests our faith to develop a deeper faith so that we persevere and grow to maturity and Christlikeness (James 1:2–3). Protecting us from trials is not always beneficial to us.
Also, God does not always shield us from the results of our own sins or the negative effects of the sins of others. Our world is fallen, and we endure its hardships. Many in Jesus Christ endure persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). Jesus assured His disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). In every situation, however, God remains in control, and our sufferings have a limit. God will not allow us to be tested beyond our ability to bear it (1 Corinthians 10:13). “The waves may toss and roar,” God says, “but they can never pass the boundaries I set” (Jeremiah 5:22, NLT).
The promise of physical protection is not ours under the New Covenant; rather, our focus is on God’s spiritual protection against the enemies of our soul. For our spiritual protection, God has given us spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10–18) and His own peace to guard our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7). The essence of God’s protection is the eternal indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:21–22). It is this protection that Paul had in mind when he wrote, “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18). The Romans could do their worst, but Paul had confidence that “to be absent from the body [is] to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
The believer is sealed for the day of final glorification (Ephesians 1:13–14). No matter what happens in this world, heaven is our home. We are spiritually safe. “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:8). We draw near to God and trust His protection. We invite His work in us, knowing that He will accomplish His good purpose in our lives (Romans 8:28–39).
Matthew 5:48 is part of the challenging Sermon on the Mount: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” This sounds like an impossible standard Jesus is placing before us. How can we be as perfect as God? What did Jesus mean?
Some people might view the command to be perfect as a proof text for sinless perfection. However, several passages of Scripture acknowledge the ongoing struggle with sin in a Christian’s life (Galatians 5:17; Romans 7:15–20; 1 John 1:8–10; Philippians 3:12). Jesus’ words cannot be used to defend the doctrine of sinless perfection, as Scripture consistently conveys a different message. We will never be perfect, in the sense of “sinless,” in this life.
Let us consider the overall context before delving into what it means to “be perfect.” Jesus begins His sermon by pronouncing blessings on unlikely recipients (Matthew 5:3–12). He then declares that His followers are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, emphasizing the importance of good deeds (verses 13–16). Next, He turns His attention to the law, making it clear that His standard surpasses mere observance of the law’s letter (verses 17–47). Our thoughts and motives matter, too. That’s why Jesus equates lust with adultery and hatred with murder. He also emphasizes love for enemies, non-resistance, the permanence of marriage, and the avoidance of oath-taking.
In Matthew 5:48 Jesus continues setting the standard higher than we are wont to set it. The literal interpretation is likely what Jesus intended. We are called to be absolutely perfect, matching the perfection of our heavenly Father. Every aspect of our being should align with God’s ways, including our deepest thoughts. The Greek word used, teleios, conveys a sense of maturity, completeness, or attaining a goal. In this context, the goal is to meet God’s standard, not simply settle for human morality. A follower of Christ cannot take an attitude of “I’m good enough.”
This realization should frustrate any honest person, for who can achieve moral perfection? Who hasn’t experienced coveting, lust, or hatred? The idea that we can be perfect like God seems hyperbolic. Moreover, the Bible clearly states that we are not perfect. We are all sinners and have fallen short of God’s standard (Romans 3:9–20; 1 John 1:8; Ecclesiastes 7:20; Psalm 14:2–3). How, then, do we reconcile the command to be perfect like God with the truth that we’re not?
The answer lies in the gospel. Jesus is the only One who has lived a perfect life, and it is through Him that we meet God’s standard. Rather than earning righteousness, we are declared righteous because of Christ. As Paul states,
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God freely and graciously declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. (Romans 3:22-24, NLT)
Second Corinthians 5:21 further demonstrates the substitutionary atonement of Jesus: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Because we are made perfect through Christ, we should live accordingly. Our lives should exhibit God’s righteousness and holiness due to our identity as His people. Christ’s standard becomes a way of life as we obey His teachings. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we find the strength to love our enemies, uphold our relationships, overcome lust and hatred, and follow the other commands in Scripture.
In obeying the command to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect, we cannot lean on our own righteousness, which falls far short. We must rely on Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit within us. “‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty” (Zechariah 4:6).

Tea Time Manna
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
—Proverbs 27:1
Don’t you have your hands full today? I know I sure do!
Don’t you find yourself distracted from the urgent and important things of today when you worry about the problems of tomorrow? I know most people do!
Don’t you occasionally find yourself missing an opportunity today while fantasizing about all the possibilities far down the road? Many people do!
Isn’t it a waste of time to be anxious about those things over which you have no influence? Why worry so much about tomorrow, next week, and some time in the future? Let’s walk with God today and trust in his faithfulness for us tomorrow. As our Lord Jesus commanded us:
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)
Prayer
Holy God, please give me the strength to seize the moment and live today in a way that pleases you and blesses others. Please help my heart feel the urgency of today and act with boldness, kindness, and redeeming love instead of worrying so much about what might happen tomorrow or next week. Help me, O God, to live with the immediacy of the moment I see in your son’s ministry when he walked the earth. It’s in his name, I pray. Amen and Amen

If you can only Imagen!

Imagination = One of the Talents, God gifted His Children. Christianity is made up of History and Imagination, although we received a Good Picture of Bible Prophecy, Eternity and Our Future Living Arrangement’s in the bible. God gave us Imagination.
Imagination is indeed one of the most powerful, God-given gifts we possess,
Acting as a spiritual and mental blueprint where we conceive ideas before they manifest in reality. Because we are made in the image of a Creator, our capacity to envision things that do not yet exist is a direct reflection of His divine nature.
To explore and build this beautiful talent, you can focus on a mix of spiritual alignment and practical mental exercises:
1. Practice “Godly Conception” through Scripture
- Visualize the Promises: When you read scriptural promises of peace, healing, or provision, don’t just read the words—picture them. Build a mental image of yourself walking in victory, health, and joy rather than focusing on fear or sickness.
- Immersive Reading (Ignatian Contemplation): Step directly into biblical stories. When reading a passage, use your senses to imagine the scene: feel the dust of the road, hear the murmur of the crowd, and listen to the tone of Jesus’ voice. This transforms abstract concepts into vivid realities.
2. Regularly Ask “What If?” Questions
- Break Free from the Familiar: Curiosity is the fuel of imagination. Train your brain to look past current limitations by asking open-ended questions like, “What if God wants to do something entirely new here?” or “How can I solve this problem differently?”
- Dream with God: Spend time daydreaming about your future under His guidance. Envisioning the possibilities He has for your life builds a healthy sense of anticipation and expectation.
3. Guard Your Mental Intake
- Replace the Lies: It is incredibly easy to fill our minds with worst-case scenarios, anxiety, and media-driven worries. Actively fast from negative mental loops. Deliberately redirect your thoughts to things that are true, noble, and beautiful to keep your imaginative space clean and inspired.
- Consume Rich Content: Read deep books, study nature, listen to complex music, and look at beautiful art. High-quality creative inputs naturally expand your mind’s vocabulary and internal library.
4. Create Without the Fear of Failure
- Embrace a Spirit of Play: Give yourself permission to experiment without worrying if the end product is perfect. Write a short story, paint, try a new recipe, or rearrange your room just for the joy of creating.
- Record Your Ideas: Treat your imagination like a muscle that grows when acknowledged. Keep a journal or a digital notepad handy to write down random thoughts, sudden inspirations, or dreams. When you value your insights enough to record them, your mind will naturally generate more.
To use your imagination to deepen your spiritual journey, you can transition from thinking about God to actively experiencing His presence. In the Christian tradition, this intentional use of the Spiritual Guidance is often called sanctified imagination—allowing the Holy Spirit to guide your internal sight.
Here is a structured guide to building your imagination as a spiritual discipline:
1. Engage in Meditative Prayer
- Picture the Presence: When you pray, do not just speak into an empty room. Use your imagination to visualize Jesus sitting across from you, or picture yourself resting under the shadow of the Almighty’s wings (Psalm 91).
- The “Safe Place” Exercise: Imagine a peaceful landscape—a quiet beach, a mountain peak, or a still garden. In your mind, invite Jesus to walk into that space with you. Sit quietly with Him there and notice what He does or says.
2. Practice Sacred Daydreaming
- Visualize Your Kingdom Impact: Instead of using your imagination to worry about the future, use it to partner with God’s vision. Spend 10 minutes imagining how you can be a vessel of love in your community.
- See People Through Grace: When dealing with a difficult person, use your imagination to picture them the way God sees them—healed, whole, and deeply loved. This shifts your heart from frustration to empathy.
3. Step into Biblical Narratives
- Become a Character: Read a Gospel story and cast yourself as someone in the crowd. If you are reading about the healing of the blind man, imagine the sudden rush of color and light returning to your eyes.
- Engage All Five Senses: When reading Scripture, mentally map out the temperature of the air, the smell of the sea, the sound of the wind, and the expressions on the faces of the disciples. This moves truth from an abstract concept in your head to a lived reality in your heart.
4. Create a “Memorial” Journal
- Sketch or Write Your Insights: When God gives you a fresh insight, a dream, or a sudden moment of peace, document it creatively. You don’t have to be an artist; even simple symbols, poems, or vivid descriptions act as physical markers of your spiritual growth.

The Global Pressure Cooker: War, Energy, Food And Economic Crisis

The months ahead are shaping up to be a time of war, economic problems, food shortages and global chaos. There is no end in sight for the war in the Middle East or the war with Russia.
Meanwhile, global energy supplies and global food supplies both continue to get even tighter. We desperately need some sort of a diplomatic miracle, but talks with the Iranians have totally broken down and tensions between the Russians and our allies in Europe are higher than ever.
Our deteriorating economy is the number one political issue in the U.S. during this election season, but the economic pain that we have experienced so far will be absolutely dwarfed by what is ahead.
On Thursday, it was being reported that the U.S. has decided to deploy a third aircraft carrier and a second Marine division to the Middle East…
The Trump administration has decided to deploy a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East, along with a second Marine division, a US official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt and an additional division of US Marines will deploy to US Central Command’s area of operations.
The move means that, until the US midterm elections, US President Donald Trump will have significantly greater military capabilities and a wider range of options for potential action against Iran.
Many were hoping that an end to the war was near.
These moves are an indication that a major escalation could be coming.
The Iranians have not backed down and they are not going to back down.
On Tuesday, they attacked three more commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz…
Three vessels reported being struck on Tuesday, September 29, in the area around the Strait of Hormuz as Iran appears to be lashing out to demonstrate that it is still threatening vessels. While it brings the total number of vessels struck to four so far this week, observers point to increasing oil flows and vessel traffic in the region.
UK Maritime Trade Operations reported the incidents, although few details were provided. It said that the information had come from verified sources but was delayed in being transmitted. It was unclear when the strikes took place. It identified all three incidents as involving tankers without details on the extent of the damage, while an unconfirmed report said one of the vessels was an LNG carrier.
Two of the vessels were identified in the tracking by the International Maritime Organization, with both being crude oil tankers flying the Liberian flag and sustaining damage. One VLCC, the Mersin Prosperity (299,319 dwt), is operated by ADNOC. The other tanker appeared to be a smaller vessel, possibly involved in the shuttle operations that have arisen to get oil from the Gulf states to tankers waiting south of the Strait in the Arabian Sea. This tanker was identified as Sinbad (115,949 dwt), and it was last reported at Fujairah. Both tankers appeared to be making the transit dark.
We have been able to get some oil through the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks.
But not nearly enough.
It would be wonderful if the Iranians were willing to make a reasonable deal, but they just aren’t budging.
In fact, talks with the Iranians went so poorly when Iranian officials came to New York that Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered them to leave early…
After little progress was made in weekend meetings between Iranian and Qatari mediators, Rubio lost patience and told the Iranians on Monday that Araghchi and his delegation had to leave New York immediately, according to the two officials, who were familiar with the decision and spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an internal administration process.
Rubio, according to one official, determined that the Iranians had “overstayed their welcome” and that since the high-level meetings at the U.N. were over, they should leave.
Ararghchi and his team departed New York very early Tuesday.
What this means is that the global energy crisis is going to continue to get worse.
Earlier today, we learned that the Chinese “have suspended exports of oil products to regions beyond Hong Kong and Macau until further notice”…
Chinese refiners have suspended exports of oil products to regions beyond Hong Kong and Macau until further notice from Beijing, four people briefed on the matter said on Thursday.
As China looks to safeguard domestic supplies, state oil major PetroChina cancelled on Wednesday a handful of its gasoline and jet fuel shipments that were planned for October, three of the sources said.
This pushed the price of Brent crude above 101 dollars a barrel and the price of U.S. crude above 92 dollars a barrel.
Meanwhile, Trump administration officials have announced that the U.S. will be releasing more oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and they are strongly pressuring our allies in Europe to follow suit…
The Trump administration has told Germany and France to draw down emergency diesel inventories to help ease soaring global fuel prices or face a potential US diesel export ban, according to three people close to the discussions.
The warning marks an escalation in pressure on Europe as US President Donald Trump considers a potential ban to help bring down US fuel prices ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Even though fuel prices in Europe have risen to absolutely insane levels, European leaders have been hesitant to authorize the release of more strategic reserves.
One anonymous U.S. official told Reuters that it is “in Europe’s best interest to work with the United States”…
The International Energy Agency, the West’s energy watchdog, has not yet asked Germany to release stocks, Germany’s economy ministry said. It was not clear when the IEA might meet next.
The US administration has been particularly frustrated with France and Germany, which US officials believe have not fully followed through on earlier commitments to release emergency oil and petroleum product stocks, Reuters has reported previously.
“It is in Europe’s best interest to work with the United States as we pursue multiple pathways to boost the supply of refined products and lower costs for consumers,” one of the sources, a US official, told Reuters.
As global supplies of fuel get extremely tight, we are seeing things happen that are absolutely unprecedented.
This week, the crack spread for diesel was hovering in a range of $108 to $122 per barrel.
The soaring cost of diesel is hitting farmers all over the planet extremely hard, and it is one of the factors that is driving up global food prices.
Zero Hedge is reporting that the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index increased by a whopping 13 percent during the third quarter of this year…
The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index (BCOMAGSP) posted its largest quarterly gain since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, as Black Sea disruptions, a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and mounting El Niño risks have formed what could be considered a perfect storm poised to drive food prices higher.
BCOMAGSP, which tracks 10 major crops including corn, soybeans, wheat, coffee, sugar, cotton, cocoa, and others, jumped 13% in the third quarter.
When food prices rise in the United States, that is painful, but most of us still have enough food to eat.
In nations where poverty is widespread, higher food prices can mean the difference between eating and not eating for millions of people.
Ominously, the foreign minister of India is now warning that a “major food crisis” is coming in the months ahead…
India’s foreign minister S Jaishankar has warned that the world faces a “major food crisis” in the coming months, as wars in Ukraine and the Middle East compound the effects of a super El Nino.
Speaking at an event organised by the Asia Society in New York, Mr Jaishankar said the two conflicts had “a devastating impact” on the economies of the Global South, and that energy, food, fertiliser and finance were all under strain at once.
“If you have energy as a big crunch and then food and fertilisers on top of it, and finance, because every time there’s a conflict, money moves towards safe harbours and away from the Global South, the net result of it has been really very, very stressful,” he said.
We are experiencing a global fertilizer crisis, soaring diesel prices, extreme droughts in Central America and other key agricultural regions, the most powerful Super El Niño ever recorded and World War III all at the same time.
The food shortages that are coming will shock everyone.
The wealthy nations will hoard whatever food happens to be available just like they are starting to hoard fuel right now.
But many impoverished nations will not have that option.
The number of acutely hungry people in the world was already at an all-time high coming into 2026, and now global hunger is going to go to an entirely new level.
What we are facing is extremely serious, and there are no easy solutions on the horizon.
